I'm a bit nervous to share this and put it out there. I poured EVERYTHING into this, and it was only when I recently went through it that all of it came rushing back. None of my friends or family knew that I had this 'bargain with myself' or the importance of this folio. I never told anyone about it incase I didn't make it. I think I was just afraid of people knowing if I had failed at something I set out to do. To all who are currently crunching finals and working on folios, good luck and I hope you find this somewhat useful! #brbchasingdreams

I have the same fear: afraid of people knowing I failed. It's hard to overcome people opinions in life. Don't know why I'm a bit shedding tears while writing this. Facing our fears is so hard. Thank you for inspiring me and helping me to be faithful in myself. Maybe both successes and failures are essential for us to grow. It's still tough. But I’m trying.

I wish I had a class like that when I was in high school. My art teachers just gave us an assignment and sat at their desks. I was also told pursuing art would make me end up jobless and homeless....

I felt pressured and felt like I had the need to be in courses with “real jobs”. I entered university with nursing as my course and shifted to advertising arts a year later. I’ve never been happier!!

Thank you for this comment. I dropped physics and chemistry two days ago to focus on persuing art even though I was doing well in them but I just don't have a passion for science. I had this heavy regret like my whole life was now altered and everyone was saying that I made a stupid mistake. But I also feel free and happier and art does something for your soul that science can't. I hope I can look back and say I made the right choice but your comment has inspired me because art is worth it.

Skippable comment (trust me, it's kinda sad)
Wish I could say the same. I'd be lying if I say I'm not looking for a courae that'll give me enough money that I need. I started drawing since I was 4 years old and then improved throughout the next 13 years of my life. Sadly, I can't take a Fine Arts degree or anything that majors on art since I'm somewhat like the breadwinner of the family and therefore pursue a much more "logical" course instead to help my parents and help pay my younger sibling's tuitiom fees. I AM interested and fascinated of courses such as medicine and architecture. I'd probably take the Doctor route (as nearly ever Asian parent wants their child to take), it's gonna be stressful and tiresome and all that yada yada but hopefully, I'll be able to work in the medical field. If I actually pursue this course, I'll do my best to never forget my love for the arts. Maybe someday I'll be able to take an art degree or class, just... not today.

    Hello Hieu!
I have no idea if you will read this but I just wanted to share how thankful I am that I came across your channel a couple years ago. I have been following your journey and it has sparked something in me that I don't think I would have ever acknowledged unless I saw your work. I was in touch with my artistic side for years. I pursued an associate's degree in graphic design during my junior college years and I was also a musical theater major for a very long time. I decided to give up on those pursuits because truthfully both of them were not feasible for me financially at the time. I had to put myself through college on my own, work 2 restaurant jobs and complete a degree. I decided to choose something more practical and go for a communications degree instead. I found a job in the communications field and realized that I wasn't entirely happy with it. The aspects that made me like it was related to social media and graphic design. Because of your channel and also because of the loss of my dear Music mentor, Pro Mojica, this 30-year-old woman (me) has decided to follow her heart and do a 180-degree turn to live and breathe art like how I was supposed to in the first place. Your channel has inspired me tremendously; I am extremely grateful for you. This video is bringing tears to my eyes as I write all of this. Seeing your beginnings and your process is quite an honor. Thank you for doing what you do. I will do my best to make it to your exhibit in Los Angeles in December.

    Hieu,
I just wanted to say thank you. For allowing me to feel motivated again. I too am pursuing an art subject and it’s been the biggest weight I’ve carried with me for three years now. Each page I had to fill in my sketchbook felt like a chore and it seemed like my love for doing art was stripped away by the thought of doing it for a grade. So I rebelled and procrastinated my artwork, I didn’t see the point of it yet I still came out with surprising grades. It is now really hard to get top marks for both your final piece and sketchbook but I’m willing to try my hardest. I’d also like to add that you are documented throughout my sketchbooks as my main source of inspiration and artist research. Thank you!! I needed this video.

MANY of my peers had never illustrated or really even sketched before these classes. You can do it, even if you can’t be the top you’ll still have your own unique value and character that makes your art your own. Chase that, enjoy the process of learning new things and keep telling yourself “maybe I can get better.” Having that little bit of hope in you will spark so much more growth.

And I’m stressing out because I only have 2 years of high school left and then college and I’m afraid I’m not going to be good enough to get into a good collage or even one at all. Like what books or techniques, videos to get this good and what can I do to least get better on the faces and proportion and drawing in general. Also to not rush and take my time because.

My advice: pick something you suck at, and reproduce it multiple times in different media, colours/monochrome, etc. Once you master one piece, it's easier to build more pieces onto it. What Hieu's portfolio demonstrates, is how he observed and practised different elements before putting them together in a final work. He studied eyes, ears, different face angles, etc, before selecting a style and materials. If you type "how to draw better", in the search box, a bunch of videos will help you. Good luck. :)

Inspirational. Thank you for sharing your learning process. I want to borrow ideas you used to explore what inspires you and how you documented your journey of exploring art materials and techniques to discover what worked. I am trying to figure out my own art goals. This is a wonderful example of how to develop your own art style - the best I have seen. Much of you folio has “mood boards” which many artists use. Excellent organized but also creative method for developing yourself as an artist. It is no wonder you were successful because you have talent but developed your talent with a lot of hard work and “focus” on what inspired you. I love you style of nature and portrait. Beautiful. So happy for you. Your folio is like a class on how to develop your art style. Could be a book.

I finally get why nowadays there's a page limit for CIE art and design...
I took graphics last year and I enjoyed drawings and paintings so much, but I dropped it this year because I thought it was too idealistic for me to become an artist, as I got an A last year where I was expecting an A* since I spend all my free time on the projects. I like to study science as well, but I would never be able to get excited about it as I did with my art. I know maybe I should 'chase my dream', but I don't what to take risks... Nevertheless, I can still keep it as a hobby and draw whenever I feel like it, and I feel so happy for you to get to do the things you truly passionate about! You're my favourite artist and your art influenced me A LOT (indigo becomes my favourite colour to use)!

Bravo!!!! Man you inspired me...I am an artist myself...like u said I do digital art as we can undo things whenever we want....i didnt have the courage to work on any traditional methods...All my paintings are good...I used to copy the exact photograph and then add a few elements of myown in my work(not tracing)....but I always knew something is missing....Now I understand what I miss is knowledge...EVEN THOUGH I HAVE IDEAS I DONT KNOW HOW TO MAKE THEM PAINTINGS WHITHOUT REFERENCES....FROM YOUR VIDEOS I UNDERSTOOD I NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ART AND THEN EXPERIMENT WITH IT JUST LIKE A SCIENTIST....THANK YOU SO MUCH.....

I really wish my highschool had a developed art program. I had to give up on being an illustrator as a career path because our art class consisted of "writing down quotes of the day" and "no shading in sketches". I learned nothing and thus couldn't develop my skills. I'm so jealous you learned such high level skills in high school!

Jeez this inspires me but at the same time makes me sad because I know I’ve never been this passionate about anything in my life and don’t know if I ever will. Maybe I haven’t found that thing yet, or maybe I’m just destined to be a below average citizen with nothing but their job and their broken dreams. I don’t want that but I feel like nothing in this world is for me. I love art, but I’ve always been terrified of new things and easily frustrated. When I try to get into something whether it be coding, spanish, digital art, exercise, 3D modeling, animation, or anything else, I just can’t push myself to do it. Where could someone like me possibly get determination when nothing feels like it’s calling out to me? How am I having a midlife crisis when I’m not even there yet? I dunno. I make myself sad. Right now I’m looking at my uncompleted homework that’s due tomorrow. I don’t even have the determination to do a class I signed up for. I wish I had something other than decent art and good grades. Something that’d get me somewhere. Money, looks, personality, intelligence, language, talent, dedication, voice, a desire. Your art is beautiful. Thank you for telling us your amazing story.

I just wanted to say thanks to you for doing this video. I take art at school in Australia and I was really lost when we got the task to create a visual art diary (which is this but with a slightly different name) because I had never done something like it before. My first semester diary wasn't great and I got really low marks for it, so decided to look online for a guide or for ways to improve and your video was literally the only thing I could find. After watching it I realised that I had been going about it the wrong way, these types of folios aren't just about documentation and research, they're essentially a written artwork to demonstrate your understanding and explain your thoughts and choices. Once I started thinking about it like that and putting a little more effort into the right things, I had something I was really proud of, regardless of what grade it got. Long story short I ended up with highest grade in my school for it and I wouldn't have been able to do it unless I watched this video, so thankyou. ☺️

i knw i am veryy late but i just wanted to say , after seeing ur art portfolio i decided i shud really try my best to actually "study" art. i have been drawing ever since i can remember and last year i went to grade nine where i have to choose what i want to study further . art was one of the options but i didnt take it . i dont knw why i didnt take art class but i sure do regret it . ik a lot of ppl say its a waste but in my case i cud've studied it for free but i still didnt take the chance. i was so demotivated but after i saw this i decided that i shudnt give up and keep on learning art by myself. now i look at professional artists and study what they do and i keep doing my best to improve. ik it is already too late to go back and choose arts since i am in my last year , but i have to say i dont regret it as much as i did before cause i am still learning new things either way.

I'm 39 years old turning 40 this December... and I regret ever giving up on my abilities in art. I used to draw like crazy when I was a kid, but my parents kept telling me that art was just a hobby and not an option for a career. I'm so happy for you. You fought for your art and now look at what you've achieved.

Thank you so much for uploading this , seeing how much work you put into this and how it paid off is extremely inspirational!
I'm currently taking a gap year after having finished my Bachelor, knowing deep down I'd prefer to make art my job above anything else. But I've never taken art classes, and I'm not sure if I can make it. At the end of the day, art still is a very uncertain future, and I'm constantly wondering if I'm not better off looking for a Master's and getting a job. The "safe" way. But maybe I should take the leap, make the most of this gap year and the excess student loan I put aside these past three years, and just like you, give it my all this year. Self study, online classes, exploration, I don't know, but all for a little spark of hope that maybe my art can mean something one day.
So thanks again for the inspirational video! ❤️ (I feel like the hashtag #brbchasingdreams is indeed appropriate here)
Btw, your portfolio is stunning :)

im not crying :'[ as a fellow artist, i've heard mixed reactions about my career choice. art is my escape, my fantasy world. no one would take that away from me. i work hard to keep my love alive and try my best to create when i truly want to(to not overwhelm, exhaust my mental state). I'm an art student at University. i always knew illustration of some kind would be my life, i still do. my passion to create burns steady and seeing this just makes me want to finish strong for my last two-three years. I want to be in galleries, creating children's books. but this here made me want to start it all via RUclips. i want to make a channel. a new flame is burning and artists like you on here makes me want to join yall.
