So I paused this video at the start. Literally was hooked. Just finished 8 hours straight of watching the show. Unbelievable poor Dan. All he wanted to do was save her but ended up being in the very thing he was saving melody from.
I think the point is Dan and Mel act as “twin comets” and are meant to break away in order to permanently break the barrier. What exactly that entails, who knows but I am excited to see what comes next. I definitely agree that Sam must have known and him and Virgil have much bigger plans. I always enjoy your reviews and am grateful you did this one.
Quite insightful. Comets are often seen as harbingers of destruction and the mention of a comet pair can't be simply descriptive. An idea I had was the Vos Society, Sam and Virgil, have actually imprisoned Khalaygo in the other world and Khalaygo is trying to come into our world so it can go back to its partner, Kharon who keeps coming back every 70 years waiting for it. What gives me that idea is the phrase 'evidence of our devotion, blood and bone, seeping through." The significance of a pair -- Mel and Dan, separated by time. The Baldung Witch's 'blood', and the correct tuning fork, the 'bone'. Regardless, I'd love to see where the show goes. I enjoy stories that give you lots of interesting places to go!

So thrilled to see a great podcast horror/mystery show get picked up and turned into a Netflix series. This could lead to a bunch of cool new shows if studios start optioning horror podcasts.
@@sukiiriinaa yup. The podcast/radio drama is of the same name but the story flow is very different than the show and deals, understandably so, with audio recordings rather than video.
It's a shame. I hate when they do this with shows. There's so many things out there to watch, and if the numbers in the ratings aren't up to par, BAM! to the chopping block the series goes. It's like, "give folks enough time to discover and fall in love with your show before you leave it on a cliffhanger and cancel it" but no, we don't get that. Just a few "bad numbers" and off it goes, literally...
I highly recommend people watch this on their own time, it is definitely worth it. Awesome show. Probably the best psychological horror/creepy show netflix has put out by a long shot.
I actually like this story a lot because it borrows a good amount from one of my favorite Lovecraft stories The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Which isn't one you see all that often so I highly recommend anyone who liked this check it out.
I wonder if the Priest was genuinely trying to help, since we find out later that Kasandra has been feeding Jess the mold through the tea. After finding that out, I think the Priest was trying to make her purge the mold, and that he knew the mold was what was causing her seizures. That's probably why he said not to call an ambulance and why the doctors always say it's in her head: cause the seizures Jess experiences aren't caused by anything physical, but rather by the supernatural entity tied to the mold.
With the show now unfortunately canceled, the entire show by itself is now up to interpretation. My theory for the ending is that when Dan and Mel now in different time periods, it would now mean that they are in a time paradox where Dan has to make sure that everything happens the same. I remember hearing Vigil saying that he got the tapes from a auction, maybe it was Dan that sold him the tapes and had him start the loop all over again.

Its definitely not for everyone as it relies on mystery and atmosphere instead of outright scares. I wish the ending was a bit better, since it does descend into cliche territory in the final episode.
With how Dan ended up in mind, i wouldnt be surprised if there was more of that travel in the future of the show that leads to some of these burning questions being answered- Virgil knowing things and being places, the building being built because it *has to be*, things like that
Speaking of knowing things, and things "having to be" a certain way, perhaps Dan is the one who burns down the apratment building trying to prevent what he remembers from happening?
@@PongoXBongo if hollywood thaught me anything dan is probably gonna try to prevent the burning down of his family home but ends up beeing the cause of the fire in the end
Thank you for your review of the show. Your clear and direct explanation is appreciated. I concur with your assessment of the casting choices. The vibrant portrayal of the past, with each era from the 1920s to the 1990s, was particularly well-executed. The attention to detail in the characters' clothing and the overall aesthetic was impressive. I share your excitement for a potential second season. While it is challenging to maintain the same level of quality across multiple seasons, I am confident that the directors and writers will rise to the occasion. We have seen instances where the second season falls short of the first, but I believe this show has the potential to avoid that pitfall. I look forward to watching more of your reviews. Your concise and direct communication style is a valuable asset, and I appreciate your insights.
I never care how long your videos are, I love them all! The movies/series I've seen, I love your insights. And the ones I haven't, I love your story-telling and explanations.
Funny anecdote: I watched the series with my sister, and when Dan discovered the altar bellow the building he was in, my sister and I started wondering why people keep putting the altar in enclosed spaces if the last three or so times someone tried to bring Khaelego to our dimension it ended on an explosion and the place burned to the grounds... turned out you needed the tuning fork to make the ritual work, but if I was Virgil, I would either make a Stonehedge-style open air cheronite altar, or make the ritual on the roof of the facility, you know, just in case everything explotes again
Um idk about there but here from my part of world. Rituals are to be done on ground level, to connected to earth. It's believed that ghost go toward earth from above. Like dark entities go toward earth.
I loved this series. I love the theory of Sam and Virgil being the same person, and being capable of traveling through time. My personal theory is that the pretend Mel is actually Iris Vos. Once Mel was in the other realm Annabel stopped painting Iris leading me to believe that she is no longer speaking to her from the other side. Maybe she has been helping Virgil in his attempt to make a “permanent” doorway. He had to obviously be aware of her given how much research he has gathered. I feel like she has a much larger role to play later on.
OMFG I’ve been freaking waiting for this EE. I started saying “I can’t freaking wait for FoundFlix’s EE!” 10 minutes into the first damn episode! It’s like hearing my favorite song on the radio after waiting and listening for it for days.
My honest idea is that the brother of Iris is the grandfather of Virgil and Sam. Which is why the facility was built and where Virgil was stationed at for the majority of the film. The facility is also their home.
I have to agree, sorry but yeah rich people do have some weird hobbies but this? This is a generational tradition the Vos family curated for quite some time. I was wondering the same thing.
Glad I watched this, there were some concepts I missed. I like the idea that Virgil and Samuel are the same person who has used time travel to basically conspire with his younger self. I do question whether Dan is actually in the past, though. The Otherworld was described as "like our world, but so much more." If Dan is stuck in the Otherworld, it could just be an Otherworld representation of the past. The spirit is described as desperately lonely and willing to do anything to keep people stuck in their Otherworld; is it such a leap to think that Dan is stuck in some kind of maze in the Otherworld? Lots of questions need answering and I can't wait for a season 2 of Archive 81, maybe we will find out what the title even means!
bro this was literally one of the best shows that i have ever seen. fan made is possible as the show has been completely killed and netflix releases ownership of the ideas and any future endeavors
Guys, I know it's a ton of fun to speculate, but there's no reason to ignore the source material when it is freely available. Check out the podcast, all 3 seasons are there. There are obviously some differences, but the story beats are there. The one disservice this ending explained did was not mentioning the very obvious references to Dante's Divine Comedy. - The main character is named Dan Turner (Dan T, Dante). - He is being led by a character literally named Virgil. A second guide named Beatrice also exists in the form of Beatriz, a psychic who acts as a kind of guide to Melody, and therefore Dan. - Both Melody and Dan are heavily impacted by fire, you know, like an "Inferno." - Tamara is working on a piece called "Purgatory," and describes her work as "not like Puccini." Puccini composed an opera which very heavily alluded to "Dante," but was on the lighter side, whereas Tamara is working on very dark pieces, hence "not like Puccini." - The comet is named Charon, which is also the name of the ferryman who brought the newly dead souls across the river Acheron (the river of pain, woe, or sorrow, something Dan and Melody are very familiar with) to Hades. It's no coincidence that the 7th episode (the "flashback" episode) is called "The Ferryman." The podcast itself, in season 2, is pretty clear that the Otherworld is bad place. It's hellish. Hades in Christianity is another word for hell. That said, the Greek Hades was simply the underworld, or "otherworld." Tartarus, which is sort of a section of Hades, is the more appropriate analogue for Christian Hell. Kaelego is described as both a god and a demon, which again feels like a clash between Greek and Christian interpretations of Hades. In any case, Hades was the god of the dead, and the Otherworld in Archive 81 is very closely related to death, so it's not too much of a stretch to see Kaelego being heavily influenced by Hades. All of that is not to take away from the other references too. Lovecraft certainly also seems to be an influence here (cults and the such, the mold). There's certainly a callback to "The Shining" as well, what with a man being isolated in a remote location to work, and obvious concerns about his sanity (they even refer to it in the first episode). Some of Samuel's pseudonyms make reference to famous occultists like Aleister Crowley. Anyway, personally, I loved it. I see some people complaining that they showed the monster too early, but that's kind of missing the point. The demon existing and being shown isn't all that important. The horror in this show is not about seeing a demon, that he even exists is required for the plot, so showing him early isn't an issue or blowing their load early. The series is creepy without Kaelego showing up early. Knowing that he is "real" makes it even creepier.
Loved this series - randomly came across it trying to find a background show to chill out while decorating the living room - sufficed to say did not get much done that day and binged them in one sitting! Hope they make more 🤞 I also love that the comet is called Kharon - another Karen causing bad vibes 😂😂
Kharon/Charon is the Ferryman of Hades that carries souls across the river Styx. It's expounded quite differently in the podcast but the placement is not a coincidence.
This show was so excellent I really enjoyed it. Apparently the Podcast it's based on is 3 seasons in so I'm gonna check that out as well. Edit: also Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (the guys behind resolution, Spring, The Endless, synchronic and the new "Something in the Dirt") directed 2 episodes.
Please always do this, I’ve gotten strangely used to your being my go-to viewing guy.🙂I think🤔”what to watch…” and boom there you are with your great humor, snark and spot on analysis.
My man, the bit where you approach the camera and end the sentence with “ice-cream after” had me in stitches, knee slapping hilarious man! This was a enjoyable one for sure, keep up the great content my dude!
The fact that the guy who hired him is named “Virgil” and the main character is named “Dan” which is not far off from “Dante”… like Dante’s Inferno? Makes you kinda wonder…
The Sam and Vergil theory makes sense. It always felt like Sam knew stuff before it happened and acted accordingly to every situation. The way he acted coy is way too similar to Vergil even as brothers. And Vergil doesn't need the tapes because he was there.
I was into the podcast too way back when it started. Folks on the audio drama forums who have taken in both say they changed quite a bit for the Netflix series. So whether you come in from the podcast or from the Netflix series you should get enough new to make it worthwhile to check out both versions.
This show is actually based on a podcast, there’s three seasons with the first two being Dan’s story. It’s quite good, there are some differences between it and the show, but if you want more of the universe definitely give it a listen
The medium scene is one of my favorite scenes in all of horror, the fear i felt when she started reading off the conversations they had been having and then started peeling her face off was crazy.
I finally return to this video after getting like 5 minutes in and realizing I wanted to watch the show unspoiled! Thanks so much for covering the show, and also for this excellent, attentive analysis, which did wonders to combat my bad habit of only being able to give a maximum of 90% of my attention to a tv show. One element of the show which I'm still mulling over is the way Julia describes Kaelego as "lonely" in its otherworld. Why would an entity of pure destruction want human company? It makes me wonder if Kaelego wants something perhaps more complex and specific than "just" destruction.
I have watched this show at least 7 times from start to finish. There's just something so wierd and addictive about it that I cannot stop rewatching it..
For anyone who enjoyed this series, I’d definitely recommend listening to the podcast, as it’s literally 100 times better, aswell as the tv series cut a lot of important details and plot points from the series, the creeping dread everyone is talking about in the comments here is much better in the Podcast, just for the love of god listen to the podcast, StraightTMA was right, just about the wrong podcast to tv adaptation, my girl Melody didn’t deserve to be done dirty like that
They downplayed Melody and her friends relationship in the Netflix show. I'm glad they gave Ratty a larger role in the TV show. And I hope season 2 has the Leviathans.
@@andrewmelean8259 each regular episode is between 15 minutes to a half an hour, and there are 32 episodes out right now, with a 3 hour long mini series, you could probably finish it in a day or 2 if you binged it
I don't understand how you can feel creeping dread from audio by itself. Certainly not the same kind of dread that I felt staring at those tapes wondering what creepy shit was bout to pop out during that chanting
I loved this series so much, each episode is so unsettling that it leads you at the edge of your seat. My only issue was with the supernatural demon, if the ritual brings people into his world then how does he come out and into the real world?
I assume that when the ritual is actually done properly(done with the proper tuning folk) it becomes a two way door rather than just trapping people when done wrong since Mel actually escaped when the door was opened unlike Iris when the door was opened the second time.
@@Vicerion17 Yeah and they didnt need a sacrifice, so having a Baldur (probably not the right spelling) do the ritual properly opens then door since its their bloodline and magic.
i am not a huge fan of series in general, but this one caught my attention and i loved every second of the show, the way it kept me hooked in the story just blows my mind
Did anyone else think Cassandra was actually Rose? She would have been that age and we never see what happens after the portal is opened. Maybe something does possess her body after? She had the necklace as well and was just very strange in general.

So disappointed in Netflix cancelling this show especially since it charted so well. Really wish another streaming service would pick it up but seems like the creators of the show arent even trying for that unfortunately. If i were them i would. I could see this show being on Hulu as well. Maybe some day theyll try to make it happen. We can only hope.

The screen flicker when you said Melody's name at 1:02:20 had me thinking you were trying to mess with us putting images in your videos :D :D Turned out it was just the black borders disappearing for a second and you sitting in the background
I appreciated/noticed how it looks like the way the walls are painted incompletely create a resemblance of people are watching the guy at 48:38 Also appreciated all of the still images of the demon/monster in the background through out the show. Like at 57:54 in the top right. Can see the monster over Annabelle on the right hand corner.
Thank you for covering this.. I really loved this show, I got right into it and couldn't get enough. The idea that Virgil could BE Samuel literally just blew my mind! I wonder if Dan is in a new divergent timeline, created basically because this shit happened. I thought all the bal dungs or whatever had renounced their powers like as a coven long ago, so I didn't think any of them had had actual powers for some time.. So I didn't consider Mel potentially gaining powers, guess we'll see.
41:30 this video got a well deserved like from me after the "well at least he was covering his own tracks..... That's a train joke" 🤣 Dead panning at its finest!
I absolutely loved the podcast! I’m one of those who thinks some stuff should stay separate. However…. Wow ! The film adaptation truly rocked it . There are a few things that were not as fluid but despite the cheesy overlay I truly think they did a good job. I would personally pay a lot to get like a 20 year long podcast continuum. Hahahah I am obsessed sorry 😂
I also loved the podcast. Season 2 threw me for a loop initially, but I stuck with it and I think that seasons 2 and 3 are what make it a great podcast. If it had just kept the season 1 format it would have just been a less interesting Magnus Archives.
I tried to get into this show today in an effort to watch more new content and not rewatch the same junk over and over. And what do I find out? Netflix already chose to cancel it! This is why I generally avoid watching their Originals when 90% of the time they just cancel them the moment it turns out their algorithms don't detect the show will be some kind of run away success by Season 1.
I'm so glad I found your channel, all other movie reviewers use "spooky" voices and its annoying, I like your upbeat voice explaining a scary show instead.
The podcast goes off the rails in the best ways. I find that while I enjoyed the Netflix show, I’m a little saddened that it looks like we might not get any of the really wild stuff from the podcast.
That last theory on Sam being Vergil makes to much sence, explaining why only Mel came back to the present after Sam grabbed her but wasnt anywhere around because he was already there in that time period as Vergil.
Not really, since he didn't want to release Sam and saying he would be dead anyways since that realm is not conducive to life. If he was Sam he would've agreed to release himself and would've known you could live in there.

I like the twin comets thing! I’m thinking that Sam and Vergil might be the same person? Sam could’ve been teleported to the past mansion maybe? Idk!
@@AjaxOutlaw this is what I was thinking. The ritual intersected all of the strings through the root event. Samuel got kicked back to the 20's imo
Mel could now be the comet that will destroy the world
Quite insightful.

I HATE THAT THIS SHOW WAS CANCELED
It is so not okay that Dan is just stuck in another dimension.
I was so pissed.
Me too
Same I loved it
I highly recommend people watch this on their own time, it is definitely worth it. Awesome show. Probably the best psychological horror/creepy show netflix has put out by a long shot.
I watched the first episode and it was tooo scary for me so now I’m here because I still want to know what happens.
Too bad Netflix is Netflix and they cancelled after the first season

AN HOUR AND A HALF LONG FOUNDFLIX WHAT A GREAT MONDAY
I KNOW RIGHT!!!! 😃
Came here to show the same appreciation!

I enjoyed this series. The mystery element and cosmic unknown/horror attributed to the cult and entity are very lovecraftian.
I mean, at least they didn't replace 1/4th of his body with a radio.... right??

@@PongoXBongo if hollywood thaught me anything dan is probably gonna try to prevent the burning down of his family home but ends up beeing the cause of the fire in the end
I think it’s funny how every time I finish a movie or show, you’re always here to explain it right after 💀 good videos man!
I highly enjoyed "Archive 81" and glad it's a series and not a condensed movie. It kept me hooked.
I love how the video is 81 minutes long, great video love you guys!!!
Good catch
Funny anecdote: I watched the series with my sister, and when Dan discovered the altar bellow the building he was in, my sister and I started wondering why people keep putting the altar in enclosed spaces if the last three or so times someone tried to bring Khaelego to our dimension it ended on an explosion and the place burned to the grounds... turned out you needed the tuning fork to make the ritual work, but if I was Virgil, I would either make a Stonehedge-style open air cheronite altar, or make the ritual on the roof of the facility, you know, just in case everything explotes again
Lol
Um idk about there but here from my part of world. Rituals are to be done on ground level, to connected to earth. It's believed that ghost go toward earth from above. Like dark entities go toward earth.
I think it was the same exact place all three times
Like the altar never mover right?
@@tannerholechek5873 no, the visser was in the city. the new altar is out of town
Disappointed that they cancelled this gem. Had fun watching this, felt like something refreshing compared to all the other Netflix shows.
I Dont think so, because the Visser was on top of the old mansion, and it was in NEW York. The facility Dan is in is in the Catskills
I watched it one go and gotta say, Mark is the one best friend to have
Can't help thinking about Dante, with Virgil as an unreliable mysterious guide through purgatory...

What an absolute treat, I hope one day found flix does a podcast, I could listen all day
Yes! Chris is the type of guy who could make almost anything sound interesting :)
- Both Melody and Dan are heavily impacted by fire, you know, like an "Inferno."
- Tamara is working on a piece called "Purgatory," and describes her work as "not like Puccini." Puccini composed an opera which very heavily alluded to "Dante," but was on the lighter side, whereas Tamara is working on very dark pieces, hence "not like Puccini."
- The comet is named Charon, which is also the name of the ferryman who brought the newly dead souls across the river Acheron (the river of pain, woe, or sorrow, something Dan and Melody are very familiar with) to Hades. It's no coincidence that the 7th episode (the "flashback" episode) is called "The Ferryman."
The podcast itself, in season 2, is pretty clear that the Otherworld is bad place.
Hope they make more 🤞
I also love that the comet is called Kharon - another Karen causing bad vibes 😂😂
Kharon/Charon is the Ferryman of Hades that carries souls across the river Styx. It's expounded quite differently in the podcast but the placement is not a coincidence.
My husband and I lost sleep at the end of a few days staying up to watch episodes 😅
You should definitely watch the podcast 👀👀
This show was so excellent I really enjoyed it. Apparently the Podcast it's based on is 3 seasons in so I'm gonna check that out as well. Edit: also Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (the guys behind resolution, Spring, The Endless, synchronic and the new "Something in the Dirt") directed 2 episodes.
When I saw Benson and Moorhead's name I lost it with excitement. Wish they could have more involvement if there is a Season 2

The fact that the guy who hired him is named “Virgil” and the main character is named “Dan” which is not far off from “Dante”… like Dante’s Inferno? Makes you kinda wonder…
"Recent hit Netflix series" Netflix cancels it. Like do they even pay attention at all?
Sadly, there's no season 2. Dan is stuck in 1994.
The Sam and Vergil theory makes sense. It always felt like Sam knew stuff before it happened and acted accordingly to every situation. The way he acted coy is way too similar to Vergil even as brothers. And Vergil doesn't need the tapes because he was there.

I'm so sick of Netflix canceling shows that are good and renewing pieces of garbage.
For some reason this reminded me of The OA, another show on Netflix. That would be awesome if Foundflix did a video on it!
