What did you think of the music in the arcade version of Strider? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1989: tinyurl.com/1989-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
The Capcom coin-op was intentionally, by design, a very quickly moving game, moving the player along briskly, but the C64 conversion seems slow, although the GFX (albeit sans backgrounds) are good, superior to the other 8-bit platforms, as seen in the video. It was getting harder and harder to port the coin-ops through an 8-bit computer in those days, whatwith the 16-bit computers coming around. That's why the (16-bit) Amiga conversion is so much better than the 8-bit versions, see. I plunked a LOT of Quarters into Capcom's _Strider_ in the late-'80s, but never played the C64 version very much, myself.
It's a very fast moving arcade games, which promptly attributed to me having to put more 10ps into the machine as I'd die quite regularly hehe - a great game for sure 😇🕹👌
I remember the music really stood out to me when I bought this back in '89, enough so that I recorded it onto tape along with favorite songs from other games to listen to whilst doing homework. The game itself was okay but wasn't one that threatened to wear out my joystick over many frantic game sessions, and I'm pretty sure I beat it the same afternoon it was bought and only went back to it a few times after. One of the great things about having games at home was never running out of quarters, but that also made it tough for home games to hit the right balance of difficulty, game length and replayability, especially when ported from the arcade. On balance I think I've enjoyed original games the most, where they started with the idea of making something fun for home to begin with rather than trying to compress a big arcade experience into a little computer package. Still, seeing what folks managed to pull off even with compromises, always impresses me. If I ever managed to animate a bouncing ball, much less a character moving through a scrolling environment with slopes and enemies and an orbiting personal battle droid, I'd be chuffed until the day I die.
That opening few bars of music on the Arcade version still make the hairs on the ends of my arms stand up! Such a nostalgic classic piece of opening music.... the C64 version was considered a bit of a flop, which was a shame 😇🕹️👌
Ahh awesome, yeah I know a friend who has a custom built MAME machine with Hyperspin etc, they look amazing. I'd love to get something like that someday, they look the business if anything! 😇🕹️👌
It's first time I've seen the C64 version, and it looks a lot better than I thought it would. I've only really played it on the Mega Drive, and I never expected the C64 would be capable of a decent version back in the day.
I had it on Mega Drive too, was really fast & fluid. Tiertex did their best with the C64 port I suppose, but they don't have the greatest reputation within the community for producing solid games, which was a shame 😇🕹👌
I hadn't realized that Strider (aka Aragorn II, son of Arathorn, Elessar and heir to the throne of Gondor) was involved in a Russian counter-strike. I guess you learn something new every day
Great game in the arcades, brings back a thousand memories playing as a kid. The C64 port wasn't brilliant but still like you say the graphics were very good 😇🕹👌
I've never played Strider. I've seen the Sega version, which on the cover the main protagonist, the Strider, had blonde hair and wore purple vest and purple trousers and wielded a sword. Strider would have made a good Jean-Claude Van Damme flick.
Yeah, he looked more like the arcade version of Strider on the Japanese Mega Drive Cover... but you're right, Van Damme could have perfected the role had it been made into a film. In fact, this would make an awesome film!! 😇🕹️👌
Great review bro, but yes the sega genesis version was a lot better on the eyes. Not sure if youre taking requests but id love to see you review "the captive" by Mastertronic
You're right - I checked the level locations... The Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (called "St. Petersburg" during the arcade game's attract sequence), the Siberian Wilderness, the Aerial Battleship Balrog, the Amazonian Jungle, and the Grandmaster's lair itself, the Third Moon 😇🕹️👌
I had a few games like that, I'd turn the datasette upside town... fiddle with the azimuth head alignment... run the cassette head cleaner... and every 1 in 100 times it'd load. So much easier now with the .tap .d64 files! 😇🕹️👌
Once u seen tiertex on the title screen u know its gonnabe awful at best. Best bit is the music ,otherwise steaming pile of poo The amiga version was even bigger let down as was capable of doing a decent conversion. no idea what version they played to give it a high score review And as for the follow up tiertex managed to make it even worse. I was amazed capcom let them butcher there ip Fingers crossed u back to a decend game 2mo
Fingers crossed indeed but you know how subjective these games are, am sure there were some who loved it. Oh and there's another Tiertex game coming soon... brace yourself 😂🕹👌
@CheekyCommodoreGamer so many games they butchered from streetfighter to black tiger, un squadron , rolling thunder. The scary thing is they only closed the doors in 2021 after 30 plus year
Couldn't agree more. The C64 version was terrible, the only interesting thing for me was the version I had was the first ever single file multiload crack I'd ever seen. I'm sure that was done for the boasting rights, not that it made it any better to play. I guess it showed how many spare bytes Tiertex left by the fact it could all be squished into a single file and the various levels decompacted without it corrupting anything. The ZZap guys must have been bribed to give the Amiga version 96%. It was bloody awful, like all the games Dr John Prince wrote for Tiertex. It was a complete pile of shit and an insult to the Amiga!
I chose this for Christmas, it was clearly so rubbish that I barely remember playing it. I remember the music, it almost makes me feel melancholy, but that maybe just because it brings back disappointed memories of wasting money on this rubbish.
It sucks that this game potentially ruined that Christmas! Why not revitalise the nostalgia and stick it on again in a couple of months hehe. Yeah I agree with you though, it was a pretty poor game as a whole, which was a massive shame as I love the coin-op 😇🕹👌

I still play the arcade version of strider on my atgames arcade legends stand up machine! (running coinops) its brilliant
Ahh awesome, yeah I know a friend who has a custom built MAME machine with Hyperspin etc, they look amazing. I'd love to get something like that someday, they look the business if anything! 😇🕹️👌

Haven't seen the C64 version of Strider yet. Doesn't look to bad. Nice sound also. Only played the Arcade and the Mega Drive versions which are great.
I remember thinking that the Mega Drive version was awesome, and not much different to the arcade.... a good era for gaming 😇🕹️👌
I hadn't realized that Strider (aka Aragorn II, son of Arathorn, Elessar and heir to the throne of Gondor) was involved in a Russian counter-strike. I guess you learn something new every day
Haha very true... that's some Title he has too! 😆🕹👌
My first Commodore game. Well, arcade version is great.
Yeah the Arcade version is one of my all time faves from the 80s 😇🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer For me, Strider comes just after Rainbow Islands 💕
Rainbow Islands is on the Channel, but I've only covered the Amiga version for now 😇🕹👌
Such gorgeous sprites ... I don't mind if it is a let down, have to play it. Thanks for unearthing & the great review!
Great game in the arcades, brings back a thousand memories playing as a kid. The C64 port wasn't brilliant but still like you say the graphics were very good 😇🕹👌

I actually never played the C64, NES, or Amiga versions of this, though I did have the Tiger handheld
I loved those tiger handheld games, I'd usually always get one for Christmas as a kid 😇🕹👌 great memories
I had that one in some big Capcom collection box. I got stuck in it rather early. Couldnt figure out what to do.
Was really tough on the C64. A shame it felt like the whole game slowed down in places.. still, a very recognisable character is Strider 😇🕹👌
I enjoyed this conversion, but my ages was in single figures so what did I know?!?!
I too was in single figures when this was released. We old dude 😪 😆🕹👌
Never played this thankfully but played alot on the mega drive, even that had a bit of slowdown in places . Not sure if i still own it.🤔
The gravitational ball level was amazing when I first saw it in the arcades, am glad they left that part in the Mega Drive version. Great game 😇🕹️👌
When did Tiertex ever make a good game?
Errr... Bob The Builder for the PS2! Haha 😇🕹️👌
Great review bro, but yes the sega genesis version was a lot better on the eyes. Not sure if youre taking requests but id love to see you review "the captive" by Mastertronic
Thats a beautiful game, I'll certainly add it to the list 😇🕹️👌
I mean.... I played it a lot and tried to enjoy myself.
It came with really high hopes, alas... it was assigned to Tiertex 😇🕹️👌
First level is not the Red Square in Moscow
You're right - I checked the level locations... The Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (called "St. Petersburg" during the arcade game's attract sequence), the Siberian Wilderness, the Aerial Battleship Balrog, the Amazonian Jungle, and the Grandmaster's lair itself, the Third Moon 😇🕹️👌
I enjoyed this game although it seldom loaded for me
I had a few games like that, I'd turn the datasette upside town... fiddle with the azimuth head alignment... run the cassette head cleaner... and every 1 in 100 times it'd load. So much easier now with the .tap .d64 files! 😇🕹️👌
C64 version was better than the other ports at the time, imo.
True, some very decent sprites 😇🕹️👌

Crazy how they kept going that long when many of the better companies folded long before huh 😇🕹👌
Couldn't agree more. The C64 version was terrible, the only interesting thing for me was the version I had was the first ever single file multiload crack I'd ever seen.
