Neil Peart of Rush was a DCFC fan. He included the studio version of this song as part of the "walk-in” mixtape during their Clockwork Angels tour in 2013. Neil had been making these mixtapes for Rush audiences since the late ‘70s. It was a job he deemed too important to leave up to the sound techs. RIP Neil.
Wow, I didn't know that. Death Cab's drummer Jason McGerr was in the Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage documentary as one of the many musician fans of the band (and especially Neil), but knowing that Neil reciprocated the appreciation is awesome as I'm a fan of both groups.
I love when Death Cab put a little grit on it. Their softer stuff is great too but they have a way of making the "musically aggressive" still seem pretty darn refined.
Yep. Transatlanticism is my favorite. It came out when I was in college. I had my first real relationship, and I was absolutely love drunk. I was in college in the mountains of Virginia, and she lived in Virginia Beach, about a 5-6 hour drive, but I'd still do it just to see her for a day. When it ended a few years later, this song always reminds me of that first actual relationship. Haven't seen her since 2007. I think about her every now and then. I hope she's doing well.
I like this version. On headphones, you can hear the separation of the two guitar parts during the main riff. On the studio recording, they are so well blended, it's hard to hear where one guitar starts and the other ends.
First off, what a mind-blowingly awesome arrangement of We Looked Like Giants. Holy shit. Second, it was sad news for the indie world when DCFC signed to Atlantic, but I think it's actually helped make larger audiences aware that there is a whole lot of music outside the mainstream. Post-Barsuk DCFC definitely opened my eyes to the local Northwest sound.
Your words just shattered me Ben. There is a Ryhe lyric that talks about love burning bright and burning fast. Young love is a lot to swallow when you look back as an adult. We definitely looked and felt like giants. Not so much anymore. "Life hadn't really started yet." F
Everyone in the comments acting like Ben isn’t a modern day poet that just happens to be a lead singer for a successful band. Tbh, Ben’s lyrics are beautiful and resonate so well to those of us who are introverts, I would be a-okay letting history mark him down as a 21st century poet. Just amazing music all around.
@ Lilia Diaz: Lol, like every guy, when he's reminiscing about the first girl he had sex with, mentions a college textbook. It is about the Jesus and Mary Chain, Ben has said so.
Ben's playing a GNL, they make these strat types with tele necks/headstocks. The whole band has been using them for some time, although I think that he uses the tele version more prominently now a these days.
Great stuff :) I've been meaning to get a copy of drive well sleep carefully for a while now. on the DVD, is there a way to turn off the commentary? and just have the music intact?
I love the fact that DCFC seems more concerned with topping what they did last time, instead of simply relying on label input for future projects. That's the kind of thing that's killed the buzz I've had for so many bands in the past.
I miss Ben Gibbard being chubby, I know he's still the same person, but the way he carries himself now is a little different. I'd kill you all to be here at this video.
I don’t understand why people keep saying that they switched instruments i did not know that Nick was playing the keyboards?Mr Walla simply handed him his bass than proceeded to make some of the most amazing sounds on the keyboard
actually i don't think it's a strat. look at the headstock. death cab doesn't play lots of real fenders from what i can tell. fenders are the most copied guitars out there so there are tons of other brands that look just like them. i know nick's current bass looks just like a p-bass but it's not. same with most of ben's guitars. if anyone knows what type of guitars they play currently or how they're modified i'm really interested.
17 yrs... gods has it rlly been so long..
I still remember you and this song Olivia...

@@lorenwyman I saw that movie. I was glad to see a hometown dude (I'm from Seattle) in it.

Death Cab for Cuties strongest album imo, this live version is great!

I noticed that too
This is seriously the best 10 minutes on the internet.

I like the way he says "through every pane of weathered glass"
This has got to be my most favorite song from DCFC!!!!!!

The sugary smell of spring time
Watching this version of this song at Glasgow Barrowland in 2006 will always be my most memorable live show experience. Absolutely beautiful.
haha i love seeing nick with a guitar. he man handles it like a bass lol. Amazing Band.
i really like this song live. the whole DVD is really cool, too.
i think that its cool that Walla is playing the bass. =]
Such a good song ❤🎶
this song is freaking awesome
I love when a song moves me. This one always does.
every time i listen to death cab, i feel like i have headphones that are connected to gibbard's heart.
LOVE DEATH CAB!!!
I really do love dcfc and this has to be one of my favorite songs by them, I adore it! It's like listening to his soul!

4:24 "Narrow Stairs" was already forming in his mind. What an image, what a metaphor. Pretty neat.
I wish Death Cab still made music this amazing.
my favorite song by them
death cab for cutie ftw! i love them so much!
That bass switch for the insane fuzz. Sounded like a growl.
All these comments about what guitar Ben is playing...
It's a Fender Bullet Version 2.
Tour.... Tour .... Tour
YES!!
this song is my fall anthem
its the drums that are different i think. they change their songs heaps when the play them live, its great.
@ Lilia Diaz: Lol, like every guy, when he's reminiscing about the first girl he had sex with, mentions a college textbook.
It is about the Jesus and Mary Chain, Ben has said so.
Nope, I saw them last year and they switched instruments and everything, they even got a mini drum kit for Ben out!
Please this song at Corona Capital Guadalajara! Please please please!
you're right, i researched it. the body has a sharper shape to it, it's a g&l or a mike lull custom. not a fender.
I love how Nick switches to the bass mid song
awwww
Ben's playing a GNL, they make these strat types with tele necks/headstocks. The whole band has been using them for some time, although I think that he uses the tele version more prominently now a these days.
136k views and no dislikes 🧐 guess it's just that good
That electric piano 😌
6:15 Chris plays the keyboards with his head and hands
Ben's playing a Strat with a Tele neck. Sweet shit
Great stuff :) I've been meaning to get a copy of drive well sleep carefully for a while now. on the DVD, is there a way to turn off the commentary? and just have the music intact?
this song needs an official video
cool
chris walla on bass
ill
nick and chris change instruments during tiny vessels and we looked like giants i believe whenever they play thehm.
Whoops, you're right! Wow, I didn't notice the role switch with Nick. My apologies!
I love the fact that DCFC seems more concerned with topping what they did last time, instead of simply relying on label input for future projects. That's the kind of thing that's killed the buzz I've had for so many bands in the past.
This is cool...Nick and Chris switched instruments.
Been there? Am there. I know how you feel brother
i wonder if there's going to be a band that would be as great as DCFC in the future
I miss Ben Gibbard being chubby, I know he's still the same person, but the way he carries himself now is a little different. I'd kill you all to be here at this video.
all the gear info is on their website
yah he does....i like the shorter hair on him too instead of the 70's hair cut with the mutton chops..still a great singer!!!
Shit its true! wow how cool can that be?
am I weird for thinking that all the guys in this band are beautiful human beings?
btw..JAMC is a math textbook The Journal of Applied Mathamatics and Computing..not jesus and mary chains.
lol of course
Y'know
Actually, it looks like Ben's guitar is an old Squier Bullet from the early 90s.
Nick and Walla switched instruments, yet still awesome
I don’t understand why people keep saying that they switched instruments i did not know that Nick was playing the keyboards?Mr Walla simply handed him his bass than proceeded to make some of the most amazing sounds on the keyboard
@@pz4pz521 the song starts with nick on guitar and Chris on bass
People change.
Chris Walla looks so silly playing the bass in the beginning.
why is Chris playing Bass?

wtb im not familiar with that. what does it stand for
better than the original.... by a lot. :)
why the switch with chris and nick?
Why do they have the bassist playing guitar and the guitarist playing bass?
Chris plays bass? :P
was chris playing bass, and nick playing guitar? wtfh
There is no guitar loop/backup guitarist, Just the distorted bass guitar.
lol why compare
First
lol they played this song for kids?!
roflol
:/
