My wife drives through Shankhill on business trips every month. She heard this song and still drives through it...but much quicker! Sarah's cover is by far the best version of this song.
Mate it's a housing estate 😂 if she heard the song 30 years ago it might have been an excuse to go through quicker but being honest driving through Bristol town centre is worse than driving through Belfast these days
Sarah Jarosz is an American treasure who is certain to be around for the next 50-60 years! One of the very best of America's young musical talents. She transcends Country, Bluegrass, Americana, Alt-Country, and Jazz with equal aplomb.
A beautiful and chilling version of this song, amazing how Sarah's music sounds so full yet is so simple, awesome instrumental and vocal techniques makes all of her music flow so smoothly.
'Shankill Butchers' creeps me out, but you sure sing it sweetly...Stayed around for Broussard's Lament, and was very pleased. Thanks for sharing...Hoping to see you soon !
Solid string musician, very expressive, so not outstanding voice, young, good looking, playing world music style. This music will never be mainstream, but valued by many all around the globe.
The Shankill Butchers were an Ulster loyalist gang-many of whom were members of the Ulster Volunteer Force -that was active between 1975 and 1982 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was based in the Shankill area and was responsible for the deaths of at least 23 people, most of whom were killed in sectarian attacks.
The gang was notorious for kidnapping, torturing and murdering random or suspected Catholic civilians; each was beaten ferociously and had their throat hacked with a butcher's knife. Some were also tortured and attacked with a hatchet. The gang also killed six Ulster Protestants over personal disputes, and two other Protestants mistaken for Catholics.
Great ensemble, killer medley! I inspected buildings after Katrina at ground zero, in MS. It was not pretty! From the shore to the railroad tracks, a half mile inland - nothing remained! It was not a pretty sight. Bush did a careless, amateur's job - he may as well have been reading 'row, row, row your goat' to school kids. But in reality, it was more than the Feds could handle. Few countries do a good job with these disasters. I can't believe Sarah wrote this at a young age! (not sure when. She was 14 when the storm hit)
The Shankill Butchers was an Ulster loyalist gang-many of whom were members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF)-that was active between 1975 and 1982 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was based in the Shankill area and was responsible for the deaths of at least 23 people, most of whom were killed in sectarian attacks. The gang was notorious for kidnapping and murdering random civilians from the Catholic community; each was beaten ferociously and had their throat hacked with a butcher's knife. Some were also tortured and attacked with a hatchet. The gang also killed six Protestants over personal disputes, and two other Protestants mistaken for Catholics.
SF/IRA also supported the Ennisikillen bombing and Irish Republicans burst into Darkley Gospel Hall and shot dead Protestant church go-ers in cold AK-47/IRA blood
Ted O'Neill Not really. All you have seen me doing is letting it be known to a wider audience that Roman Catholic Republican death squads could be Every bit as Sectarian as fuck, as their Loyalist Protestant counterparts too. But you don't like that fact as it dilutes your ideological, prejudicial IRA bubble
JAc Mac Stop trying to justify your comment by misrepresenting my view, and don't try and assume you have any idea where my opinion is coming from. No "Cause" is worth the loss of one life, never mind thousands! It is people likw you who have stirred, and continue to stir, the bitter cauldron of hate on both sides. I think the "Wider audience" as you put it, are not stupid, and will make their own mind up on , which one of us is part of the problem and which one is part of the solution!
teddyoneills How was I misrepresenting? All I did was was even up the death scores which is what the Roman Catholic IRA did too. And it wasn't people like me, it was one of your IRA comanchies that started stirring the pot, so I was merely helping the spoon blend more equally. And talk of final solutions is very Nazis like, but then again let us not forget the IRA did have a high priority alliance with the Nazis during World War 2
The combination of the two songs is out-of-this-world-cool. First the trio scares the crap out of the audience with the Decembrist's haunting warning about the Shankill Butchers; ever heard the original? It sounds like the guy doesn't understand his own song and has no business singing it, (sorry, Sarah owns it now). With two parts warning, one part threat, the song is deliciously frightening. The song instructs as it warns ; 'Everybody moan, everybody shake...' Sarah herself moaning, wailing and giving a creepy but sexy little shake. When the song is done long threads of sound from the cello and violin tease as they tune up, building suspense for what will become Broussard's Lament. Sarah leads the trio into her own song without pretense. Tension builds quietly, slowly. We catch our collective breath. and it's a good thing we do because we need it for the rollicking ride at full gallop that is Broussard's Lament. The combination of the two songs, so original, so wildly different, both sound 200 years old, without beginning, without end. Broussard's Lament (which I read as the Bush administration's much deserved b*tchslap for their criminally negligent 'response' to Hurricane Katrina) tells it like it is. The song rages in righteous indignation. Short and sweet, satisfies as it rails, lists the days people waited for help to arrive. The whole world waiting with them. Sarah nails it- she gives voice to our outrage. Never did three instruments, four if you count Sarah's incredible voice and singing, five, if you count the cello being plucked like a giant banjo in addition to being played with the bow, make so much music. Wow. Wow. Wow.
It's a cool cover. Still prefer the original though, but I guess I only heard this version once, whereas I've listened to the decemberists version a thousand times.
Clearly showing its more my mother keeping her last name of her ex husband then some natural mental issues inherited I'm not an Irish Jew or Greek Egyptian Jew.... I was born in southern California
For marry Nathan and fornicating out of we'd lock with my father my mother was a polio survivor striken with what the medical institutiom came up with an acceptable form of life to continue as... And was unfortunate to have a sociopathic son desperate to get out of becoming a terrorist or murdering thug called patriot to inspire others... In hindsight I let god down I'm a bastard afterall only so many chances for redemption there
I'm being mentally manipulated and me not doing something or mear words drove the establishment to kill my polio survivor mother.... Just to have an excuse to throw money at me.... Madness

And Broussard is a person left stranded after the Katrina 'cane.

Hargreaves on fire. He always is
Great !
I'm not sure if Ms. Jaroz still plays with these cats...If not she should.
Her best was when she plays with "I'm With Her" - absolutely brilliant group.
2017 anyone?
In a few years, John Prine will be opening for Sarah Jarosz.
Um, not anymore, sad to say.
Wow!
Una secuencia de maravillas.

Wow, I've seen it all now, someone actually justifying the Shankill butchers, by comparing their actions to some equal idiots on the other side!!!

after hearing this, the original is completely unlistenable. his untrained flat voice is horrible actually
This is far better than the original.
First it was protect the farmer signers then it was protect the people guarding them then it was nobles so more devils don't get lose

Yankee trollap I'd love to tell her what she was singing about in no uncertain terms...,
Weirdest lullaby ever
i know about the people...dont think wee should be singing bout it.
Good arguments on both sides but Sarah is well aware of the tragic history of "The Troubles" and Martin Dillon's book impugning the scoundrels.
MuWAhahahahahah!
Can't fake it if you're "Really Good" and U B D best! Get to Florida! AR Kids is the smartest in the whole she bang!
A haunting reminder how evil humans can be!!!
The shankill butchers have no place in song. Its an insult to reference such an evil part of irish history in music.
Music portrays all parts of life both good and bad.
this sucks I never once felt spooked out. terrible
