Under Stairs Playroom - Full Build Start to Finish

- **I mistakenly hung the drywall backwards - I'll do it right on my next project.
I made a cool space for the kids to play under the stairs, and also a dark space for my night-nurse-wife to sleep during the day. My family still loves the space! You've got to find stuff to do when stuck in quarantine for months on end.
Come along for the adventure of transforming the wasted space under the basement stairs into a playroom. This video goes through the whole project from start to finish: cleaning, planning, framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, flooring and everything in between.
Total cost of project: $1,000
Music all from RUclips Audio Library
I'll give you a seven out of 10 for your amateur skills. I'll give you 100 for your dad skills. And another 100 for your husband's skills great work kids will always remember this Dad
The lack of respirator was giving me anxiety.
Agreed. There were details that wouldn’t have passed if you were doing this professionally, but this was an amazing home project that came out perfect for what you intended. Great job! Not only is this great for your son, but a great use of space/selling point if you ever move.
Everything came out great couldn’t agree more 100 for dad 100 for husband 80 for details Sheetrock backwards
I 2nd this
I turned the same room under my stairs into my daughter’s movie room complete with popcorn machine. We have two sets of stairs so the other room under the stairs is my sons gaming room. This really helps them keep the room clean!🙏🏽
@Monke George thank you for crawling out of your basement to hate. Put that same energy into yourself and one day you can move out of the basement!
That's awesome
stop the cap
Dis I ask
@@WeazelNewsUSA You must be mad you don’t have a house to do this in. 🥴😬
Backwards drywall, excessive mudding, crazy dad painting job AND ALL PERFECT because you tried something new in order to give 100% as a parent. You also showed your kiddo that mistakes are how we learn and that waiting for perfect doesn't get things done, trying does❤
I saw that backwards drywall and was like whats wrong with him
what a back handed compliment lol
I was about to say where did you got that brown drywall
Yeah it’s effort determination and patience that get things done and hard work
@@nolanbugg in germany we call it "Pfusch" ... You dont do something Like that
I stopped this video at 33:56, I'm a professional painter, drywall, construction, I know how much work and hours you have into this project, it's alot, it's stressful, I can tell your a good father, and a good man! Your kid, or kids? Are gonna live and pass this room off to they're kids, good video man, and give yourself credit, you killed it!
Did he put the drywall backwards? I’m bugged by it but I don’t think it matters
@@dw.203 yes its backwards
and as a painter you also know not to use silicone..
he also put the drywall wall pieces first instead of the ceilling pieces. if you put the ceilling pieces first the wall pieces will help to hold it a bit.
@@maik1982 im painter and we use silicom always lol
Nice job brother, first time I have seen someone put drywall on backwards but it’s the thought that counts and I’m sure your son will appreciate the space and have a great time with his friends.
Your little boy will remember that for a long time! 👍🏼🤩
Lol My parents would've just made a hole in the closet and said, "Go play but don't touch any wires." 😆
Too true!
Nice. But why is the sheet rock backwards?
😆😆👍
Lmao!! …..my Mom would’ve said “Take your butt outside and play and when you get thirsty drink out of that water hose!” 🤦🏽♀️🤣🤣🤣
My parents didn't have seatbelts in cars and had led paint. It was a different time. Pre-Harry Potter. 🤣😈
I actually got teary eyed when you brought your son in at first playing with the color lights on the remote 🥺💓 You can tell you love your family so much and put so much thought, skill and love into building this! I enjoyed watching the process so much and just as excited as a child to see what you would do with it imagining how much fun it would be as a child / siblings to play in it! 🤗🥰 May your family be blessed and your business and channel continue to grow and prosper! 🙏🏽💓

Harry Potter would've loved this.....

😂😂😂
I THOUGHT OF THAT
Ironically, I thought of making a similarly shaped closet that we didn't use into a tiny room like this as a teenager..... 30 years ago.... and have thought of it every time I'm in a house with a dead space like that.... but always rentals. I will do something like this when I purchase my own house.
Ye right your so correct
This is amazing good job!
who are you💀
@@jpm.motivationshes famous at tiktok an here duhhh

So cool you should make a secret play room with swings and slides in it. I bet the kids would love that .
well. if you ever decide to move in the future (doubt it) but that just upped your house value, so thats a plus haha. but still this is amazing, well done. I wouldve died for something like this as a kid lol
It doesn’t have to be perfect, to that baby you are a super hero that made him a play house. It’s perfect in his eyes and that’s all that matters.
WOW, awesome. I watched the whole video. This is on the long side for a youtube video, but I was engaged the whole time. Great job. Really inspiring.
I live watching the sped up but whole version of the video cause you know they'll film any hiccups instead of cutting to the next clip and just telling us what they had to do. This is so awesome to watch!
I installed 6’ long shelves along the side walls in the under-the-stairs storage area at our house. Lots of space for canned food. The vacuum cleaner lives there too.
ETA: thank you for making and posting this video. It was interesting to watch!
Wicked cool. I love that. My granddaughters would be in there all day. 💞just think the bottom few stairs on hinges to open up. Now that be wicked awesome 😎
For some reason, i'm watching Thais vide from Brazil. Great Job.
In the uk pretty much every house has this lil room under the stairs!
It’s great storage place for shoes!
You are a cool dad. MY father built us a house that we lived in as we grew up as teenagers we called it the bunk house it was our own little house.
Great job, your mother in law will be happy to have her own room....
😂
Concrit: you should have done one of the walls in blackboard paint.
Wouldve made the space feel too small.
Maybe a whiteboard and some dry erase markers would be ideal cuz it wouldn't make the room feel so small
We are planning to do that (and more) in a future video showing it in use and fully decorated - great idea!
It definitely would've made it seem a lot smaller! But just doing one of the far walls would actually elongate the perceptual space!
@@nathancarbo There's clear blackboard varnish that you can just put on top of any color and it'll work just like a regular blackboard without the usually dark green/black color making it look oppressive
The way that dog strolled through was telling. "I asked you for ONE dog house and you didn't have time???"
As a Kat mom I will be building this for all of my Cats 🐱
Outstanding! Your dedication to this project is beyond comparison. You have a lovely family and I wish you much happiness.
My dad is an Electrical and pluming Engineer so I am going to convince him to do this you did a good job.
I ment try to convince him
That was kool!! When you’re looking for your wife you now know where she’ll be 😂😂
So nice you took the time to do this for your little man. Great job. He knows you love him.
This was a good idea. Reminds me of my childhood. We had a little area under our stairs that we used to play in. It started out as a Vanderbilt Commodores memoribilia room, but my dad built an extra room, and moved everything to that room. So, naturally, as kids, we started using under the stairs as a small playroom.
We had an apartment back in the 70's we had a big closet under the stairs, my parents cleaned it out a couple of times me and my sisters would play in it for about a week or 2 until it was full again : ) good times
The level of skill needed to do this is mind-blowing! Amazing job! I just subscribe. :)
Thank you! Glad to have you on board.
Adam, you are such a cool dad and husband. Only a good man would take care of his family like this. Stay safe.
So relaxing to watch! i know it was a big job, it inspired me to complete my diy this weekend. thank you!
What are you making?
Bout time a video of a father doing something nice for his son..took time but your baby is worth it...Great brain storming great job..love the choice of color..I really enjoyed this video
34:10: that shirt really represented how much effort you put into this and gave it your all. This video
was amazing to watch.❤️❤️
Such a cute kid!
That would make a dope panic room 🤣🤣🤣
This is every kids dream, then when you grow up its the dream to give to your kid. So well done great video
Really cool project for your son. Its tough working in tight spots like that but turned out really nice 👍
Experts had to start somewhere my friend, I started out a novice i have now built a conservatory, outbuilding, and changed our house from a 3 bed to 4 bed, bug to do something for your kid and see his face, he'll remember that and you'll look back on how bad you did things, the way I do now. Keep on building and making things your doing great 👍
This is the Dursley’s on a next level
What a BEAUTIFUL IDEA!!!
What a beautiful job 👏
This is epic! What we do (my family) will grab most of the blankets we have and make a HUGEEE blanket fort in the living room and we put gaming stuff in the too!! It’s SOOO MUCH FUN!
This looks like a quarantine project to me
Lol
Even when you know what you're doing, home improvement projects take longer than you expect.
I did a similar thing for our grandchild a walking in closet. We made a small cinema. Painted dark blue with stars in the ceiling. Turned out very nice.
That sounds amazing! Well done 👏❤️
You are a cool dad sir!
So cool!! PS: your underwear collection is truly impressive! 👍😅
Great job dad! I love this video and your enthusiasm was amazing you and Mom did an amazing job. The work came out great. If I could offer one suggestion maybe add a vent somewhere to keep the air circulating. Other than that great job you two.
Right! Kids tend to have accidents of all kinds which means possible water spills leading to mold etc.
...I was waiting for the blackboard paint to make an appearance, lol! It's awesome!!
Great ideas, but the install of the sheetrock backwards is driving me nuts!! Otherwise nice ideas here and concept. Not sure if you had this much know how you messed up the drywall part.. LOL...
You are right! I didn’t realize until it was too late. Still have lots to learn :)
He literally addressed it.
Yes, the backwards drywall was killing me too. Lol
I’m no one to judge but I looked at the first piece of drywall and literally said” is that shit backwards?!?” Still probably better than I could do lol
That's also why it took so much paint. The brown side is super absorbant
bro I love that god gave a shiny sprit for your son and u bless your son with ur love as the father keep up the good work keep it up
Every single house in Ireland uses this space. As standard there's already a door or else it's not even enclosed. It's where most of us keep our coats hats umbrellas and shoes/boots/slippers.
A bunch of house in The US utilize this space too. My friends' stairs have door where they store household items as well.
@@RiseAbovePride same. Mine is just a storage closet. Very handy.
Nice
Tons of my friends made there's into a cool room for their pets
Now you can keep your children in there, too. 😂
WOW. A For EFFORT!!! You're brave and fearless. I'm claustrophobic just watching the vid!
What great parents you two are! Love Benjamin’s new playroom!
I would of never thought by looking at you that you could do all that. Jack of all trades
I just subscribed because this guy is the coolest dad in the universe.

The craftsmanship and creativity is strong with this one
Imagine the kid gets older and makes a gaming setup in here
😂
Could totally put a desk in front of the bench where the tube thing is
Exactly what I thought
😂😂
I could see him doing that
And the award for Father of The Year goes to.....The dad that built a portal to Amazing 👏🙌
Ok Ik I’m five months late on this but it’s actually cool, like I’d sleep in there if I had one
Same
Me too
But imagine someone walking up the stairs at night lol 😂
Your the coolest dad god bless you and your family
you should put carpet on the plywood box you painted white. It'll prevent splinters and it will double as a comfy seat.
I'm wondering why he didn't put carpet on the floor for the kid to sit and kneel on.
I wish I had cool parents like this- ;-;
👏👏 Absolutely Amazing Job...
I watched the entire video all way through. This may actually motivate my husband to do something like this.🤭
I am subscribing for sure.
Thanks for sharing
What a great dad. Wish there were more men like this.
Awesome project and build. I've wanted to do this at every house I've lived in with that dead space, over the past 30 years, but they were rentals.
I feel like there were a couple missed opportunities though.
I would've
1. Used a moisture barrier on any concrete that wasn't insulated in some way. Just as a precaution.
2. Used insulation or some other sound dampening method on interior walls and the stair ceiling .
3. It appears you kept the air duct box accessible with a removable top, maybe turn a couple sections on the front of it into doors for hidden storage.
I would've been upset to find what you did in there. Just because it is closed off dead space does not mean the building crew can leave garbage in there. And there is no acceptable excuse for incomplete framing.
Our old man actually did this for me and my little bro and sis when we were kids in the early 90s and it was awesome
About 10 or so years ago, a couple in queens nyc went to prison for trying to rent a space under the stairs, just like this little space for $2,000+ a month.
The person who would have been stupid enough to rent that out, would not have access to anywhere in the house except for the bathroom and thay could not cook in the house either.
when they got caught, the couple got a huge fine and both went to prison for it.....LOL The bank took their house back as well.
just thought I would mention that funny thing that happened, that stupid people do in nyc a while ago. :)
.
** Note ** NEVER put a heater under the stairs, as you wont have direct supervision of that heater, and it could burn your house down...
Wow man you did a great job and for your son at that what an amazing dad way to go..
It’s the builders not finishing the job that’s upsets me
You know the saying out of sight out of mind! For storage alone this space was valuable! Access was ruining the view in the living room! Could have used wainscoting to hide access! Oh well kids and later family will find uses for the space!
@@janetcurtis1727 I would have made the door one of those hidden shelves. Would just look like a small set of shelves and a good hiding place if an intruder came in,lol

The painting part is so satisfying to me
Lol he put his " sheetrock" backwards 🤣.... Guess that's a new look for him !
It’s drywall
@@kendallturner9732 actually the paper material on the back of the sheetrock can show through paint. and the backside has rounded edges that can be noticeable
plus the green sheetrock is supposed to protect against water damage, which kind of defeats the purpose if it's backwards
Stop being rude.
@@afuturehobo correct. I did drywall for 10 years
A true labor of love. That was a lot of work.
Could be used as a safe room in severe weather or other issues if need be! But great idea
10/10 for the paint job... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
One day when he’s older this will be a epic gaming room
STOP COMMENTING ABOUT THE WALLS. I TAKE IT A A MEAN COMLIMENT! He put a lot of work into this! And it’s awesome how he did this!
You have all the aspect of a good carpenter but your missing one thing. You got to remember I have been doing home remodeling for over 20 years. But the one aspect of carpentry or any home remodeling project that your missing is, when doing anything, always remember if you want to be a true carpenter is while your working you got to stick your tongue out to the left or the right. LOL
Your kids will be so happy to have such a great father
This makes me wonder how much space Harry had under the stairs.
Harry lives in the UK - typically our cupboards under the stairs are so tiny that it likely stunted his growth! 😂
Enough for a bed and lightbulb, that’s all you need
Your son will never forget this. I sure never forgot about the fort my dad built me 20 years ago.
Also, it is easier to peel off the tape when the paint is still wet.
Now that's a cool dad right there, that kid is soo lucky to have such a father like u
So awesome, Adam!! Great job, and love the led lights! (Kris said, how the hey did Adam fit in there?! 😄)
Hahaha, I fold up like an origami crane (miss you all a lot!)
@@adamwamack7709 Sorry to piggyback, but I had to say hey! This video showed up on my feed and it immediately dawned on me..."I went to high school with this guy!! 😀 It's so good to see you! We need to talk!

What really makes this special is that you were dedicated and did it with you’re own hands it would not be the same if you hired a stranger to do it great job great dad 😊
I can only imagine what it would be like in the future when he grows up I can just see the desk, a computer, and a gaming system in there
It will be storage for his childhood things. He won’t fit
I bet you could fit a nice mini setup in here
this is so freaking cool!! Thanks for documenting the process, I know your boy is going to appreciate what you built. Shoot, I’m 23 and I want one too.
Is a good ventilation system factored into that project
Probably not
Not necessary
