  • I set out to build the ULTIMATE MECHANICS WORKBENCH, and how to do the whole thing on a budget! 3" thick, mounted on 1/4" angle iron with all the attachments and features a monkey with a tool box needs to get some real work done.
In part 1 we will be assembling the table top and getting everything cut to size. It sounds like a small task, but if you want a table that will last generations, there are a lot of step. We were able to purchase all the materials for this step for only $60!
In subsequent episodes of building this table we will focus on leveling and sealing the top of the table, mounting legs and well as a vice, and making some custom modifications for welding on the table... So Stay Tuned!
    CHECK OUT PART 2:
    • Building The ULTIMATE ...

good trick my dad taught me: save your saw dust and organize it by hard and softwoods. if you ever have to do a repair on something, mix up a thickened clear epoxy with the sawdust and you can make your own color matched wood filler.

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

I was screaming at you but you weren't listening! You should have planned it so you had most of the extra on one end so you could use it somewhere else! It would have required 2 additional clamp rods, but that's a small price to pay. Nice job otherwise and it should last forever. A totally wet rag cleans off most of the extra glue and reduces sanding quite a bit, especially on the underside so you don't have a problem with the legs fitting flat. The wet rag will allow the extra glue to help harden the surface, but will show up when you add the finish unless you sand extensively. Who cares with a workbench that's probably going to get soaked with brake fluid, ATF, and other stuff. Boiled linseed oil will penetrate better if you warm it before applying. This comes from a bench I helped my Dad build.

Thanks for the tip on the finishing, bud. Unfortunately the end on all these pieces were pretty rough, so taking from the middle was the best way to get a proper table.

I made one of these a while back and using the same method I used a roller to the glue, but YOU ONLY APPLY GLUE TO ONE SIDE. It will hold better and you'll have much less to sand/cut. I also put a 40' piece of 5/16 steel bent down 3 inches to cover one end with 3 bolts in the side. It's been an amazing work/welding table.

  • @richardbatters

Excellent job and great idea to pull the 2x4 together! Solid bench! I'm building one similar. My only suggestion to the video would be to cut your 2x4 to a shorter length before assembly, but enough off cut length to allow a circular saw to fully sit on its Mitre plate. A router would finish that edge beautifully or you can run a Facia 2x4 90° to the end cuts and picture frame it gluing and fastening in of course.
Just my 2¢. Very smart using the threaded Rod.
    Great Video
