I got this set for Christmas the year it released, I was so excited! Still have it on display all these years later, and am now building Rivendell to accompany it! Lego LOTR might be my all time favorite theme
Wow I didn’t know that older Lego sets essentially have an “expiry date”. I bought an Orthanc in 2017, only because I’m a huge LotR fan. I only made my first lego set a few months ago. Rivendell. It was great. I intend to make this one soon, I’ll be sure to take extra care with the brown bricks. I’m assuming it’s a sure thing mine will be brittle like yours?
Yes. The “brittle brown” is not openly talked about by LEGO, but there was an issue with brown and dark red pieces produced during the 2010’s. Not sure how wide spread the issue was, but this issue wasn’t discovered until years later when the pieces were found to be in the brittle state. The good news is that LEGO will replace the broken pieces if you submit a request and talk to customer service. As a new LEGO builder, I should also warn you that white bricks, gray bricks, and tan discolor if exposed to sunlight. So just make sure your Rivendell is away from windows and out of the sun.
Yikes opening a sealed set like that only to be greeted with brittle brown was brutal. Plus the light brick is dead too, although I do believe the batteries are replaceable. But still an amazing set and awesome that you built it. Better than being stuck in a box. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing this theme return :)
@@jakegalvin8509Thanks for the info, I’m going to build the set in the next couple of months. Do you just contact support if I have the same issue? Were the replacement pieces an exact match for the originals?
That’s good to know! Thanks for that tidbit! So glad that’s it’s finally over. Though I have a lot of backlog to build and will probably see these problems for awhile.
As a die hard LOTR fan, I sincerely forgive you for calling Uruk-Hai an Orc. ;) Ps. If building Treebeard was so painful, imagine if all of Orthanc was made of reddish brown pieces... Dx
Probably my most wanted Lego set of all time. All the Lotr sets are fantastic, I'm excited for the upcoming rivendell set.
I might be able to get it today
wondering what u think of this after barad dur is coming out now

Definitely! I believe we will see a return of the theme this year. Or just one set anyway.
@Ryker Marsh I paid $200 (retail price) when it was still on store shelves.
@Ryker Marsh Yeah, basically…. 😆
I opened one not long ago and had some of treebeard crack. Lego replaced all the broken parts for free.

I have this set
I had to use super glue to fix one of the ball joint pieces on treebeard
Lego fixed the red brown bricks cracking issue in 2018 it was a 30ish year long issue.

Lego breaking is so so sad
