I recently had my attention called to a bad set of mounts on my mk4 when I quickly let off the throttle after accelerating - it make an audible clunk and upon checking the mounts, the engine side had the aluminum rod insert completely slide out with zero effort from the body end of the mount (ALH mount).

Good explanation! On my Acura, 3 engine mounts are covered with rubber boots, so I can't see the mount's rubber. I did acceleration test in D and R and engine had a usual movement. I do hear clunking(?) sound when I put my car from P to R, D and vice versa. Also when driving from 2nd and downshifting to 1st, I feel engine brake which is accompanied by a sound(thump maybe). Transmission mount is visible and has some cracks around the perimeter, but I don't see how this could be the issue.

My engine mount on my 06 cobalt ss was so worn out that I could move it back amd forth with no problem....and it flexed so bad that I broke 2 flex pipes from it.
I got a new solid rubber mount from zzp and it eliminated 90% of the wheel hop i had AND stopped 99% of engine twist on wot. I got the trans mounts front and back as well...totally changed how my car feels and what I can feel its doing just from the slight vibrations now. I know- what rpm in what gear = my mph.

Great video. One of the first mechanic things I ever did was with my neighbor who was thankfully mechanically inclined and worked on his 60s Datsun convertible, 70s Nova, 90s MB SL500 and 20s BMW 535. He helped me change my motor/tranny mounts on my MK6 VW GLI and I learned and he saved me about $700. I have since replaced those mounts with 034 Motorsport solid rubber (not poly) mounts. I love investing in middle market tools and learning to fix my car, learning all its systems and enjoying my car ownership experience. But unfortunately I will have to pay $1k-$1.4K for labor and $600/parts for chain stretch on my high mileage car. But I always see it as learning how things work and excited to tackle bigger jobs across whatever cars I own in the future.

I have a question I have a 2016 kia soul when I go over bumps I hear Clunking noises and I have no idea what that can be and mechanics these days ain't cheap. It shifts fine I don't hear no noise but the vibration has gotten worse since I replaced the top motor mount. Now I understand all the mounts are supposed to be replaced all at once. Just out of thought would you think it still could be the transmission mount. I can't find no info on Google.

Hey Charles, here’s a story you’ll like. A friend of mine bought a 2001 3 series coupe with a 5 speed manual gearbox a number of years ago from a cop in Yonkers New York. So much buffooning was done on that car. But the thing that struck me the most on the car was the fact that the previous owner welded the rear shocks into place so that they wouldn’t rattle around. Needless to say there was many hours of grinding and swearing involved in order to get the stupid things out.

Thoughts on aftermarket "performance" mounts? Threw a set on my old 2.4L Grand Am yearrrrs ago. Definitely stiffened everything up. They claimed that you can 'reclaim' or 'free up' (not add) 10-15tq. I had no way to measure that, but it did feel a tiny bit snappier off the line. That is, until the polyurethane inserts in the lower dogbone disappeared and the extra flexing of the engine blew out the exhaust flex pipe......

On the torque specifications there are two different torque settings you did not torque the bolts correctly. The 1st torque settings is to get everything lined up correctly and then the 2nd torque settings are the final torque settings. The torque settings are usually two different settings and that isn't so you have two options it's to torque ( 1st settings) bolts in place then the (2nd settings) are the main and final torque settings . If you don't follow the directions for proper installation of any part the part isn't going to last very long.

Great video. I have a question, I own an 05 murano, the CVT transmission has a bad bearing/bearings because it makes a very loud noise. Actually it sounds like a tank driving on a concrete road. Should I replace the bearings or the whole transmission ? Thanks

Nissan Murano? Yeah the CVT in those shit themselves all the time, like every Nissan Jatco CVT does.
Forget the transmission, just replace the whole car!

Did the same job when I was replacing my NB1 clutch and flywheel. Also found the driver side one completely torn, also at about 160k miles, exactly like in this video. I had the pleasure of also replacing the exhaust manifold, which made it WAY easier to change that driver side mount.
For replacement I went with the OEM Mazda Competition mounts which seem like a good compromise between performance and NVH levels.

Bought a motor mount kit for my mk1 Jetta - will definitely follow your guidelines when installing them this spring. Btw - leave it to VW to requiring a motor mount alignment upon replacement! 🤣
NOTE: If you guys want to see pics of my Mk1 - go to Imgur and search for "My 1984 VW Jetta GLi Coupe".

So Mazda use German torque specs too? 27-38 ft lbs translates to Gutentight 🤣
Also, I just wanted to point out that I’m loving your filming transitions. Especially when you are placing yourself in the same shot multiple times. Oh and that transition when you panned past the lift post was amazing!

      195 ft/lbs for the axle bolt + 1/4 turn is gutentight. 😂
