You were so stupid altogether with all your "mhmh mhm"-complaints here an below! this nice guy was just attentive and listening carefully and concentrated what she said, and not wasting unnecessary waffle like you do!
2 minutes & 51 seconds, yet this video is full of goodies. If you’re able to actually listen and concentrate on what she’s trying to get across, there’s lots of priceless tips and tricks from one of the best guitarists alive right now. And did I mention that she’s also stunningly gorgeous?
Fantastic! So great to understand the balance of the sound creation regarding the nails. More flesh tones it down and makes it warmer. More nails brightens it up and increases sound. There's a perfect balance to be achieved.
There are 23 mhms in the video. Not considering the 8 second title at the beginning and the 8 second at the end of the video, the total length is 2 minute 35 second. So... 141 second divided by 23 mhm equals 1 mhm every 6,1 second in average. #dunnowhattosay
ty ana, just fixed my biggest problem in last min of the video ... best solutions are always like: how didn't I think of that before? it's so logical ...
This is so fantastic! Thank you so much, SiccasGuitars. I just want to show some appreciation for this marvelous resource. Ana is brilliant, a masterful musician and an immensely talented person, we are so lucky to have her advice on here. May God bless you all.
Great ! I was having this problem on resonator slide, some harshness which really stuck out. Turned my hand slightly and problem solved. Great tip Ana. I rarely listen to classical guitar and yet I have watched and listened to you for several days. Great performances !
My favorite classical guitarist and an awesome RUclips channel help me at exactly the right moment unexpectedly. i wish I could give this video more love. Thank you for posting this!!!!!!!
I feel it's because of intimidation from such a grand figure in classical guitar! I feel as though I too would be left dumbfounded in a master class with such a great player! And beautiful as well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
He’s sitting with one of the best, if not the best guitarist in the world. He shouldn’t be saying anything, he’s trying to absorb what he’s is being told.
This is a 2 year old comment but I almost gagged when I read it. "if not the best guitarist in the world." is one of the most grossly over exaggerated compliments you could ever give to someone so undeserving. I love her playing and I know she's accomplished, but she is far from the even the top 50 worlds best guitarist, let alone THE best haha. She's just one of the more famous. This doesn't mean she could play better than Tarrega, Segovia, Bream, Williams, or even David Russel, not to mention the amazing orient guitarists who could blow her out of the water as well.
" Very Good Job on ( vdc ) Istructional/Lesson ". .. Many Complit to Mrs. Vidovic for your Work's on Music/Guitar Concept. .. So' Good ... ☺😊😀/💙💙💙/👍👌👏👋
Took me like 5 times watching back this video to finally pay attention to Ana. If only there were something like "mhm removal" (like noise removal) in audio editors would be awesome.
Dude, when you get personal advice from a literal legend in the field, you should feel honored and get motivated to improve. Anyone who can't take constructive criticism especially when it comes from an expert probably isn't cut out for this sort of thing anyway. The whole reason he probably did this was to get better and I bet he took the advice and is a far better player now.
SuperSJ agreed. But what I’m saying is his body language looked like he wasn’t try to hear it. Being humble shows in your body language as well. Humility is needed for needed feedback
I use 75% nail 25% flesh. It works for me and the tone is pretty good everyone has to Figure out what is good for them cuz everyone’s body is different
Mhm... Mhmm... Mhm... Ahaàa... Oh... Mhm... Mhm. I can relate to this guy; this is pretty common when you play for someone that is light years beyond your level. It actually happened to me almost a week ago when I had a short, 30 minute, masterclass with Jay Kacherski (Texas Guitar Quartet). I was like that the whole time, and, to make it even more akward, I was late. Definitely not one of my brightest moments, but absolutely a great experience. I just wish I had a little more time. Just to give a little bit of context, at the moment I'm a senior in high school student, I'm planning on being a Music Major, and the piece I performed was Prelude in D minor BWV 999.
Isn't it also a matter personal preference when it comes to playing with nail, flesh or nail-&-flesh? I mean it depends on what sound and style we want to achieve and uphold.
Sure. I think we always have the choice to ignore the advice of our teacher. It is after all, merely instruction, for which I presume this gentleman sought out. Classical music is not considered a 'free form' genre like Blues or Jazz. It is very disciplined and is to be played as a faithful representation of the piece. Also, as a listener, I agree with her advice. I don't like to hear the nail 'plucking' the string. I want to hear the guitar 'playing', not the guitar 'being played'.
Well I think we really should respect and listen to other guitarists, specially ones who have far more experience and a much larger knowledge bank. But from what I've heard regarding this, it depends on which "guitar school" you belong to. I know Tarrega totally changed his technique after a number of years and played with pretty much no nail after all, which means also only flesh. Whilst other great guitarist would condone the technique he used... This is what I can remember at least.
John Williams had a perpendicular R.H to the strings,no-one would disagree that he had the right tone! Some at right angles like Anna, some at more square like John Williams.,depends what you find more stable.
Am I just blind with lust or does Ana posses the aesthetics f a goddess and supernatural talent that makes my ears cry? My mere mortal vision can only take in so much beauty in the presence of her other worldly glow. Of course she will say she's just like any of us ....mhmm ok.
I am not really a superficial person, but one thing I noticed was, classical guitar players often look a bit... weird (=different)? Mostly I noticed the way they dress. With other instruments it is not like that. I wonder how that happens.
Mhmm I'm on the autism spectrum so I can have a quiet chuckle at all the uh mhmms. That being said she comes across as a great teacher/player and probably raises a good point about playing with flesh and nail mhmmmm.
His lexicon is brilliant!
Being a guitar teacher myself, hearing the student say "mhm" is actually a lot more common than you think lol.
Lol if you teach in the USA, I believe you. Americans say mhm to everything

I absolutely. This is gold!

I couldn't take the video serious, I was laughing too hard at "mhm".

All I can say is that it takes balls to sit up there and play anything in front of her.
All this time I've been playing the A finger the wrong way and I'm so glad I found this vid. Thank you.

Fascinating - her attention to details which gives such PRESCISION in her playing.
Great tip about the a finger, thanks for uploading
🤯 now I get to play with the left or right side of the nail, it does make a difference, Thank you Ana Vidovic much love
There are no small things when it comes to playing classical technique, great information here, thanks for the video.

Whoo :P
1:17 Ana: "Is this the usual length you play with?"
Student: "yes".
Lmao, at least he's honest there, and that stopped him saying "mhm" for a moment.
I think no one catches the genius of your joke!
Excellent and very informative. Thank you so much.

Brilliant suggestions! Thanks for uploading!
Both flesh and nail, got it.
mhm
flesh...flesh mhm
bone is actually the best for a clear sound
I’ve been using the flesh & nail technique for most of my classical guitar playing career. You get the best of both worlds

in my humble opinion Ana is spot on about nail technique..it seems to be a thing these days growing one`s nails long
her voice ❤❤❤
Very much appreciated.
I learned something useful! Thank you!
and yet - "the nail and flesh " explains all the philosophy on nail size that I wont have to research on .. many thanks for that advice
Wow....averla come maestra sarebbe meraviglioso.
This is great! Love Ana. Can anyone please tell me the name of the piece of music that she starts to play? Tia
Hey Ana ! A bright sound. I wonder what kind of strings are best for that ?

Good info about nail sound and evening out the sound...mmmhm.
she grilled him!!! poor guy probably cried when he got home ahahaha xD
At no point did she grill him. Shes is a teacher and as a teacher she must give advice, which she did in the mosy educative and comprehensive way.
He sounded and acted like a virgin...I imagine he probably knocked one out

Poor guy being roasted alive for saying mmm.
So what was your nails' length before? And did you shorten them after that? How much? Did it really help?
Give us some conclusion.
Great advice on techniques by the most beautiful player.
@David Mejía it's cello suit prelude by bach I believe

She is superb . although I would assume the fretboard technique is the most important rather than the "finger picking" hand imho .
To be honest I would say mhhm every 2 seconds too, being in front of such a great teacher.
Mhm is fine. He is absorbing, keeping response brief so as not to interrupt.
1:19 yes.
Listen to her, she is great.
She's so right, nail size should not be too long. Also, it helps not looking like a freak.

2:05 please, what´s the name of the song?
Bach's Cello Suite No1
thanks!
I think originally in G, but usually played in D on guitar.
What's the name of the music that she played?
John Williams had a perpendicular R.H to the strings,no-one would disagree that he had the right tone!
Some at right angles like Anna, some at more square like John Williams.,depends what you find more stable.
She should be telling him to bend his wrist and play off the right side of the nail. There’s no problem with the a finger in this position.
Is it possible to find the full masterclass somewhere??? :)
morten andre larsen hi, we will upload parts of the masterclass. best wishes
Does anybody know what tune she is playing when showing the nail-meat technic?
Bach I believe, but unable to name its title.
What is the name of the Piece at 2:05??
