I thought the Mini Tubescreamer was based off the TS9 chip... still a good video!
You are correct, but my understanding is the 4558M and 4558D chips are spec'd the same, just the latter is a surface mount device instead. The batch to batch differences between two of the same type of chips will likely be more significant than the one "ideal" TS9 vs 808 chip. The other changes to the circuit like the output buffer are most of the differences people actually hear between the quintessential 808 and TS9 examples. Not to mention these potentiometers have something like an allowable 10-15% error, which makes direct comparison between even identical chips so problematic.
In the mini's case, I would assume it's getting bottom of the barrel components to meet its MSRP, which is what I would be more concerned about in terms of affecting tone. If anything, this is the absolute worst case scenario for an officially licensed Ibanez Tube Screamer.
This is an example of how all pedal reviews should be done 1. Good explanation of the basic circuitry of each pedal. 2. Use of a looper. 3. Close up view of pedal controls.
Gary Moore this is just your preference. I couldn’t care less about your No1. Nevertheless the guy did a great demo, but to each his own
I love the SD-1 it’s my favorite overdrive.
Me too. I've tried many, many pedals, and this is the one I've kept.
I grew up in the 80’s, back then the rig du jour was a JCM800 or JMP driven by an SD-1. If you were a blues player, you played a blackface or silver face Fender driven by a TS-808 or TS-9 to drive the scooped mids of the Fender and warm it up. This was figured out in the early 80’s at the latest.
It sure worked well for Zakk.
Holy shit. I never realized by adding just a touch of gain on my boss sd1 brings back some low end. Thanks for recommending that.
Man, I'm glad I subscribed to your channel. That's how you make a shoot out! Lots of information and the way you use the exact same riff back to back really tells it all. I hate when people talk in between takes and whatnot. You, sir, are doing it right. Keep at it! - Simlev
Only a couple of minutes in, and I already like this. Your explanation about tolerances is bang on the money. Good job, mate.
I can honestly say that no video has ever made me really hear the differences so clearly. Thanks!
I Just subscribed because of this video, I Love the time and effort that was put in to this video. Great work ethic! I want both pedals! I Love how you use these pedals for the different applications, I have a Mk mini 25 and will be getting a mini recto shortly. And maybe some new overdrives in the future 😁. Thanks! Love the gear man!
That's how you make a comparison! Cheers man and get better soon!
Man when your channel first booted i wasn't sure what I thought about it. But dude you have the absolute most informative detailed non biased content that's really helped lead me through the wilderness of gear
SD-1 can cut right through my tinnitus...it's the winner.
great video!
Good video very useful and informative thanks
100 likes for playing Molly Hatchet
I'm using JHS Bonsai with 9 iconic overdrive circuits in one pedal. Not too cheap, but for 9 classic overdrive in one its a good shout I think. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a helix user and play deathmetal on a 7 string tuned to drop A. I used the OD808 model for a long time until I recently saw a video of a guy using the SD-1 and very much liked his sound. Well, I tried it out and it had all the things I thought were missing from the OD808. Tighter low end response, more bite and less compression. I usually dial the gain to 1 (on a scale 0-10), tone to 6.5, level maxed out. It just hits the spot for me. 😁👌
Thanks! Very interesting these in depth demos (or is it a review?). It would be interesting to do the variants. I was given as a gift, a Green Rhino pedal a couple of years ago from my brother. He told me it's a variant of the Tube Screamer family of overdrives. Never compared though.
I love both honestly they give you that something missing from any riff. I even have stack them with the sd1 into the 808 into a clean tone and it gives me that spark for solos. Great video!
Yeah, they're both amazing pedals and I agree with this guy(and most players) that the TS is best for adding that smooth, jangly overdrive to a cleaner sound and the SD1 is best for pushing an already dirty amp, or dirt pedal, into Hard Rock Heaven. Cheers!
You can get both through analogman btw, sd1 with 808 toggle
Great head to head
I love the TS9 and its basically always been a staple of my rig but I'll be picking up an SD-1 next time I see one sitting in a pawn shop.
The TS9 was my very first pedal and I only recently picked up an SD-1. I really prefer the asymmetrical clipping, and it’s EQ for most of the stuff I do. The TS has always sounded sort nasal to me. I’m not that much of a mid boost fan myself, but when I need a mid boost, it’s going likely to be the SD-1.
I actually prefer the OD-3 for most of the stuff I do.
Brian G the nasal sound of the TS9 might be connected to the habit of most metal players to dial their mid knob very low 🤔🤔🤔
@@BrianGay57 I'm seriously thinking of a OD3 instead of SD1. Any video comparisons you recommend or can you share your impressions?
89ji I’m not a metal player. My problem was too much mids, and too much bass cut.
JoaoGomesYYZ I can’t think of a specific head to head video to recommend since they are pretty different and would be an “apples and oranges” exercise. They both have different strengths and uses in my opinion.
I compared them myself with my rig. I prefer the distortion and eq of the OD-3 for what I do most of the stuff I do which is a live, dense mix. It’s mostly me accompanying acoustic guitar with occasional bass and cajon percussion, or living practice/jams.
In a loud live setting with a vocalist I would probably use the OD-3 as my main OD and use the SD-1 as a lead boost to cut through the mix and not step on the bass, cymbals or vocalist.
To me the OD-3 is a great crunch tone that is very amplike and great when you can’t crank your amp enough for tube breakup, or if you are already running a clean amp of any kind.
The SD-1 like the TS is designed to cut bass and treble and cut in a mix, and they both sound much better into an amp already on the edge of breakup.
If you can afford both, go for it. If you play mostly solo at home the OD-3 will sound “fuller” in that setting. In a mix that “fulness” can quickly turn to muddiness.
I hope this helps!
I came here to watch a TS808 vs SD1 video, I stayed for the Devin Townsend riffing
If only all comparison videos were relevant like this one, :)
Doesn't the Boss OD-1 predate the Tube Screamer? So that the timeline is OD-1 - 808 - SD-1?
I have a dsl5c which pedal would be better for the ufo,Van Halen, ratt, dokken,Motley Crue, poison, white lion tone
Ive owned both (not the TS-Mini but the full sized) and I have to say I enjoy the SD1 a lot more...it seems to hit the amp harder and it sounds AWESOME with my HM-2 clone...i wish i had a better amp (its an old SS stack) but i enjoy the tones i get
I own the Maxon OD808 but I'm looking to buy a Boss Sd1. Great video! But I was told the OD808 is more for 6L6 amps and the Boss sounds better with EL34 amps.
I have both in one actually, analogman SD1 and 808 mod. It’s stupidly good, I usually use sd1 with humbuckers but the 808 is creamy and great for many things too. I love both equally
Whats another drive pedal with nonsymetric clipping?
I seen your hair and instantly subscribed😂
Nice video, very thorough. Impulse responses seem to showcase less of the pedals differences vs. real cabinets or maybe it is just me...
I agree, the more digital you go, the more generic it sounds. but it is way easier to get a tone when your dealing with programming zeros and ones rather than the unpredictability of electrical component specs, mic placement, and room sound. so it's forgivable for me. i think also many modern bedroom producers only think something sounds good if it's perfect and digital in some way. anyway, i accept a real amp with ir's as an acceptable middle ground. (though not excitable middle ground).
Boss SD-1 wins if you ask me. Also nice seeing some black label society in there ; )
the mini is the best sounding tube screamer.
Great explanation. I usually favor the TS pedal and never really knew why, but I'm playing EMG's through an Orange head and cab. Now it makes sense!
I've found that pedals like the SD-1 sound really good for boosting the front end of a solid state amplifier, i'll argue much better even than a tube screamer.
Mini TS9 for me. Less fizzy low end, refined and more pronounced mids, more gnarly in a way. The boss is still great though.
Don't know if the Mini Tube Screamer is a fair comparison with a traditional full size SD-1.
My general thought is what I assumed....Boss had a little more hotness and higher mids....TS seemed warmer and softer on the gain....less mids, slightly more bottom (or let’s more through).....I’d go SD-1 for my needs and I do. I run it at level on max, tone at zero, gain at 5 in front of my 2204 Marshall. Good vid.
The Boss SD-1 has more bass than the Ibanez TS-9. In reality it is in the mid frequencies that act differently. Thetubecreamer has more mid/bass, the boss has more mid/highs
The best way to utilise these pedals is to use the TS to boost the SD1.
Put the TS BEFORE the SD1, tone right down, volume right up and drive right down
Set the SD1 up how you like it then kick both on. Great solo sound
This is only for your style because I don't think this gonna work well if you wanna boost an amp for a high gain metal sound.
Yeah super od more thrashy 🎸
sounding, like early 'tallica. While
ts is more smooth tight focused🤘
Live, the SD-1 cuts better with the high mid’s and if you have more than 1 guitarist, well anyhow I love the TS as a slightly dirty boost and SD for more gainy stuff but it’s all mix and match depending upon the amp/guitar combo. Like others have stated here (use an EQ pedal) and or stack these two together.
Pedals of any type are like different colors of paint.
Great video! I personally prefer EQs for boosting and sculpting the tone in front of an high gain amp over OD pedals. Simply way more tweakable and don't add a layer of diodes distortion you really don't need or want.
I was looking at getting a boss eq to bring the mids up on my fuzz face when I discovered the SD-1 for half the price. Suits my needs perfectly as a 3 in 1 mid / treble / gain booster.
Devin Townsend’s “Deep Peace”! The “Terria” album is a masterpiece!
So wait which one has the tighter bandpass becuz in ur latest overdrive shootout i thought u said the sd-1 was tighter
To my ears it is tighter and ya way better sound into max hi gain
Yup right when u test the ultra hi gain it was clear the winner was the sd-1
looks like someone paid attention in school. i don't even know how to use a capital at the first of a sentance, or spell sentance.
For real though, awesome job!
I back SD1 har. I don’t play didn’t, but I play low tunings. Great pedal for doom. Nice for a bit of dirt on Cure-styled 80s baritone stuff too, even though that style is usually super clean.
So there’s really no point in getting a TS if I already have an SD-1? Using passive pickups
Man, the TS has a midbass hump like no other, totally muddies the mix. I usually love that pedal (I have the full size, though the same I suppose), but I might have to pick up an SD-1 now.
Great tones , but i need to choose one for a classic death metal , which one is better...??
How classic are we talking? In front of a dirty amplifier, the SD-1 is the better choice, but if you're into the Gothenburg chainsaw sound, that would require a full blown distortion pedal.
@@PlagueScytheStudiosclassic florida death metal like, massacre, death, cannibal corpse and like benediction , cancer and old sepultura ( arise)...80-90 death metal era...
That's a pretty big tonal spectrum. The CC guys used everything from Marshall valve states to Metal Zone boosted Dual Rectifiers back then. They've since started boosting their Triple Recs with Maxon ST-9s. Chuck Schuldiner also used Valvestates, though the earlier Death albums were recorded with Randall RG100s. If you have something high gain already like those amps already, the super OD is the better choice.
You really should have both pedals. TS is classic rock and SD-1 is more high harmonic lively for 80s Metal. SD-1 is so cheap. There is a reason to have most of these reference pedals. I forgot to mention that I have not even bought a real Tube Screamer. TO800 $25 to spend a little and find out what TS is about.
George Paxson I prefer the SD-1 but I don’t play metal. I like the tube amp like harmonics that comes from the asymmetrical clipping.
The TS always sounded sort of nasal (but not in a good way) to me. Sort of like a loud transistor radio. I realize that it’s narrow EQ range helps to cut in a crowded mix, but I usually am accompanying acoustic guitars with no drum kit.
In my mind there's no arguing that the TS sounds better and more tubelike at lower gain. But as soon as the gain starts to increase the SD-1 give a more direct and tight sound that just works.
SD-1 will take you where you want to go.
This makes me realize more than ever how underrated the sd1 is for boosting or dirt sounds...the ts9 is only good for clean stuff and because it was "sponsored" by SRV.
SD1 🤘❤️
The SD1w wins against a standard Maxon/Ibanez but the Maxon ST9+ Pro is king in my opinion.
I have similar thoughts, because the standard ts is a bit too smooth and nice. Both the SD1W and ST9 Pro+ are more aggressive.
Nothing beats a Maxxon OD808
honestly, i tested my maxon 0d808 against my buddy's mini tube screamer like the one used in this video. while i liked the maxon better, it wasn't a huge difference. i'm not even sure it was enough to cover manufacturing tolerances. if we had tried two different pedals, but the same models, it might have been different results.
And for high gain, i've found using my old boss gt-6 multi effects processer/modeler to design custom overdrives got me a lot better sound than using any of my dedicated overdrive pedals, especially the maxon. (which is probably my least favorite high gain overdrive pedal i own). honestly, i don't know why so many people drive recto's with them. thing guts my natural rectifier tone more than any other pedal i've put in front of it.
SD-1 all the way:) The TS seems to be a little filtered or compressed. I feel the SD-1 does exactly what it is supposed to . The guy is obviously seems biased with the TS-9 even when it clearly lost in certain impulse responses. Seems like he was more willing to make excuses for the TS9 than the SD-. Distortion needs to rear it's ugly head at some point and the DS-1 does just that without trying to suppress it. I think the tone shouldn't be "squashed" when using a distortion pedal and to me that's what the TS9 sounds like it doing. The SD_1 lets that tone breathe a little more. Tone sucking in any case is not good. Great shootout though and great commentary. Thumbs up on the overall video.
That couldn't be further from the truth - I am an SD-1 fanboy through and through. I recommend it over any tube screamers for high gain applications any day. But the reality is, the TS-808 circuit is simply better suited for plenty of other applications, and lots of people genuinely wont care about its shortcomings in rock and metal since that sound is so ingrained.
@@PlagueScytheStudios if that's true then you sure didn't "appear" to portray that in the video, but that's just my opinion. You totally "appeared" to favor the TS9 in almost every case. I did give you a thumbs up any way. Cheers.
Thanks! I try to be as balanced and impartial as possible in these shootouts. I've already made up my mind, I want people to make up their own based on the data I present and how I interpret those individual results. A handful of breakup and high gain tests isn't going to capture my full opinion on the subject, which is why I explicitly endorse the SD-1 for its price and high gain/ERG superiority at the end of the video. The screamers will always be the go to for other genres though, because that compressed distortion profile you're hearing is exactly the sound many are going for in their touch of dirt tones.
@@PlagueScytheStudios I hear ya. I listen to various genres of music and I understand what you are saying. I love tone and am a fan of the mid and upper frequencies when it comes to analyzing tone I guess, unless it's hip hop of course where the bottom end is important. At any rate, great video.
I disagree, his sd-1 fan boy seemed quite present in a very, "i know i have this bias, and i'm telling you so, while i explain the actual strengths of the ibanez, yet saying i like the sd-1 more" kinda way. thought it was very well explained, presented, and even keeled. great video man.
I’m not jealous of the hair at all...😒
Hello and congratulations for the video (you have to excuse me, but this is the first time I'm seeing it, and I see that it was published 4 years ago..). However, I think you are getting confused about the lowend issue. The Boss SD-1 has more bass than the Ibanez TS-9. In reality it is in the mids frequencies that act differently. The tubescreamer has more mid/lows, the boss has more mid/highs. In fact, I think the tubescreamer sounds really bad on a completely clean channel and if you raise the gain it seems like there is an amplifier coverage. The tubescreamer only works well as a boost on a crunch or already distorted channel. Conversely, the boss also works well on clean. However I reiterate that the boss has more low end than the TS-9. But then again, if you put on headphones and listen to your own video you will be able to see for yourself what I am saying: the boss has a much fuller sound!
Greetings!
I have both and the SD1 sounds a little harsh to my ears. There’s something about it that makes it sound... spikey. I know that doesn’t make sense. I use it as a boost and put it before my TS9 for when I really want to crank the TS9, which is the sound I prefer.
23:40 yyyyeeeeeeeEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
Cool vid buddy :)
I really don't like the sound of a tube screamer boosting a gainy amp when the overdrive is anything above 9 o'clock
Boss all the way!!
EQ pedals have more knobs/sliders, most guys like the simplicity of a factory baked in EQ in tubescreamer like pedals Because of their simplicity of use, you start adding in all sorts of knobs and guys start tweaking down into a rabbit hole
In your second (mid gain) demo, the weakness of these types of pedals really is apparent. The amp alone sounded really good, and when you turned on the tube screamer the tone went flat and dead sounding by comparison. The SD was more lively sounding, but probably still didn't sound as good as the amp alone.
Carbon battery on both then now
boss has been hated so much don't know why. have tried many pedals so far, and only boss brings me where i want : the old OD-1 & SD-1. Stacked they make my clean amp sound like a jcm800, with the help of a third pedal. Not speaking of the CE-1 which has never been equaled and not even closely cloned.
ts mini is a ts9
Paler than usual. Get well soon! You need bed.
handsome guy
I caught four of the doohickeys out of the sd1. It's still screams LOL I think they call them capacitors or resistors.
I lost my SD-1 and replaced it with an TS808 and no one noticed. Not even my fellow members
SD-1 sounds best
I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you
check out Pete Thorn's video on how to use a tubes creamer... it works much better at pushing the front of your amp into distortion while adding a little of it's own distortion than as a "distortion pedal"... just my 2 cents
Hello Jesus
Sd1 wins every time cuz it supports 9v battery and with a carbon zinc one it's in another league
Overdose a Spotify rapper. 😆 LOL
TS sounds better to me overall..
damn you're long winded dude
