    I was at Wrestlemania 13 & loved this match so much. I met Steve Austin in 2007 & told him how I was at the show & he talked to me for few minutes about the match - how he thought they were going to 'stink the joint out' (same expression he used when he inducted Bret into the HOF the year prior). I asked him why he thought that & he said he just didn't think it'd be a good match given the stipulation. I told him it was one of the best matches I've ever seen live & he said, 'I appreciate you saying that.' Such a nice guy 🙂

      Bret was impeccable in the ring. I bet there are hundreds of instances like that where he just had the coordination and know-how to make everything flow seamlessly despite a little hiccup.
      I don't understand people who say there was nothing flashy about him. He was a grounded and realistic wrestler for sure, but he created tons of cool visuals like the Figure-4 on the turnbuckle.
      Definitely the best (for me) in the ring.

      to an extent, fans are at fault as well.
      I mean, think about how ridiculous it is that the fans that are the most rabid about it (the "die hard" fans) seem to be the ones that are mostly like to chant "this is awesome" instead of cheering on their favorite (as if the outcome of a match, even if it's a (supposed) heated feud, doesn't matter, as long as it's a good spectacle).

    • @Airdathegamer
      @Airdathegamer 4 года назад +2

      Hybrid Eye78 I couldn’t disagree more. I don’t think Hogan vs Andre is that great of a match. It’s spectacular, and it’s a landmark moment, but it’s not that great on its own. I also disagree with the money aspect. I think what matters in a wrestling match, just like with any other form of story, is creating meaningful emotion and thought in the viewers, which usually results in a lot of money but not always. I think how much a match makes money is a measure of its success, but not a measured its “greatness”. Finally I would like to add that this match is incredibly successful money-wise. Stone Cold couldn’t have gotten over on that level and moved that much merchandise without this match. Scsa merchandise? That’s money.

    • @Airdathegamer
      @Airdathegamer 4 года назад +4

      Hybrid Eye78 I’m sure loads of fans have seen it. It’s pretty much the first match you get recommended when you get into wrestling. I still have my WWE network subscription because of this match, and I’m pretty sure that’s the case with a lot of people. And look, it might seem like I completely shat on it, but Hogan vs Andre is great. It’s one of the defining moments in all of wrestling. I’m just saying: if you had no idea who Hogan and Andre were and would become, it wouldn’t be anything to write home about. I don’t think this is the case with Austin vs Bret.
      And as far as business goes, you seem to have a very faulty idea of what makes a financially successful match. WM13 didn’t draw because the crowds were not the previous PPVs. After this match WWF started drawing more crowds if I’m not mistaken. And you also have to take into consideration how this match pretty much made the biggest cash-cow in the history of the business. They were selling SCSA video cassettes with his blood soaked face from this match as their cover. Can you imagine how much money was made off those tapes, let alone the horde of other Stone Cold merchandise that was sold?

  • @johnnyskinwalker4095

    • @johnnyskinwalker4095
      @johnnyskinwalker4095 4 года назад +7

      @@kant5696 But I feel that in the ring Bret always came off like a heel. The way he threw his punches, the kicks, etc...And I will say the same with Scott Hall also and maybe even Benoit. Such brutal offense. Sort of the opposite of a Ricky Steamboat who while badass, was always a clear face cause of how graceful he was. They all started as heel and I'm wondering if they shouldn't have changed their style when they became faces the first time. Cause they wrestled the same way as both heel and face.

    • @kant5696
      @kant5696 4 года назад +5

      Johnny Skinwalker I always saw Bret as a face because he was so technically sound that he would win clean and you would buy it cause of how good he was. Benoit I saw as a heel cause how sharp or rough his style was (his snap suplex for example). Scott halls razor persona sold as a heel through his video clips before his debut. But eventually he turned into “he’s so bad he’s good/cool”. But honestly these guys were good to pull off both in my opinion. Their styles in the ring didn’t change drastically but I guess it’s psychology like cornette said. It’s the lil things you do to sway the people

    This match is a masterwork of in-ring storytelling, atmosphere and perhaps the most neglected ingredient today and that is that gritty, raw, violent feel. It didn't look rehearsed or overly planned so it was as crisp as possible, it all came off as spontaneous as though these were two guys that simply wanted to hurt one another. So many guys today just go from one spot to the next, there's no brawling or struggle or looking like they "earned" that spot. The best part about this is how Bret Hart and Austin show why they're worth their praise since they wrestled a much different match from their Survivor Series encounter and it made sense in the context of their feud.
    It was also a great advancement of Bret's character who went from the archetypal babyface into a self-righteous heel that was disillusioned by the rapidly changing landscape around him. Like a proud knight becoming a terrorizing zealot.

      And the guys that do "sell" nowadays don't do it properly, not like how guys like Bret and Austin do. Bret didn't get a chance to really show his selling skills in this but imo nobody was better at selling. People like to point at guys like Hennig, Ziggler and HBK as great sellers and at times they are but to me I think they just oversell to the point where it looks comical and fake. Bret sold like it was real.
      You rarely saw him completely motionless when he was selling cause if he was motionless and knocked out why wouldn't the opponent just pin him then? So it doesn't make sense, so Bret would sell like he was in agony, conscious but in agony. He'd bend his spine back, kick his legs or role around in pain to show how hurt he was but he wouldn't just lay motionless unless he was playing "possum". He also wouldn't do a complete flip on a punch, which defies the laws of physics and completely insults the viewers intelligence like oversellers like HBK and Ziggler do.

    I always find it funny when you hear people who said then and now that the NWA style would never work in the WWF etc. Yet the greatest match in WrestleMania history and one of the most important matches in WWF history is a match that is textbook straight out of the territories grudge match.
    Also, when Bret took the bump to the floor, he didn't take the blade from his wrist tape, he actually spat it out his mouth. Bret was an artist with the blade and I know he wasn't the only one to keep it in his mouth but considering how safe he was with everything I always felt it was unnecessary and dangerous for him to do so.
    Another thing missing in today's wrestling is tension backstage in promos before big matches. You can tell 95% of guys today have never been in a real fight in their lives. In any combat sport you can almost taste the tension backstage on fight night, yet watch AEW which is supposedly "sports based wrestling" and the guys are goofing off in promos before matches. Everything about the products today scream that none of these guys actually have been in a real fight or been around anyone else who has. Just a bunch of kids playing wrestler in their PJs on moms mattress. That's what AEW looks like.

      Funnily enough, I always thought Michaels was great at hiding when he was getting colour. Michaels used a very effective technique in that he would cut himself just before he took the bump or shot. Then that way you're not seeing him go anywhere near his head afterwards then the blood comes. It's subliminal and very effective. It can still be done. The referees are still there to be used, the difference is that too many guys today are too preoccupied with how many moves they can do rather than perfecting their craft as as pro wrestler by doing things such as you just mentioned.

    Personally I think WM13 was highly underrated! I know Taker vs Sid wasn't a classic, but I was excited to see Taker as champion again after 6 years and as a babyface! And my friends and I all popped for the Road Warriors vs NOD streetfight! And of course, what more can you say about Bret vs Austin?! There aren't any moments like that in wrestling today I'll tell you! Even though you had Mankind and Austin 3:16 and ECW invasions in 96, Bret vs Austin at WM13 felt like the birth of the Attitude Era to me!
    ...and I can't believe Corny couldn't remember the previous really bloody WWF match before this match, considering he was in the match! Bulldog vs Bret from In Your House December 95.

Back when in-ring psychology was more about actually hurting your opponent than flipping and flying everywhere without it doing anything cause the guys would stand up immediately afterwards. Austin/Bret selling the moves, even after the match is over with Austin selling the leg. god damn why cant wrestling be this good again?

    The one of biggest false narratives or "mandala effects" in wrestling is that Austin instantly became this giant star after the KOTR 96 promo when that simply wasn't the case. Austin did not get popular overnight, hell he was on the pre show at Summerslam that year wrestling Yokozuna. It wasn't until he called out Bret in late October 96 and eventually feuded with him where he became popular. Bret MADE Austin. The vast majority of the fans didn't care about Austin's schtict until he started to doing it with the then biggest star in the company and most beloved wrestler.
    Plus even though Bret won both of their high profile matches (SS96 and this one) Bret made sure Steve looked like a million bucks in both, and he always made sure Steve got the upper hand in backstage fights or pull aparts on RAW which made Steve look like a badass. Yeah Steve would've eventually got over as long as WWE didn't just totally screw it up but Bret expedited that big time and launched him even higher and quicker than it would have been otherwise. That's why to this day Steve holds Bret in such high regard cause he knows how instrumental he was to his career.

    • @jamesgolder373

      100 percent and as a austin fan it's impossible to not respect what bret Hart did for him and his career by putting him over that massively and we got one of the best matches ever due to the story they both told and this is what made Austin the megastar he became as you rightly pointed out.. Bret has to take a massive amount of credit for austins rise to superstardom and this wasnt even the main event at mania but man did they steal the show that night

    • @apostolostvable
      @apostolostvable 3 года назад +1

      Yes, the feud with Bret in late 96-early 97 made him a main event mainstay. Bret and Austin were also friendly backstage and Bret realized that Steve had star written all over him, which is why he picked him to feud with when he returned in October. Bret also said in an interview Austin pleaded with him to come back because Shawn was an idiot and a poor locker-room leader.
      But, at least after KOTR 96, fans did start taking notice since Austin was given a lot more time with the mic. I always found it strange that Marc Mero was actually picked to become IC Champ that summer despite Austin being a vastly superior worker and talker (he carried Mero to a very good match at KOTR no less).
