Sans the ending, which is so lame lol. SHE WAS IN A COMA THE WHOLE TIME. Like cool man, that tells us nothing about the nature of those shadow people. They seem totally inconsequential now.
Loved the rest of the movie though. Anachronistic styles as in this and It Follows are so cool. Easy to fall into that retro melancholy vibe.

I think the very fact that Sarah's dream is about dreams signals that she knows she's in a coma.
And it's highly possible that Sarah isn't even the true identity of the dreamer.
All of the characters are a different side of the true self fighting for different reasons.
The Sarah persona doesn't want to wake up. It's actively denying the calls to wake up. All she desires to put her restless to bed and continue to sleep. It's afraid of something, though I don't know what.
The nerd is the instinctual side that fears what will happen to the body if it never wakes up.
The shadow man is the true self that is buried under all the other personas. Since all the characters are truly just dream characters created by the true self, the shadow man is one thing that connects them.
I think the nerd feels if he finds the shadow man, the mind will realize its true self and awaken, but Sarah put a stop to him so that they she can dream forever and avoid reality.

Woah! I wonder if parts of this storyline were based upon the real-life case of Sarah Scantlin, who fell into a coma at 18 years old in 1984 but regained consciousness after 20 years? She apparently retained memories of what was happening around her while she was in her coma, too! She remembered the tragic events of 9/11, even though she was still in her coma in 2001! There's a fascinating documentary about her story here on RUclips! Crazy stuff, man! It can't be a coincidence that the main character of this movie is also named Sarah, not to even mention the 80s references!

The glitching of the time on the phone towards the end is something lucid dreamers use to wake themselves up inside a dream. It’s a technique called a reality check, because in waking life that wouldn’t happen. The vampire teeth are also something called a “dream sign” that can be used to determine that you’re in a dream (because they are impossible in real life), so she may be laughing partly because she’s starting to wake up in the dream and understand that it isn’t real.

When you are in the waking part of sleep paralysis you are trapped between the dream and consciousness.
It is hellish and scary as hell.

Oh good god, them running away from the glowing eyes, then one by one getting snatched...it reminds me of a recurring nightmare I had in my teens, literally identical to that situation with my friends running from something horrifying with only our phone screens as light...That is some freaky shit right there. Great video!

I don't know if this was intentional, but the actress was reminding me of a small documentary about an actual woman who was in a decades long coma & woke up again. Defying the doctors' expectations. She can't function on her own buy it's amazing.

  • @THEJoeDub22

Well, I can say firsthand that so many aspects of this movie are totally legit. Back in 2017 I went into septic shock and had to be intubated and put into a respirator - and was in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks. I would completely dream while I was under, but very specifically, things that were happening around me, to me at the hospital were 100% seeping into my coma and being reworked by my mind and interpreted as something else but most certainly whatever would be going on would be reflected in some way or another when I was under, first and foremost sensation and physical movement-wise.
For instance, when I was coming out of the sedation but still MOSTLY under, whoever they would be wheeling me through the halls of the hospital I had the feeling and was dreaming I was in the back of a van being kidnapped-interestingly enough, my hands were also strapped to the side of the bed so I wouldn’t pull the tube out accidentally and because I had that tube, it acted and served a similar purpose gag, both in terms of feel and how a gag affects a person, like, say, a kidnap victim who often times WOULD in fact be having their hands/arms bound so they couldn’t move or escape as work as a gag so they couldn’t make noise...
to date, all the experience I had when I was under remain some of the scariest shit I’ve EVER experienced and while I remembered most of it, bits and pieces come back every now and then. Such as when I finally woke up, the nurse taking care of me was his big burly guy-and I was inexplicably scared of him almost. Reason being because he made it into my subconscious dreaming as well and while in it was one of the supposed kidnappers... so because that happened deep down on a much lower level , that’s where it remained until I saw and interacted with him which is when it triggered the fact that I knew him and how I knew him.
I need to see this movie

I haven't watched the movie, but I found a different perspective that marries well.
The title is synonymous to the phrase....
    "A Dream Come True"
As in, wanting something so much that it manifests into reality.
When she's "dreaming", the dream world is her mind tapping into reality, memories, & what's actually happening around her. When she's "awake" that's when she's dreaming.
It's as tho the "real" experiment is to send her clues that will influence her mind into merging both sides (dream & reality); to trigger her to awaken. Movie progression shows how more of "reality" seems to keep increasing its presence into the dream state.
The different scenes gave me clues as to what happened that lead to her being in a comatose state.......
    A group of boys.
A field where her phone was again found (her memory blocked it to protect herself from the trauma she experienced there). Her friend dancing in a club, unaware.
Her eye bloodshot & bleeding & seizure activity (all are symptoms of severe head/brain trauma).
The last phone call she never got to answer was from her mom, which explains why she never answers it.
If they make a sequel called:
    "A Dream"....that would be awesome!!!

    • @fritosnlegoshai
      @fritosnlegoshai 3 года назад +5

Alternatively, since a cell phone is the link to the outside world and the method used to wake her up, maybe it's her mom trying to wake her out of her coma. She got comatose in the 90s when cell phones, much less portable small ones, weren't widely used. A 90s teen wouldn't have an iphone.

When a low budget doesn’t stop an artist from bringing their vision to life, I can only applaud.
    Fascinating topic, too.
I’ve spent a lot of time investigating nightmares that woke me up in a cold sweat (and would sound ridiculously silly to anyone else).
For years a creepy horrifying witch would show up grinning evilly at me from a hole in the ceiling and leaving me paralyzed with fear.
When I finally got strong enough to challenge her, she was just a mother cat trying to hide and protect her kittens. I spent the rest of the dream helping her.
    Never saw her again 🤷🏼‍♀️

The Jim Carey character was the kid who wrote the book. When he killed his lover and wrote the book, then jumped out the hotel window he lost his memory of having done all that. In the parts of the movie where he's detective fingerling thats him reading the book. At the end he goes to the hotel, finds all his writing on the wall and remembers what he did. The film ends with him in prison, implying that he turned himself in for the crime and freed the professor he went to see who was wrongfully convicted for the crime.

LOVED getting my nerd-on for this!!! Okay,
Monster guy: Jung said that "the shadow" (similar to the id but more involved) is our unconscious, secret dark part of ourselves. Jung said, (paraphrasing)"the less the shadow is involved in a persons conscious life, the denser it is". So, someone who is ACTUALLY unconscious could be taken over by their shadow self?
Mother: The Mother archetype, according to Jung, exists in the psyche of everyone, from a very young age. "The Great Mother" nourishes, comforts and protects but also gives the negative experience of NEEDING those things; this implies vulnerability and helplessness.
Persona: Was the friend Zoe the "Persona"? She was stable and had a fun life and she wasn't totally honest with her. She depended on her for comfort, but kept the truth from her.
Possible hole?: There were certainly mobile phones in 2001 (I got my 1st in 1991), but there weren't any freaking SMART PHONES! That part annoyed me
"Weekend at Bernies" came out in 1989, when someone who was 18 (in 2001) would have been 6 years old. Odd choice. BUT it is a movie about a corpse being passed off as a living person.... correlation maybe?
Meme end: at first I hated the cheesy meme ending. But then I realised, it pulls the audience into the story, because many of us have seen this meme over the last decade....are WE actually the ones in the 20 year coma? (screams). That WOULD explain 2020

I thought Myers and Jeremy was the same person. They have the same glasses style. Sarah never sees Myers because she can't. The last time she saw him was when she went into the coma so she always sees him as Jeremy/Young Myers. Also i think Jeremy was one of the doctors in the team that was treating her maybe she had a crush on him and that's why he's so relevant to her.
