  • We had been overseas for a awhile without our bikes, and we were very excited to be home and planning our next biking trip. We love both hiking and biking equally, but when one starts to outweigh the other, such as when we go overseas and can't bring our wheels, we truly miss the other. Varying activities also helps with your joints and not putting too much strain on any one area. If you alternate bike/hike/bike/hike, it is much easier on your body. You'll thank your current self later! We are not nighttime riders, although we have been caught before, so with the summer solstice upon us, and the longest day of the year, we decided to take a longer drive to a trail a bit farther away. In retrospect, we should have just stayed overnight, but, we had been away from home for a bit from our last trip, and our family was not keen on seeing us leave again so soon. So a day trip it was! We did fit it all in...even an excellent, local dinner, but it was a difficult drive home. We have a spreadsheet or wish list of all the biking and hiking trails we want to see. The Kokosing Gap Trail, beginning in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, was on that list. Kokosing is a 14 mile section of the (not all completed) 326 mile trek of the Ohio to Erie Trail system. My husband has been wanting to do a cross-country bike ride with me, but I am just not up for tent camping as of yet. Maybe someday. For now, cabins are about as rustic as I am able to get. If you have watched any of my other trail videos, you will have noticed, that with very, very few exceptions, the trail I am currently on is my absolute favorite, and the Kokosing was no exception. I suppose when you have never been to a location and you are seeing it for the first time, everything is just new and exciting, therefore, the best thing ever! #retireearlyandtravel #retireearly #retirement #lectric #veteransherman #ebike #ebikes #nature #naturelovers #trail #trails #forest #lake #trees #river #family #sweethearts #foreverlove #bikeride #bikerides #bikeriders #bikelife #cycling #ride #electricbike #railstotrails #stateparks #nationalpark #adventurer #ohio
    Length:
From Mt. Vernon to Danville, Oh it is 14 miles. There is a connecting trail in Danville called the Mohican Valley Trail which we also did. One thing I missed was the dog fountain in the actual town on Mt. Vernon. We just ran out of time and I probably should have went to see it first, but I just couldn't wait to get on the trail and by the time we got back, it was really too late.

    Facilities:
Water fountains, bicycle Fixit stations and restrooms are available on the trail in Mount Vernon, Gambier, Howard and Danville. There are also picnic benches and/or tables about every half mile.

    Trail condition:
The trail is in excellent condition. Horses are not allowed on this section (unlike the Mohican Valley Section), so the paved trail is clean and fun to ride. There are a few tree root pops, but it is obvious the trail is well loved and cared for by the locals. The majority of the trail is tree lined, so it stays a good 10 degrees cooler on hot days. There are some open, hot sections with corn and soybean fields on each side, but they are fairly small areas. The Kokosing river is the highlight of the ride. Having it along side the trail is beautiful at every turn.
It is always a good idea to check alerts on the Ohio to Erie website for any closures before you head out for the day. The link to trail alerts is below:

    Food:
Both Mt. Vernon and Danville, have grab and go, groceries, and sit-down restaurants to eat at. We ate at the Southside Diner, in Mt. Vernon. It was fantastic! Delicious food, service and atmosphere. The prices were very reasonable and although the parking lot is a bit small, the restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside. I especially loved their onion rings and their caramel cheesecake.

I was wondering the same thing. It is obvious it is historical, but what was it along the trail rail in days gone by. Cute house now none the less!
