I’m a small business owner. The base m1 Mac mini with 8gb ram wasn’t cutting it for me for general use as I keep about 20 apps open. Traded it in for the base Mac Studio and have been very pleased. It is a perfect machine in terms of ram and ports.

Great honest review and to the point. My wife is a graphic designer, and after her 2012 decided to take a well-deserved rest, I surprised her with an M1 Mac Mini 16Gb /1Tb, and she was a happy camper. Then she began complaining that 16 Gb was not enough, that she ran out of ram from time to time; well, an unhappy wife makes the husband very miserable. After a few months, she got her upgraded M1 Max Mac Studio, 32-core GPU, 64 Gb Ram, and 2 Tb SSD (I guess that my new F150 is going to wait for another year 😂😂). Now there are no more complaints, and she is happy again. I ended up inheriting her Mac Mini, which is overkill for me. I retired on December 31, 2017, and after six months decided to go back to college to finish my degree and start my master's degree. Most of the use I get from the Mac Mini is from opening the browser for research and having my word processor open alongside (I have an ultra-wide monitor that is excellent for this purpose ). My household is an example of how two people use their PCs. Her, the need for more power, me for the simplicity. I can even go further; I plan to build a small studio shack near my house for peacetime, much needed for those long research projects for my masters, and I might get a refurbished iMac from the Apple outlet 8Gb ram and 256 Gb SSD will be enough. Stay safe; I sub to your channel.

With my workflow I keep Illustraor, Photoshop, Resolve, and InDesign open all the time as I bounce between projects and my M1 mini used to slow and stutter, forcing me to close programs out. The Studio Ultra has no such issues and blows through everything I throw at it.
If you use the computer for work, the little bits of time you save on the render times or switching between programs, etc. add up quickly.

I purchased the base Mac mini w/8GB of RAM but still use my intel 27” iMac, as I don’t have space on my desk to setup both. I basically do heavy spreadsheet work and the Mac mini is sufficient; but to future-proof it, think I should have gotten at least 16GB RAM. Maybe l’ll wait for the M2 Mac mini and do a trade-in? Also thinking of getting the Apple display… way down the line after I’ve saved enough… Your review helped me confirm staying with the Mac mini… unless a 27+” iMac comes around?…

This is an excellent update review. Prior to three months ago, my main desktop was a 2010, mac mini (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive) paired with an Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display. I tried to order the base model Mac Studio with a few upgrades and the Apple order site said these models were on a 5-month back-order. Also, at the same time learned that the new Studio Display was not quite ready for prime time. In addition, in person Apple staff that, I asked had no idea how to connect my 27-inch Cinema display to a Mac Studio because it used Apple's mini display port. So, I picked-up a used 2014, trash can size 8-core D-700 Mac Pro with 64 GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD storage and everything just works great together (smile...smile).

@@DerekDavis213 Playing devil's advocate as someone who owns a custom built PC, but is still planning on buying the Mac Studio for music production:
      - Most people buying Macs aren't buying them to run windows. Want windows 10? Buy a PC.
      - Who cares? Again, people don't buy Macs to play games. Buy a PS5 or build a gaming PC if you want to play games.
      - This is flat out not true. For creative tasks (music production, photo and video editing, 3D rendering) and even non-creative ones like software dev, there are tons of native applications already.
      - Fair point. The non user serviceable aspect of most Apple products is a shame. For most people, this is not a deterrent since they aren't the type to troubleshoot issues and do DIY repairs anyway. They would just take it to the manufacturer to get it fixed anyway.
      - The fans can be accessed and cleaned, but it's a royal pain in the ass. I've been repairing electronics for years and it would still be a huge pain.
      - Nonsense; windows PCs are most certainly not "better in every way." My $2500 system with an i9-10900k is slower (for CPU tasks) than the Mac studio. The performance of M1 smacks the shit out of anything Intel makes, and when you factor in power efficiency (performance per watt) it's game over. These machines use a fraction of the power of a huge desktop gaming rig while being faster for all non-gaming applications. Personal side note: audio on windows is an absolute dumpster fire and a non-issue on MacOS. Looking forward to producing/mixing without having to deal with windows bullshit.
      Keep an open mind!

@@nate_creates Boot Camp has been a *valuable* *and* *cherished* part of the Mac for many years. Now that Apple has switched to a cell-phone processor (M1), all that wonderful Windows software is pretty much GONE.
Also, many peripherals and accessories that work perfectly on Windows and Intel-based Macs are NOT working properly on the M1.
Many of the M1 native applications (from Adobe for example) are NOT feature-complete. The Windows version has more features, and is much more stable and mature. Also, many plug-ins for Photoshop or Premiere will not work with the native M1 software.
The fans CANNOT be accessed and cleaned, for 99.9% of Mac customers. Lets be real. I've watched videos of the Mac Studio being taken-apart, and it's major surgery even for electronic repair guys like you.
You obviously overpaid for your $2500 i9-10900k system, and besides that is *OLD* technology. I'm talking about Mac Studio competitors today:
      Intel 12700K
      Intel 12900K
      Ryzen 5950x, 16 cores and 32 threads.
      Ryzen 5950x costs only $499.
You say the performance of the Mac Studio mops the floor with Windows running a 12900K and NVidia 3090? Doing what? Final Cut? Or that ridiculous Geekbench benchmark that *nobody* *takes* *seriously* ?
You know that video games are extremely popular in 2022, and even hard-core video editors or programmers or musicians like to play games after the work day is over.
Mac Studio (with a cell phone processor) is terrible for gaming! How many top AAA games on Windows will run similarly well on the Mac Studio, with cell phone processor and weak gpu? VERY FEW!

@@lolfirepoisonftl Looking at my current storage . . . . I have about 400 customers in my system. Each one has at least one InDesign file (some have as many as a dozen or so) with their own graphic source files (PSD and AI stuff). And another 200 folders full of uploaded print projects which I try to remember to zip up for storage every few months on an external drive. And I'm also storing my music and movie archive on the Studio while I move archived stuff around between external drives.
So a grand total of approximately 570 GB worth of (mostly) daily work files. I knew 512gb would be cutting it close for my workflow. Yes, I don't need the music and movie archive inside the box and I certainly have plenty of older files that could go to an external but the upfront price of the full TB internal is pretty much the same price as an NVMe + Thunderbolt enclosure with the same storage.
I'm coming from a Trashcan MacPro so I took out the 1TB NVMe from there and put it into an Thunderbolt enclosure and it is equally (from a human perspective anyway) just as fast as the internal storage.
Wrapping up my thoughts on internal vs. external, I would say you will be pretty much equal from a performance level, equal in price either way too. So the choice would come down to how long are you able to wait?
Mine took just under 8 weeks from ordering (via B&H Photo) to landing on my doorstep. I had even called B&H to cancel my order so I could pick one up in-store (probably at Best Buy or online from Costco) when they told me it had literally came in that hour and was being forwarded to my address. Put the other way around, if primarily on a single core is there any downside or WORSE performance from an M1 Max (your comment about efficiencies of 2 cores vs 4 has me wondering about this)??

    • @GarrettCrespo
      @GarrettCrespo  2 года назад +1

It really depends. For actual “single core” tasks, no. This is because the cores are literally the same on both chips. The big difference is in the number of cores. If the everyday tasks you’re referring to benefit from multi core chips, then possibly because the Mac mini has double the efficiency cores of the Mac Studio.

I bought one for "day-to-day" use because I wanted the 27" monitor, and I didn't want to wait several months to see whether Apple would offer an M1 iMac with a 27" screen. And I wanted more storage than you can get on a Mac Mini. Yes, it's more power than I need, but so what? It'll be great for many years, and it feels very fast when I use it. With the Studio Display, I have a wonderful system. I kept my last Mac for over seven years. I presume I'll use the Mac Studio that long too. Spreading the "extra cost" -- not sure how to define that here -- of this more powerful computer over a few years, the annual cost seems trivial. And power is good. It's like driving a high-performance car or motorcycle. It does what you want very fast. The issue with the storage wouldn't be a matter of capacity, but longevity. The 1TB has twice the endurance of the 512GB. If you're doing write intensive work with large files regularly you could be looking at drive failure occurring earlier than ideal, which is worse for proprietary (or soldered) storage. I basically consider the base model MBA a scam if you're after the performance for intensive work, for lower cost. The combo of 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, just means more paging to an SSD with even worse endurance. It's literally designed for you to have to replace it sooner. I see failed 256GB and lower drives all the time in PCs and Macs. 512GB are less common, but the last one I had to replace for someone was a 4 year old Samsung. Apple is very likely using TLC nand. I personally have a nearly 10 year old MLC SATA 512GB with a bunch of SMART errors. It's spent half that time as a system drive, the rest as an external bootable diagnostic drive. I haven't hammered it as much as a content creator is likely to have.

I think the surprising performance of M1 made people forget that the MacBook Air isn’t intended to be a high-powered productivity laptop. If you are a professional, doing professional work, and your computer is a key part of that-there is another device for you. The MBA is for business analysts and executive team types who spend most of their time doing email and maybe a spreadsheet or two. Oh, and the general populace, whose computing needs rarely exceed that which could be provided by a $20 Raspberry Pi.

Why the heck does nobody talk about future proofing. Offsetting obsolescence.
“ you probably don’t need the power of the Mac Studio if you’re just doing day-to-day chores”
What about seven freaking years from now?
Won’t today’s max studio handle day to day chores adequately, where the M1 Mac mini will choke on the same tasks?
It’s so weird that people talk about today’s needs, when everything changes dramatically every 18 months.

    • @GarrettCrespo
      @GarrettCrespo  2 года назад +4

The reason that I recommend the M1 Mac mini for day to day is because it WILL handle day to day now and well into the future. Mine handled fairly intense tasks that most people will never ask of it! However, the Mac Studio will handle intense work now and well into the future. Both are great for now and the future, but the Mac minis are more about day to day task for a long time and the Mac studio is more about heavy workloads now and into the future.

Something being more powerful now doesn't mean it will last longer. For example, lets say m3 has better hardware raytracing support and games start taking advantage of that more and well now you're superpowered machine is still out of date.
Now, to be fair, I think phones have suffered more from this, since they were for a good while barely able to keep up with the internet sometimes. But as long as we are talking about more powerful devices, I think you hit a point of diminishing returns real fast when it comes to future proofing, but it all depends on what you do.

My hackintosh build is probably 5-7 years old and my mac pro before that was around the same. The jump between them was less than you’d think for my work, though there was an improvement. The biggest benefits seem to be graphics cards, which gained a lot of you take advantage of Ray Tracing etc. Music software is still a bit all over the place when it comes to multi threading, so I suspect a lot of my bottleneck is software just as much as it is hardware sometimes. Multithreading performance is much better than what it was 12 years ago, even on an old computer. In the Windows PC world, there have been huge gains: 12th-generation Intel Alder Lake processors, and Ryzen 5000-series processors. Also, SSD drives that now run at up to 7500 megabytes/second. Which is important when video editing large 4k or 6k files.
And Apple turned their back on all that, and went with a processor from a cell phone (M1). M1 also cannot run Boot Camp with 100% Windows software compatibility. That is a HUGE loss for Mac customers.

Hi there. Thanks for the great review. Very useful. I'm going to be buying this same model with spec soon. I do a lot of video editing. Mostly on HD 1080p and on occasion 4K. I'm currently researching 27 inch monitors which are colour accurate. I only have the space and budget for only 1. I was originally looking at 4K so I can see full res playback in final exports but I'm a bit concerned about Apple OS scaling for the software windows? I would be using scaling display option as the text size for day to day will be a struggle I think. Would it be better to get a QHD 1440p monitor instead and then playback will "almost" as good but day to day use will be more easier on the eye? What monitor option did you go for? I'm currently looking at the LG 27up850-w, Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-20 and the Dell UltraSharp U2723QE. These are all 4K but would look for the QHD version instead should I go down that route instead. I would be very grateful for any of your experienced advice. Best

I went with 1440p monitors and prioritized color accuracy. The ones I have aren’t made anymore, but Dell and LG’s color accuracy claims are pretty spot on when it comes to their higher end monitors. Also, window scaling hasn’t been much of an issue for me, but I know some programs can be weird about that in macOS. Either way, the Dell and LG options you listed are solid. I don’t have enough experience with Lenovo to really comment on them though.

yep, honest review. Let me be honest too! The 24 core GPU was deemed "binned" because the batch was not passed for the basic 32 core GPU that it was designed to be, hence it should have not been put into production. However, instead of selling the faulty GpU at 1, 799.00 Apple is trying to get their investment back and sold and marketed it at $1,999 where the 32 core GPU base unit should have been! So we are effectively paying 400 bucks more for the 32 core base unit which is not an 'upgraded' but standard cpu! That's marketing! What I'm really pissed about is that now very few users consider testing the 32 core GPU as the base model, instead preferring to pay less for the Below-the -baseline one with the 24 core GpU! It's all in the name! that's business. I bought the 32 core GPU model and it's much faster than the 24 core! Apple made suckers of all of us! same with the 48 core ULTRA compared to the 64 core GPU, ETC! Is it double the output OF THE 32 CORE? Not at all, coming only close to 42% better. chips with manufacturing faults are not supposed to be sold as a cheaper version, but actually destroyed, but not in this case! every version has a BIN, may it be 20 core, 24 core 28 core or 32 core. it's a collection of passes or fails separated into different bins!

I see what you’re saying, but this is actually a practice that’s existed in the industry for decades. Intel does the exact same thing for their main Core chips. One wafer is made and the i9, i7, i5, and i3 chips are all cut from it based on the quality of the silicon yield. I have no problem with Apple doing the same considering it allows them to offer a varied price range.

This isn’t the first comment to say that and it won’t be the last. It is what it is.

Wow. Out come the personal attacks. What this has to do with the subjects under discussion is a mystery. If you don’t like personal choices of a reviewer, don’t watch the channel. If you feel that way, why are you here and making negative comments? Does it fulfill some need to feel superior?

I pooped into this vid and had forgotten I had commented a few months previously. In fact, this was the last Mac Studio vid I had watched after buying mine. I THEN realized, after a week or three of fine tuning my Studio for myself (under-shelf mounting, finding the right combination of external components, etc.), that I rarely even THINK about my computer. It JUST WORKS, and it does that with zero hardware drama. Zero noise (my creaky old external HD collection is another story), and zero worries. I named it Maximo. Lol.
I mounted it with the rear facing me (behind my twin monitors) so that I could access the ports when needed (much less of an issue once I sorted everything out) and there is no way to prettify my wiring nest, so it stays hidden. This is for work, not making zen YT videos. I have no regrets, I would not need or want anything upgraded on the specs I chose, nor was any choices deemed an overkill. It’s perfect for me.
Software-wise, it has some quirks with Adobe suite that I hoped would self correct by now but nothing worth getting my underoos in a knot. And even that may just be a monitor setting.
It was nice rewatching this vid with a few additional months of experience on this machine.
