Under Stairs Playroom - Full Build Start to Finish

  • **I mistakenly hung the drywall backwards - I'll do it right on my next project.
I made a cool space for the kids to play under the stairs, and also a dark space for my night-nurse-wife to sleep during the day. My family still loves the space! You've got to find stuff to do when stuck in quarantine for months on end.
Come along for the adventure of transforming the wasted space under the basement stairs into a playroom. This video goes through the whole project from start to finish: cleaning, planning, framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, flooring and everything in between.
    Total cost of project: $1,000
Music all from RUclips Audio Library

So, naturally, as kids, we started using under the stairs as a small playroom.

Awesome project and build. I've wanted to do this at every house I've lived in with that dead space, over the past 30 years, but they were rentals.
I feel like there were a couple missed opportunities though.
    I would've
    1. Used a moisture barrier on any concrete that wasn't insulated in some way. Just as a precaution.
    2. Used insulation or some other sound dampening method on interior walls and the stair ceiling .
    3. It appears you kept the air duct box accessible with a removable top, maybe turn a couple sections on the front of it into doors for hidden storage.
I would've been upset to find what you did in there. Just because it is closed off dead space does not mean the building crew can leave garbage in there. And there is no acceptable excuse for incomplete framing.

About 10 or so years ago, a couple in queens nyc went to prison for trying to rent a space under the stairs, just like this little space for $2,000+ a month.
The person who would have been stupid enough to rent that out, would not have access to anywhere in the house except for the bathroom and thay could not cook in the house either.
when they got caught, the couple got a huge fine and both went to prison for it.....LOL The bank took their house back as well.
just thought I would mention that funny thing that happened, that stupid people do in nyc a while ago. :)
    .
** Note ** NEVER put a heater under the stairs, as you wont have direct supervision of that heater, and it could burn your house down...

You have all the aspect of a good carpenter but your missing one thing. You got to remember I have been doing home remodeling for over 20 years. But the one aspect of carpentry or any home remodeling project that your missing is, when doing anything, always remember if you want to be a true carpenter is while your working you got to stick your tongue out to the left or the right. LOL
