About why there’s no sound from Verdine White, my opinion is, there’s some problems on his signal chain that day, and maybe he just don’t want to waste the time to figure out what’s going on on his signal chain(It was a busy, tight schedule and complicated stage situation live), so maybe he just tried to played it without amplified.
Ray-Lin Chang come on really??? You really believe that? He’s acting as a bassplayer, bit when it comes down to real exposure, suddenly No volume, Or when you look at his namm demo’s...What is he doing??? He is not real man!
Man you gotta be kidding me. There was no issue with the signal chain? He turned down on purpose. Lamest excuse ever. No bass player does that. You swap cables, etc until you are heard.
Well kids, Grandpa has been in two wars, has been married 3 times. Been shot at, has raced nashcar. But funk that, let me tell you about that night a saw Graham / Miller / White play their as% off
For those saying that can not hear Verdine, look at where his hands are placed and watch Marcus when they play Shining Star. You can clearly hear both (Marcus was lower on Shining Star). He is playing at the lower register once his sound came on. It was not on or very low at the beginning
This trio is great. Verdine, Larry & Marcus. I would add Bernard Edwards ( who died) Louis Johnson (died also) Mark Adam's (of Slave who died) & Stanley Clarke.
These here are some of the Greatest ever bassist... There are others to like Nathan East, Stanley Clarke to name a few... Awesome footage of these Greats... Thank you for sharing this video...
Some commenters on this video have an issue with Verdine White’s ability to play bass, because he doesn’t slap strings like Larry Graham or others, but Verdine’s style was never to slap. If you want to dismiss non-slippers from what you consider talented, then such persons as Bob Babbitt, Paul McCartney and of course the non talented James Jameson would not make your vaunted list.
Craig Williams the issue is, that Verdine didn’t play at all. He’s a fraude on bass. Watch his NAMM videos. 9 years olds are better. Verdine is def not the bass recording artist of EW&F. He diddn’t do shit in this video besides talking “ah ah ah ah ah”
I think that verdine white's Bass playing is remarkable and I truly love everything about his music!!! Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything bad about any one of them they are my teacher because if not for the music that they made, then I myself couldn't play 😊😊😊. I've been playing Bass guitar for 40+years and they are still dragging me through the mud in a good way. I would love to meet all of them One day just to talk with them. I truly appreciate the work that they have done and are still doing. God bless all of you thank you from my ❤️.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
So great to see all the "expert" critiques of these legends! If you played at all, you'd appreciate what each of these guys has meant to the evolution of instrument over the last 30 years. If you're "trying" to play and haven't made to these guys level, keep your jealousies to yourself and either listen or take your shallow comments elsewhere. Thanks for the once-in-a-lifetime post...
Rod W it amazes me. I could genuinely appreciate what each contributed in the piece. And over their careers too. Some people are conditioned to find fault. And then wiggle around to justify it.
There are so many bad ass bass players out there it's impossible to pick the best one i think it all depends on the songs they played on if it was a hit or not🎸🎸🎶🎸🎸
I don't hear or feel Verdine on this one. As a bassist, I can look at the hands of Graham and Miller and tell what they are playing. You don't even really need to be a bassist to do that. But where is Verdine? If he is playing, his volume is LOW. I always saw Verdine White as a showman for EWF and a good one at that. But a bassist? Well let's just say, I have taken lessons from watching Graham and Miller over the last 30 years. They are both innovators.
Lanaya Baker Verdine is just playing an open E string on most of the parts you are talking about. Proof - when Larry Graham and Marcus start playing chords at 5:44, they look at Verdine and he is just playing with that same ole open E string while they really PLAY their basses. He was out gunned on this one. Not that it was a competition, but he was outta his league.
Adrion Bell Earth wind and fire is his neighborhood; when he is out of it,….he's lost. he knows it, but he, to the public, is the king,…..all that jumping around and now his licks and louis satterfield's licks are on audio tracks/midi tracks, and audio-to-midi-tracks; EWF are a theatrics band; very very good but it is what it is; we are all as unique as our fingerprints, and thats a fact!
Adrion Bell Outta of his league ? YOU know nowt about the Bass ... it was a Larry Graham slap me on my back night ... Verdine is different class .. o & he a personality as well something Mr Larry has not !
youre right the bass player they used was the guy who taught verdine how to play he was a trumbone player and arranger named Louis Satterfield,,he even has a bass book on how to play bass a gem if you can get it
There's no denying that both Marcus and Larry are some tight players but Verdine have the best face and showmanship,he always looks happy when playing bass!
Very nice of Marcus to cover for Mr. White. The bass line at the end was written by Mr. White how come he's all over the finger board while the other two are playing with ease within a scale? I'm just saying.../
I just watched it for maybe the 20th time with headphones on. Somebody please edit Verdine White out of the video! First they have to wait for minutes before Verdine joins in cause he has no sound, wiring and stuff. Then it’s all Larry and Marcus doing all of the funky stuff. The only sound Verdine is making is with his mouth. When Marcus and Larry play Shining Star, Verdine does other stuff according to his hands movement but not shining star and NO sound! There are a few moment where Larry and Marcus did a break...Verdine “played” on but you don’t here him. And by the hands movement and positioning and the many times he is touching the string, you even wonder what the hell he is up to. Also, why is Verdine watching constantly to the hands of Larry and Marcus? Why not checking up his sound? Well, that’s because he turned down his volume all the way down. Larry plays with a loop, Verdine didn’t do anything. Another proof and video he got exposed. Can’t watch this anymore. Such a shame of the EW&F legacy. For anyone interested, watch Verdine videos on RUclips, videos from the past and videos nowadays at the NAMM bass demo’s. He is not the funky legendary bass player we all think he is. He’s fake. Bass forums are making fun of him for years because it’s more then obvious he can’t play. If you are a Marcus and Larry fan, you will recognize their sounds. Please tell me what Verdine did and what his sound sounds like.

While there is no mistaking that Larry Graham is the father of Thumping (Slap Bass) and Marcus Miller is the new reigning Prince, I find it interesting and incredible when Verdine White suddenly comes alive and hits that "Serpentine Fire" bass lick around minute 9:50 of this video. LOL I've been a Larry Graham fan since he first started and I remember buying Marcus Miller's first album and thinking I was better than him (boy, was I stupid), but when it comes down to it for all of us bass players, NO ONE will ever have the stage presence and legacy of hits that Verdine White has. He is simply a BEAST on stage and those Earth, Wind & Fire bass lines are UNTOUCHABLE.
This is DAMN bad, I thought I see Larry slap at the pick-ups, that most Loius Johnson who does that, but the 4 beats to the bar and B-D-and-E is holy HELL. To see Larry play at the neck in high D is a monster
He's just holding it down. Three people going nuts would be too much for the ears. He doesn't even play slap which is good for him the other two are masters at it but they could probably never wrote a song like Verdine could. They are masters at what they do. It's a not a competition just a bit of back patting and crowd pleasing. Chill out man the Sun is shining.
