The problem with these games is we cant shake the feeling we were shortchanged. Instead of getting a HGSS style reimagining of Sinnoh with all of the original content plus all of the gen 8 mechanics and pokemon and graphics that pushed the latest system, we got the old mechanics with the old pokemon and missing content from the original.
Being faithful doesnt make BDSP bad, but when remakes have been used as an opportunity to reimagine an old region to conform to the latest generation of pokemon, getting sinnoh remakes that are stuck in gen 4 feels like a wasted opportunity.

I liked how they did it in gen 5 where if you went off the beaten path you found the good some of the best TM's like flamethrower. I think that's better than just going back to the stupid breakable TM's there's no reason to have them like that when HM's don't break

Honestly I think crafting is the best, adding a barrier between stuff is cool. I just wish it made exploring more fun like tms do.
Also I do prefer the decision making of will I keep this pokemon and should I give them this?? It also makes the pokemon you put it on more special and back in the day talking to friends about how you could put flamethrower on slowpoke was so exciting and almost felt like I was cheating. Yet no one else could because it was on a obvious choice. Now finding stuff like that isn't special partially due to youtube and partially due to tms now feeling special.
Hms are needed to beat the game (mostly) so they should be overly useable but just fine options like waterfall and not as good as early games surf. Surf kyogre was dumb.

    • @mightza3781
      @mightza3781 Год назад +7

The easiest solution would just have all TMs available in a post game shop if the game is balanced around sprinkles of powerful early limited use TMs. Another way to add immersion of being an actual Pokemon trainer would be having the player character being a move tutor for their own Pokemon whose list of teachable moves expands as you collect badges and fill out the Pokedex. Catch X amount of different fire types and have the fire type badge to be able to teach flamethrower without a TM.

We wanted HG/SS. A game that re-treads the original beats of the originals, while adding additional features and functions. Postgame legend hunting, incorporation of elements from Crystal, the completely new and novel customizable Safari Zone,
We wanted OR/AS. A game that allows us to explore a familiar region with a new twist. Further elaboration on Megas (coupled with more individuals making use of Megas in the game than in XY), the new mechanic of the Eon Flute, the added story of the Delta Episode - acknowledging Emerald without compromising the original identity of the games, and creating a completely new and quite liked character in Zinnia in the process.
This is what I was wanting in BD/SP. I wanted to see Sinnoh through a new light - iron out a lot of the more performance-related things, add a Delta Episode for Giratina, couple new things and maybe some new way to experience the region. While I would have appreciated something like new Megas, as well, it wasn't something I was particularly counting on, and I didn't expect Dynamax to leave Galar (and it wouldn't have fit Sinnoh even if it did). But... this wasn't it. This wasn't anything "new." The only thing that could even maybe fit that bill was the postgame area where you find all the Legendaries - and even that sort of falls flat compared to hunting for Legendaries in OR/AS or HG/SS, because there's no hunt - they're just there.

I know people wanted HGSS/ORAS levels of remakes, but I think these did that but the "flaws" people seen held most from enjoying the games or publicly saying they enjoyed the games. To me personally, BDSP fails as a remake because there is really no reason to play this remake over Platinum. If you want to compare it to the original diamond and pearl then yeah it is a perfectly fine remake, but that is such a lame argument. That would be like if they remade Gold and Silver again but removed all of the content from Heartgold and SoulSilver, the framework was made and loved over 10+ years prior.
We can argue all day about how the new generations of pokemon are/aren't as quality as the old gens. But when a remake where all of the most difficult aspects of it were already completed over a decade beforehand, I just can't be as forgiving.
This isn't even a "every previous remake brought that game up to the standards of the current generation so why couldn't this one do it to" type of argument. I was fully expecting the remakes to not be on the scale of Sword/Shield, but damn TPC gave ILCA no chance of making a remake worth a damn

Gameplay wise, Emerald didn't really add much that was significant before post-game aside from Magma Hideout due to its story having you go against both Team Magma and Aqua, but that's because they story for Emerald is more different from Ruby and Sapphire. That new specific location is not need if for the main game if you're gonna follow Ruby and Sapphire's story.
Is what Pokemon did to incorporate Emerald into ORAS ideal in the end? Probably like 50/50 give or take. However, ORAS still incorporated Emerald's Rayquaza-centric story in some way (even if it's a post-game story), and it's more agreed upon that it's better than BDSP not incorporating any Platinum stuff (which, for the record, added some actual QoL stuff in its gameplay)

I'm in the minority but having never played gen 4 back in the day BDSP was a fun playthrough especially the elite 4 and Cynthia. I dont think Ive ever had so much fun batlling NPC'S. I didn't mind the chibi style as gen 4 sprites in the overworld were short and stocky so it didnt look too out of the ordinary. Thats not to excuse the amount of missed potential with remakes that dont even include everything that generation had to offer (Platinum's Additions). Im just hoping that if they take on a gen 5 remake that they go that extra step instead of playing it as safe as possible especially now that theyve had a crack at a remake.

"Faithful" was a sales pitch. Ultimately, the game came out completely different from the base game as it introduced modern Pokémon elements not present in the original:
      - forced exp share,
      - fairy typing,
      - friendship mechanics,
      - updated movepool,
      - consistency changes like removing the human/Pokémon marriage lore books.
Mario RPG fits the "faithful" title because it focuses on maintaining the same experience, BD/SP does not, it expects you to experience DP differently.

    The Exp. Share problem:
    - In generation 1 to 4, the XP is flat and not shared. It incites you to put all your XP in the same Pokémon. If a play-through rewards you 350,000 XP, you either have 1 Pokémon level 70 (destroys everything), 2 at level 55 (can do most without facing issue), or 6 at level 40 (everything is hard). Due to this, they cannot propose "hard" battle: if you are countered by a Pokémon, you will need to grind a new Pokémon to help you out. Grinding is not fun, not even rewarding.
    - In generation 5, the XP is scaled and not shared. The games prevent you to over-level, yet don't really helps to have a balanced team without grind. They needed to implement Audino to alleviate the need of grind. Plus: it made leveling to 100 a chore (as the scaling prevent overleveling).
    - In generation 6, the XP is flat and shared. They also added XP on catch (on a 450 Pokémon Pokédex). Overleveling isn't prevented anymore, so it was Generation 1 to 4 effect on all Pokémon at once. But with a balanced team, Gamefreak can propose hard battle.
    - In generation 7 onward, the XP is scaled and shared. It took both Generation 5 and 6 mechanic. 6's mechanic allows to have a balanced team and to propose hard battles as consequences. 5's mechanic allows the player to not overlevel and snowball on the content. Yet, leveling to 100 is hard. Thus the candies in Dens starting in generation 8.
I wonder how XY would be experienced be if it had scaled XP from 7. Would it be a challenge or more fun?

    • @scrittle
      @scrittle Год назад

Gen 8 botched candies by offering them too early, most players farmed candies in dens instead of wild Pokémon because it was quicker. The levelling system has improved considerably, but there are two noticeable problems:
      1) weak, low exp rq Pokémon who need overlevelling simply cannot, as a result Pokémon choice is limited to AVG 460-600 BST,
      2) poor implementation or lack of utilisation is a major theme, Ultra Necrozma is the heart of your argument and we haven't had a difficult fight like that since...well, Ultra Necrozma. Pokémon is too focused making trainers as easy as they always have.
Gen 5 was honestly the hardest Pokémon has ever gotten from exp mechanics, forcing the player to think and learn. B2W2's bug gym leader WAS NO JOKE! Same for X&Y's bug gym (since exp share wasn't available until after beating them).

If you could choose which material they are made of like gold, metal or gems that you found in the underground maze; that would be cool! Nope, you can't! No place for creativity and fun here ☹

BDSP were actually decent, definitely not amazing but far from terrible. They accomplished exactly what they were meant to and were perfectly playable. In fact, I'd even argue that I personally would rather have the remakes over the originals (Platinum is still far better than both though, and if they had just included the extra content from it I doubt people's opinions would have been as negative as they are). That said, I understand most of the frustration but I don't consider these games to be the worst by any stretch and I would accept more remakes in their style as long as they don't completely ignore the third versions.
Also I don't believe most people actually remember how flawed some parts of Sinnoh's design was (lack of fire types being the biggest problem but not the only one,) and I say that as someone who started the franchise with the originals.

Diamond was my first ever Pokémon game, so Sinnoh will always hold a special place in my heart. Since playing Diamond, I have played every single Pokémon release since then, and have played all of the releases on the gameboy. These remakes didn’t do enough for me to play them over the original games, even though they were faster and fixed the HM issues. The look of the game is ok, not really my favorite style, but I can see why some people really like it. I also liked the additional challenge that the gym leaders and Elite 4 offered, and Cynthia was as good as ever. Despite those changes, the rest of the game plays the exact same. There were no special battle mechanics, no additions to the story, and your character was completely lifeless. I liked Ramadas Park, though the digging for those stones to unlock rooms was kinda dumb in my opinion. Overall, it’s not a great game by any means, but I do think it gets a little too much flack. I think the player should be forced to be under leveled compared to boss trainers while playing the story. The game should be teaching strategy.
People may think being 10, 15 maybe even 20 levels under may be too much, but we have infinite items uses, affinity and other things to even the field.

I have zero trust in gamefreak. Absolutely none. So the fact ILCA added ANYTHING to BDSP was an absolute crazy thing for me. Because truthfully im very happy its a near strict faithful remake. Thats the only way to guarantee they wont mess anything up.
My only complaints of these games is i wish they would used the in battle models over chibi models. I dont mind them but the in battle models are just so good. And the other problem is disabling exp share.

I'm nowhere near as critical as others on HMs. I just accepted that they were part of the games and now that they're gone... I miss them. I even artificially enforced a rule on myself in this game that I had to have the move on my Pokémon to use them.
