It’s great to see a David Milch pre-Deadwood. He is an American TV treasure. His most autobiographical work is “Luck,” with Dustin Hoffman. So many of the characters he drew from his own experiences in that one.
I think he was referring to the wars that were still then ongoing in “the former Yugoslavia” which is how the region was referred to at the time. He was just short handing and called it Yugoslavia.
He was. This was the apex of the craziness/lunacy on set when actors would come to the set not having a clue what they were shooting because Milch hadn't yet written it. As much as Smits loved Milch, personally, he left because of the chaotic nature of the filming.
Never heard of David Milch until now.
Tom’s poem at the end is quintessential TS.
Thanks for posting.
Watch NYPD Blue and Deadwood if you get a chance. Brilliant, brilliant writing and incredibly brilliant man.

To think that Deadwood was still ahead of him at the time this interview aired. One of the greatest tv shows of all time.

Sad to learn that he's had Alzheimers for about 10 years, with the last 5 years in an assisted-living place. (according to wikipedia)
Thank you for this
Your welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Any late show host today can match up the voice and demeanor at all
Milch was still using heroin/booze at this time in his life if he thought Yugoslavia still existed in 1999 oof.
