- I set out to build the ULTIMATE MECHANICS WORKBENCH, and how to do the whole thing on a budget! 3" thick, mounted on 1/4" angle iron with all the attachments and features a monkey with a tool box needs to get some real work done.
In part 2 we are doing all the flattening, leveling, and sanding that will be required to make our rough 2x4 table tpop into the ultimate work station. We used a collection of 36, 50, and 80 grit sand paper on a 3x21" Porter Cable belt sander.

D&E want to ensure that anyone modify or fixing their own vehicle does so in a safe manner which leaves the vehicle in a legal, roadworthy state. In short, DON'T BE A MONKEY WITH A TOOL BOX! If you don't know what you are doing, leave it the professionals!
There better be belt sander racing as bonus footage after part 3. You’ve set the expectations now. (You give us monkeys an inch and we take a mile)
You know what... Deal. If you loyal viewers will stick around until part 3 (this was never meant to be a multi video project) We will build a track and do time trials with some 3x21 sanders.
D&E In The Garage if you still have the fuel filler cover from lake effect you should mount that to a piece of wood and present that as the trophy
@@kevinmcewen1760 😂🤣 that's got to be the best trophy idea!
@@DEInTheGarage Yes! For sure Yes!
I have a 220v 8”wide belt sander.., 🤔. Are there size classes or run what you brung?
Finally! Good quality content to watch while I'm sitting on an icepack! I couldn't be more grateful for this vid. 👊
Honestly dude this was a great project for an automotive content driven channel. I highly enjoyed this and am looking forward to building my own bench now. Thank you !
Thanks buddy! Good luck with yours
I bet you that sander works really good with the vacuum attachment
I have a black & Decker Dragster belt sander that works great but it's no Porter Cable. Nice job Bud.
That is built to Handle an Engine block. Nicely done.
yea buddy! That is the plan!
It’s getting better
get yourself a scraper. Like a paint stripper. Use that to knock the glue down and you can save some time and sandpaper.
I REALLY should have done that
Get the one with the carbide blade.
The sander will work in a pinch, but you should invest in a hand plane. the job you are doing is what they are made for. BTW, nice work.
Love it!
2:37 you got a message.
Loved the video. You are hilarious.
Aw gee.... Thanks!
Try using a leveling plane (manual) rather than a belt sander. You will get far superior results is the same amount to time. You can typically find used plane's at flea markets for a few bucks. If not, get a check ryobi hand-held planer. Belt sanders are great at removing material, but the chances of ending up with flat surface is almost nil.
Are you going with a 5W-30 or ATF finish on the table top? LOL.
LOL. I am going fancy with this one. Going to wipe it down with used royal purple
great work....love the content but if even though its cold, why not sand outside? holy dust batman..keep up the great work
I did not have proper lighting. Unfortunately a lot of the sanding had to be done at night. A better dust collection system is on the to-do list
Should tap the vents in the goggles.
It's a killer looking bench. Wish I was closer to ya cause id come down and maybe put some artsy fartsy design on the top of that for ya! My head is full of ideas. Also I sent you that email. It'll be somewhere around the Nigerian princes email again lol.
Dang... I would love that. Get some custom YJ Dave are and then clear the shit out of it to preserve it. I will shuffle over to the inbox ASAP and get back to you bud
@@DEInTheGarage no rush on the email reply. And as for the bench top I was thinking burning a design on it. Maybe the D&E logo burned in the middle. Unfortunately the trip to you may be too far for me on my dogsled and snowshoes.
Lol razors!
bring back the avalanche!!!
It is coming! Had to take the winter off
Boy, you just can’t stop talking 😊
It has been said I may enjoy the sound of my own voice. Haha. I have a small following, but they are loyal and enjoy the color commentary and I enjoy giving it. Hope you enjoyed some of the video anyway.
Mucho blablabla menos bla bla bla
That is a beautiful bench, I'm going to have to make one or two of those bad boys for myself.
Keep up all the great work and amazing videos.
You might be able to get the rods out with a pipe wrench. Or use a Sawzall /cutsaw with a metal cutting blade to trim them up.
Pipe wrench is a good idea! Thanks!
Love it, couple of comments:
1) Don't try to smack the rod with the BFH. Put two jam nuts on the end, then use an impact wrench on it to spin it out. 2) Using a hand plane or even a electric planer instead of the belt sander...then sand after. 3) You're sanding across the grain with the belt. Need to sand with the grain.
For anyone watching, Vaseline on the all-thread will help keep the glue from sticking. If you miss the vaseline part, to break the seal you can heat up the end of the all thread to help soften the glue and jam 2 nuts together and use that to rotate the all thread
Just had an idea, maybe you could have drilled the holes to fit some electric pvc pipes/tubes and run the allthread inside them?
That way the glue would never come in contact with the rods.
Good job but u talk to much! To finish this u'll need 100 videos
Beautiful bench!... Perfect timing, my friend just built a smaller one just like yours last week. Used linseed oil for finish coat. He should have sunk the bolts like you did. Use the sections you cut off to make cutting boards for your smokers!! Thanks again D&E!!
Thanks buddy! That is a really good idea!
Looks like I’ll be about 17 minutes late for work now.
tadavis12 I mean this video will always be here I don’t think you can get your job back😂I know it’s a joke but I know someone that lost there job because they skip work to watch a RUclips video🤦🏻♂️
A roommate of mine from a while back used to skip work to stay home with his girlfriend cuz she'd beg him to. He lost his job because of this, and she promptly left him because he didn't have a job anymore!
It was a joke. I can start work whatever time I want these days.
@@tadavis12 the other commenter, @Nick J, plainly said in his comment that he knew it was a joke. I knew it was obviously a joke, and chose to use your joke as a segue into telling my funny little anecdote about a former roommate who was a little lacking in the foresight department. Nobody's criticizing you here. Well, except for now, for killing our jokes by forcing us to explain them. I do criticize you for that. But at least nobody was being critical of your original comment. Now that I have sufficiently wasted everyone's time who bothered to read this... Ya'll have a good day! LoL 😂
LOL... I enjoyed the joke. Thanks (as always) for tuning in bud!
I am totally making one
Dont tread on me klaus. Good work🎉
There is an old episode of This Old House that did a belt sander race, wish I knew the episode
I think we might just have to race some sanders at the end of this project
You should round the edges out or bevel them. That way the risk of you hitting the hard sharp 90 degree edge and tearing the it will be almost eliminated. Also if you have kids or a clumsy person around it is less likely to hurt them if they run into it. I would run the sander over it a few passes to round and smooth everything!
Good call. Thanks bud!
@@DEInTheGarage No problem I have been planning to make one of these benches as well for the same reason as you lol. I just wanted to share a tip I was given to help make it all last longer and be more eye catching!
Just a thought but you could have tried unscrewing the threaded bars if you could have got it to turn a few times you could have put it into the chuck of a drill and just let it wind the bar out to late now as you cut the ends off but this may have worked.
That is a very good idea. I did try removing 1 nut and tightening the other side to see if it would break loose, but it just dug the washer in to the board further. My goal for a future project will be to design a better was to be able to remove the rob. I am wondering if greasing it would work
@@DEInTheGarage Try PAM cooking spray on the rods next time, may keep the glue from sticking to them.
I enjoy this build! Like always, things take 3x as long as expected! That's fab work for ya! Nice job, love to see the use of old family tools. Can tell ya how much old hand me down tools I still use! Brings back good memories and imagination thinking of how our old men used them back in the day!
Safety guard? Naw it’s just the spinning wheel of death. Any OSHA reps please advert your eyes lol
OSHA? Never heard of her...
D&E In The Garage she’s a royal pain the foot.
@@DEInTheGarage great answer! LOL
First time viewer, poster and subscribing to your channel. Also a recent transplant to NJ... Jug handles, WTF OVER!? I digress, I ran across your video as I just bought a belt sander to fix my glue up that looks no better than Austin Power’s teeth. I think I screwed up my all thread drill points and I have some serious sanding to do now because I’m serious, it looks bad with boards sticking up on one end but not the other. I also over used my planer trying to glue up the boards in sections of about 4 boards as I thought that would make the final glue up with the all thread even easier and to include clean up planing off the glued up sections. Unfortunately I’m already down to about 2.5 inches so I’m hoping I don’t over sand it now. I’m new to woodworking and needed some pointers, your video helped and provided a lot of other tips on how I could have done better.
What kind of finish are you going to use on the top ? I hope some type of oil finish & may be some coats of wax ? It will be easy to refinish when it comes time.
Was considering Danish Oil
NICE, Watco is a good brand & I would go with Dark Walnut ? It's not dark at all but better than Natural unless you want your bench to look pretty much what it looks like now but with a sheen. Also MAKE SURE YOU DON'T THROW YOUR RAGS IN THE GARBAGE, THEY WILL START A FIRE. If you don't want the ends to crack more I epoxied them before finish or paint ? GOOD LUCK, LOOKS LIKE A DAMN STURDY BENCH TOP.
It'll have its share of transmission fluid and engine oil soon enough, no need to use anything else on it LOL.
5w30, atf, brake fluid it’s easy to just scrap off and the table will not rot out
this series of videos is the first I've seen of your channel - absolutely thoroughly enjoyed, thank you sir!
Doubled 3/4 ply on a 2 x 4 frame spaced 12 in OC would be just as strong, much faster to build.
How many months did it take to clean up the garage? Nice bench!
wood dust and sparks ... great combination :-)
