- The Sonos headphones will be released within 9 months. Between now and then, the Bose QC Ultra will be your best bet and in this video, I go in-depth on what its competitors are, and what Sonos has to do to get the Sonos Headphones right at its first attempt.
I have coined the term Sonos Go as the headphones product name for Sonos. Not that they are using it. I don't know any better than you. Thnx for your vid. Very good as always. What headset can i use with my Arc and ERA 300’s for listening to music and watching a movie when the rest of the house sleeps? Does it even work with a Bluetooth headset like Sony or Bose?
I would also highly recommend the Technics A800 - I bought a set early last year and they have been great - also often available heavily discounted, at least where I live. Also blows the competition out of the water when it comes to battery life - I usually get well over 40 hours.
I almost bought either the sennheiser or B&W headphones just yesterday. Then I realized I should just wait for Sonos to release some.

What a fascinating video Peter. I agree with your comments at the end when you bought the Hed Unity into the discussion and started digging into the Bluetooth plus WiFi aspects. A lot of discussions I’ve seen about the potential Sonos headphones have focussed on what they need to do to compete with the best Sony/Bose/B&W/Apple over-ear Bluetooth headsets and how they need to price them accordingly. Maybe I’m a minority but personally that discussion disappoints me because I want a step up in sound quality and am willing to pay for it. I use earbuds when out of the home so for me sitting at my desk or on my balcony is pretty much my sole use for my over-ears and they could always be on WiFi so that is the bit that is more interesting to me. Also, again speaking purely personally and acknowledging that others might have very different needs, because I am always using them in my home a 6-8 hour battery life while being a bit tight isn’t catastrophically bad. Maybe if necessary to get the battery life it wants Sonos could allow the WiFi module to power down when Bluetooth paired to a phone (or whatever) to get to the 20-30 hour life that Bluetooth users have come to expect and people like me wanting lossless audio over WiFi can just recharge at the end of a long listening session.
Of course if Sonos does support lossless over WiFi then that’s pretty pointless if the transducers and amps aren’t of very high quality which again is why I get disappointed when I hear discussions about how Sonos needs to price at about the same price points as Sony XM5; I’d rather they spent more on a higher quality audio path. Sonos does have different quality levels for soundbars so maybe ultimately Sonos might release more than one model of headphone?
Finally, if Sonos does as you suggest and put its streaming client in its headphones so that they essentially look like a regular Sonos endpoint, which as you mention if they follow the existing model would also make them an Airplay endpoint, that also automatically makes them a Roon endpoint since in addition to its proprietary RAAT protocol Roon can also send audio to a client over either Sonos or Airplay (or Chromecast) protocols. I use that capability all the time for my Move and Sonos One devices so being able to do that with a pair of Sonos headphones would mean that they would integrate instantly into my existing Roon infrastructure simply by going into Roon settings where they will be auto-discovered and I could then enable them as a Roon endpoint.
So basically I’m quite excited about the possibilities but right now maybe a bit nervous that Sonos will not be quite as ambitious as I would like in terms of the quality of the amp and transducers in order to hit the competes-with-Sony/Bose/etc segment of the market.

Wifi yes bluetooth no for me as I'm a wired headphone lover wifi wired or not at all for me sonos need to compete with openbacks for sound stage aswell and seemles swapping between speakers and headphones. Dolby atmos for headphones and soundblaster g6 7.1 amp dac with openbacks simply cannot be beaten
B&W PX8 are way better
More expensive than any of those so px7 s2 would be fair

I hate to tell you this Peter, but nobody gives 2 craps about Android in the USA. If SONOS is smart, they will promote WiFi/AirPlay 2/BT 5.0
Good point. I myself am stuck in Apple eco-system. And I am like struggling with small little niggling settings in Android. Just not the best experience.
I understand that Bose and Sony make the most popular headphones, but that doesn’t mean they represent the best comparison for this market analysis. Given the design-forward nature of the Sonos brand identity, both B&W and B&O may make more comparable products.
After watching a bunch of reviews earlier in the last year, I ended up buying a set of Technics A800's - significantly cheaper than a lot of other premium noise cancelling headphones, and yet every review rated them up there with all the headphones Peter mentioned here - and no regrets, they have been fantastic so far. I'd still consider getting a Sonos set though, just for the ecosystem compatibility.

Bose headphones don't shield your ears from sudden loud dog barks or sirens. Can be shocking. Sony does filter and blocks it out.
Ultra’s have this option now
