@@howacarworks As an engineer, I must say you really explained the function and design of the mounts well. Now it makes sense why engine mount replacement can be costly. Some people argue that its "just a piece of rubber". Frankly there is more to it. Anyway keep up the good work buddy. You just earned a new subscriber. Regards from Singapore.

    Greetings, Mr. Alex Muir,
I am Divyansh Sharma, and I love your video course. I’m a man who wants to learn about cars and spend my life with them, and this video course is really, for me at least, the bridge to a life of automotive excitement. I love how you go into extreme detail about everything, and explain it with all your heart. It’s really helpful for car enthusiasts like me, who want to go into cars, but know a fraction of what there is to know before you can pop the hood and get to work. I especially love those little bits of humour you include in the middle, they really brightens things up. I admire how you really know what you’re doing, which gives me, and I’m pretty sure everyone else, confidence, that we won’t screw things up when we try to do something as little as change the oil.
Since I love your course so much, I ask (in the best way possible): When can I get to see the rest of it? You explaining gearboxes, differentials, and with your amazing 3d graphics, the braking system, the power steering, and suspension. I really admire what you’re doing, which is why I’m so excited to see the rest of your magic. Thank you so much for taking time to read this, and I hope you’ll get back to me soon.
    Regards,
    Divyansh Sharma

I am positively outraged. This video series is exactly to sort of thing that really gets my blood boiling. Thanks very bloody much.
I mean, where in the hell were you when I was keeping my 1971 Series II 88" Land Rover on the road?
Sure I had the little Haynes book and even the factory service manual, but where were you and this series? Nowhere to be found, I'm telling you.
Honestly, I'd still be driving the old girl if your series of videos were around. Or if there was an internet, even. What a stupendously good job you've done! Really intelligent answers kept short enough to comprehend, good technique, and superb production values! I've been in the film and video production field for over 40 years, and your series is one of the best uses to which the gamut of filmmaking tools has been put. Well done, old son!
I look forward to viewing more of your master classes for beginners. Thank you so very much for a job well done!

  • @1066gaz

When your car is getting very old your engine mounts get hard/worn and end up vibrating more in the cabin.
This is why you get new rattles start to appear inside your car and end up driving you nuts haha.
    Get new mounts, poly ones.
Also when you take off your mounts when say your replacing your timing belt make sure you fit the mounts exactly back in the same position with the holes aligned up between the rubber mount and the metal bracket so you can see no rubber sticking out when looking down all through the hole.
Otherwise you will get vibration due to the fact it has not gone back to its original position.
You can get some wiggle room in the hole in the metal bracket itself and in the rubber mount,so don't go thinking it all aligns up automatically when you fit it all back.

    Really interesting explaination.
I need to replace the mounts on my 1997 Renault Mégane Coupe which have perished.
It is front wheel drive with top mounts and lower mounts joined to a subframe. Great for in the initial prisuction line where a pre assembled suspension and drivetrain can be mated to the body. Not so good for replacing later in the cars life.

  • @designwithgreg2924

Another problem you may get with hard mounting is the thermal expansion of the engine as it warms up. Allowing some movement keeps the frame and engine from fatiguing each other very warm up and shut down cycle. In other industries, this drives a lot of the mounting design because the relative temperatures are higher and the thermal expansion is greater.
