I'm a bit nervous to share this and put it out there. I poured EVERYTHING into this, and it was only when I recently went through it that all of it came rushing back. None of my friends or family knew that I had this 'bargain with myself' or the importance of this folio. I never told anyone about it incase I didn't make it. I think I was just afraid of people knowing if I had failed at something I set out to do. To all who are currently crunching finals and working on folios, good luck and I hope you find this somewhat useful! #brbchasingdreams

I have the same fear: afraid of people knowing I failed. It's hard to overcome people opinions in life. Don't know why I'm a bit shedding tears while writing this. Facing our fears is so hard. Thank you for inspiring me and helping me to be faithful in myself. Maybe both successes and failures are essential for us to grow. It's still tough. But I’m trying.

I had this heavy regret like my whole life was now altered and everyone was saying that I made a stupid mistake. But I also feel free and happier and art does something for your soul that science can't. I hope I can look back and say I made the right choice but your comment has inspired me because art is worth it.

Skippable comment (trust me, it's kinda sad)
Wish I could say the same. I'd be lying if I say I'm not looking for a courae that'll give me enough money that I need. I started drawing since I was 4 years old and then improved throughout the next 13 years of my life. Sadly, I can't take a Fine Arts degree or anything that majors on art since I'm somewhat like the breadwinner of the family and therefore pursue a much more "logical" course instead to help my parents and help pay my younger sibling's tuitiom fees. I AM interested and fascinated of courses such as medicine and architecture. I'd probably take the Doctor route (as nearly ever Asian parent wants their child to take), it's gonna be stressful and tiresome and all that yada yada but hopefully, I'll be able to work in the medical field. If I actually pursue this course, I'll do my best to never forget my love for the arts. Maybe someday I'll be able to take an art degree or class, just... not today.

    Hello Hieu!
I have no idea if you will read this but I just wanted to share how thankful I am that I came across your channel a couple years ago. I have been following your journey and it has sparked something in me that I don't think I would have ever acknowledged unless I saw your work. I was in touch with my artistic side for years. I pursued an associate's degree in graphic design during my junior college years and I was also a musical theater major for a very long time. I decided to give up on those pursuits because truthfully both of them were not feasible for me financially at the time. I had to put myself through college on my own, work 2 restaurant jobs and complete a degree. I decided to choose something more practical and go for a communications degree instead. I found a job in the communications field and realized that I wasn't entirely happy with it. The aspects that made me like it was related to social media and graphic design. Because of your channel and also because of the loss of my dear Music mentor, Pro Mojica, this 30-year-old woman (me) has decided to follow her heart and do a 180-degree turn to live and breathe art like how I was supposed to in the first place. Your channel has inspired me tremendously; I am extremely grateful for you. This video is bringing tears to my eyes as I write all of this. Seeing your beginnings and your process is quite an honor. Thank you for doing what you do. I will do my best to make it to your exhibit in Los Angeles in December.

    Hieu,
I just wanted to say thank you. For allowing me to feel motivated again. I too am pursuing an art subject and it’s been the biggest weight I’ve carried with me for three years now. Each page I had to fill in my sketchbook felt like a chore and it seemed like my love for doing art was stripped away by the thought of doing it for a grade. So I rebelled and procrastinated my artwork, I didn’t see the point of it yet I still came out with surprising grades. It is now really hard to get top marks for both your final piece and sketchbook but I’m willing to try my hardest. I’d also like to add that you are documented throughout my sketchbooks as my main source of inspiration and artist research. Thank you!! I needed this video.

I just wanted to say thanks to you for doing this video. I take art at school in Australia and I was really lost when we got the task to create a visual art diary (which is this but with a slightly different name) because I had never done something like it before. My first semester diary wasn't great and I got really low marks for it, so decided to look online for a guide or for ways to improve and your video was literally the only thing I could find. After watching it I realised that I had been going about it the wrong way, these types of folios aren't just about documentation and research, they're essentially a written artwork to demonstrate your understanding and explain your thoughts and choices. Once I started thinking about it like that and putting a little more effort into the right things, I had something I was really proud of, regardless of what grade it got. Long story short I ended up with highest grade in my school for it and I wouldn't have been able to do it unless I watched this video, so thankyou. ☺️

I want to borrow ideas you used to explore what inspires you and how you documented your journey of exploring art materials and techniques to discover what worked. I am trying to figure out my own art goals. This is a wonderful example of how to develop your own art style - the best I have seen. Much of you folio has “mood boards” which many artists use. Excellent organized but also creative method for developing yourself as an artist. It is no wonder you were successful because you have talent but developed your talent with a lot of hard work and “focus” on what inspired you. I love you style of nature and portrait. Beautiful. So happy for you. Your folio is like a class on how to develop your art style. Could be a book.

I finished a Visual Arts program which allowed me to be creative and learned that I do love making art . But after it was done I was feeling the same way I felt back then and my uneasiness came back. I began questioning myself and wondered if its still ok to go down this path. Seeing your efforts and enjoyment with making art reminded me that thats how I want to feel and continue to learn and grow with. I really enjoy looking at your art and realized I gave up too fast: therefore, I want to try again and become as talented as you are. Thank you for making this video XD And keep creating!

This is so awesome. I did VCE Studio Art in 2017 and I was so disappointed with my folio by the end I just left it in the art class room 😂
Since finishing high school though I’ve tried to go to the Top Arts exhibition every year. It’s so inspiring, even now that I’m doing a non-art-related course.
    Thank you for sharing this!

i knw i am veryy late but i just wanted to say , after seeing ur art portfolio i decided i shud really try my best to actually "study" art. i have been drawing ever since i can remember and last year i went to grade nine where i have to choose what i want to study further . art was one of the options but i didnt take it . i dont knw why i didnt take art class but i sure do regret it . ik a lot of ppl say its a waste but in my case i cud've studied it for free but i still didnt take the chance. i was so demotivated but after i saw this i decided that i shudnt give up and keep on learning art by myself. now i look at professional artists and study what they do and i keep doing my best to improve. ik it is already too late to go back and choose arts since i am in my last year , but i have to say i dont regret it as much as i did before cause i am still learning new things either way.

This video scares me so much. Not just because of how much effort and dedication is in this folio, but also because what your thoughts are and everything you've said resonates with me so deeply! Art was immediately off the list of options, I even wrote why as my English essay folio. Seeing this has now made me wonder what my future will become.

Bravo!!!! Man you inspired me...I am an artist myself...like u said I do digital art as we can undo things whenever we want....i didnt have the courage to work on any traditional methods...All my paintings are good...I used to copy the exact photograph and then add a few elements of myown in my work(not tracing)....but I always knew something is missing....Now I understand what I miss is knowledge...EVEN THOUGH I HAVE IDEAS I DONT KNOW HOW TO MAKE THEM PAINTINGS WHITHOUT REFERENCES....FROM YOUR VIDEOS I UNDERSTOOD I NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ART AND THEN EXPERIMENT WITH IT JUST LIKE A SCIENTIST....THANK YOU SO MUCH.....

This makes me feel a lot better about the process. My art was only a few levels below yours at that time and I'm only just now starting to get to the point where I don't hate the work I'm making and don't care about making money anymore. I just want to be the best artist I can be by dedicating my time and attention to it in the obsessive way that you have.

I really wish my highschool had a developed art program. I had to give up on being an illustrator as a career path because our art class consisted of "writing down quotes of the day" and "no shading in sketches". I learned nothing and thus couldn't develop my skills. I'm so jealous you learned such high level skills in high school!

You probably won’t see this but I’m so shocked. I live in Australia and am currently working on MY year 12 folio for studio arts. I just happened to be looking for some inspo when I clicked this video. I’ve followed you on Instagram for a while, and had no idea you were from Australia! What blew my mind even more was that your theme is the same one I chose! ‘Connectedness’, but in particular, people’s connectedness to nature. I’m hoping to also get into top arts, so crazy how similar our stories are 😆 Hope you have a nice day!! 🤗

It's one of the coolest things to see inside the mind of one of my favorite artists, especially things like where they get their inspiration from and their backstories and processes...this video was amazing. Your portfolio really has me speechless, looking at it was like....insane LOL in a good way!!! It's very justified that you put everything into this, and I'm thankful that it got the recognition it deserved. The way an artist's job is portrayed to society can be a very disheartening thing, and it's true that it seems almost impossible to go through with at first. But I'm really glad that you were able to persevere through it all. I find that not only your art but also your heartwarming personality and extreme work ethic is something that inspires me greatly. Thank you for sharing this experience with us!

I hates the sciences but it got me in to physiotherapy school. I finally get why nowadays there's a page limit for CIE art and design...
I took graphics last year and I enjoyed drawings and paintings so much, but I dropped it this year because I thought it was too idealistic for me to become an artist, as I got an A last year where I was expecting an A* since I spend all my free time on the projects. I like to study science as well, but I would never be able to get excited about it as I did with my art. I know maybe I should 'chase my dream', but I don't what to take risks... Nevertheless, I can still keep it as a hobby and draw whenever I feel like it, and I feel so happy for you to get to do the things you truly passionate about! You're my favourite artist and your art influenced me A LOT (indigo becomes my favourite colour to use)!
