  • Rimfire lever-action rifles seem a dime a dozen nowadays, yet the overall quality runs from sketchy budget options to classic premiums. Meanwhile, Browning’s BL-22 keeps clicking along - getting little fanfare - and continually puts out serious performance. What's kept this short-throw rifle in production for over 50 years?
Let’s get down to business with this Japanese-built lever-action rimfire gem.

Kristen, this was informative and clear (as always), and has helped me decide between Henry H001 and the Browning BL-22. Almost 40 years ago, I saw the Browning Lever Action .243 (with that rotating bolt), and was mesmerized. Brownings are still remarkable, and the BL-22, with its 33-degree action, is in a class of its own. Thank you for your informative, no-hype, down-to-earth commentary.

Any rifle or shotgun made by Miroku is always highly sought after. My Dad owned a 20ga O/U marked Miroku which he imported from Japan during the late 6Os. Thanks for another wonderful video Christine!!

I had a 1972 9422 and a 1951 Marlin I still own. But my two BL-22's I love the best and my 1980 BL goes to the range every time I do. Great review.

I bought mine just last fall! A beautiful grade II with maple stocks. It’s my first rifle (also gun) of my own. I grew up with a daisy powerline pellet/bb gun and occasionally shot my dads marlin semi auto. It wasn’t until last year I decided I wanted a 22 lever gun of my own. I got to look at a bunch of Henry’s (great rifles too!) and this one bl-22. The blonde maple with the engraved receiver got my attention and then my heart. I’ve run at least 700 rounds through it so far and have loved every minute of it. The only thing I had to do was take some red nail polish to the front sight. I HIGHLY recommend this little rifle.

Hey. I have the bl-22 got it about two years ago very nice little rifle. I didn't know there was a grade 1 and 2 when i bought mine, now i am curious as to which i have. Good job on the video. Thanks.
// I now see it's easy to tell the difference between the grade 1 & 2 with the grade 2 having an engraved art work on the receiver. I have the grade 1 and like the dark wood gloss finish. Nice 22 rifle.

I like how the trigger remains on the lever. Is that unusual for lever actions? (I don't recall seeing that before)... and can you shoot faster if you hold down the trigger while you rack it?

I bought a bl 22 grade one with a nickel plated receiver and plain finish walnut stock.
The stock finish isn't shiny but sure looks beautiful. And shoots really accurately. I found out you don't want to come up on the grip because if you do the hammer will bite you when you work the lever.
But I love the gun. It rides along with my BLR 3006 they're a beautiful pair.

Hmm, another .22 to keep an eye open for.. I have a friend working at a large shop that's always buying out collections and estates and I've gotten pretty lucky at times. Maybe one will show up.

Now I miss my BL-22, had it had a better set of open sights I might have still had it. Changed it for a CZ455 that I shoot better, but the BL-22 was fun...

Unfortunately, the main receiver part where all moving parts are inside is made of Aluminium. If I knew before, I'd have preferred a Marlin 39A. The sights are also catastrophic. This and a very heavy trigger pull lead to poor accuracy. I already installed a spring kit, the trigger pull is now really a lot better, but accuracy is still much worse than my Chinese K98 rimfire!

Most 22lr shoot pretty accurate under 50 yards. 50 yd is the standard, not 40. 50 yd separates the men from the boys in accuracy. For any gun in 22lr

The short throw action doesn’t mean anything if it has a horrible trigger. Get a 9422….everything perfect.

I have to say - that is an extremely poor technique of putting your fingers and hand in front of the muzzle as you're sliding the tube feed shut. I was taught to keep your hand below the muzzle as you push the tube closed - you never want to put any body part in front of the muzzle - basic gun safety !
