Great video, Rob! I’m loving these comparisons. I tend to grab the Peirre Ferrand Dry Curaçao most often, but I love them all. I also prefer salt on only half the glass 👍
I have been watching Anders videos and heard him mention your channel. I enjoyed this comparison, but I will say that using Grand Marnier makes a great Grand Marnier cocktail with Tequila. I prefer Cointreau or a really good Triple Sec (not the $7 version) to make a Tequila cocktail. The GM version is good, but I find the GM overwhelms the Don Julio, which is my favorite sipping Tequila as well.
That was great Rob. It's really great showing how your palate can react differently to certain spirit based on how it is used. I'm also glad to see you prefer a 2-1-1 ratio too.
Interesting and great video, I personally enjoy using Cointreau. But at 4:12 you said you need sweetener when using a cheap tequila but that's exactly what Hornitos is no?
For a crisp drink, go for blanco tequila, Cointreau, and simple syrup as needed. For a smooth drink, anejo, Grand Marnier, and agave. Choose the style based on the food. Bright with tomatillo and smooth with tomatoes.
Patron Citronge became my go to trip sec over the years, but I prefer a silver tequila. I also like to add a pinch of salt in the shaker, and of course only fresh lime juice. Great lineup and comparisons.

Rob, tremendous job on this. I have not had the pleasure to A/B a lot of these, so it's great to kind of do this vicariously through someone else for now! :)
Great video. Agree that reposado is better than blanco for margaritas. Personal preference, I guess, as most places use blanco instead. I couldn't afford Cointreau or Marnier at the time so, I got Gran Gala the Italian version made with Brandy. It made a good Margarita 😊🍸 and taste good by itself.
Break it all down for us Rob! I really like the segment. Super cool to hear all the differences and your perspective of booze. Surprised with the triple Sec rating low on tasting and then working so well in the Margarita
For me, an easy #1 would be adding 3/4 to 1 oz of Agave nectar to the Cointreau mix. I also want a lime wedge to squeeze into it, so I guess I prefer 1.5 oz of lime juice instead, but I usually splash a little more Tequila also.
I tried 2 oz Patron, 1/2 oz. Curaçao, 1oz lime and 1/4 oz. agave syrup. It tasted damn near perfect to me. The ratios were inspired by the “original” Mai Tai recipe.

I've tried all of these (and many others) with and without agave, and my favorite is Cointreau with agave. Cointreau is not as good without agave. Many are very good, it comes down to personal preference, there is not an objective best.
I use 43 for the orange essence, and maybe some orange bitters. Sometimes I'll go with some other bitters I have: Japanese chili and lime, margarita bitters, smoked chili. They're all great! Have you had Ghost Tequila? Very smooth blanco infused with ghost peppers. Sip on its own, and makes a great Margarita! Cheers from Indiana!

I prefer silver tequilas for margaritas. The camel coloring added to the dark tequilas for the purposes of adding color, adds a mildly bitter taste, which I feel is an unnecessary additional flavor. I feel the darker tequilas are best for sipping or shots. I also always add agave for sweetness. Since both tequila and agave sweeteners are made from agave, they pair much better than sugar based sweeteners. Of course, what tastes better is completely subjective and can obviously differ from person to person. When we lived in Houston, we absolutely loved DeKuyper O3 Premium Orange Liqueur. Unfortunately, I haven’t been to find it in the Los Angeles area. Loved your video!!!
One thing I've learned is that which orange liqueur works best depends on which tequila it's mixed with. It makes a big difference. I don't know Hornitos well but I don't believe it's additive free and I always start there.
