What's your earliest memories playing arcade games? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1983: tinyurl.com/1983-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
I agree... it used to blast my eardrums! Theres an arcade club near me and there are literally around 4 or 5 Defender machine side-by-side!! Gahaha. ruclips.net/video/6PmRNlqIdFY/видео.htmlsi=Rnn5P94m2e1hCZ0V&t=235 😇🕹️👌
You always knew if an arcade had a Defender cabinet in it. It was LOUD as all hell and in your face. PEW PEW BLAM POW! Everything an 80's kid could have wanted. If only it weren't so utterly, brutally difficult.
I remember those arcade hall days well... the constant blaring of noise and the reverberations through your chest as you'd walk past some massive speakers.... smoke filled rooms full of spotty teenagers and arcades machines with several greasy haired kids surrounding to see what was going on. Packed to the rafters. Great days 😇🕹️👌
The first game i ever "clocked" was Defender on my Atari 2600. Absolutely loved playing whilst also annoying my sister that i tied our 14 inch colour tv so she couldn't watch Grange Hill. Still annoyed it went from level 99 back to level 1 and started again.
The space theme reminded me, you absolutely have to review Cosmic Tunnels for the C64. It’s one of my all-time C64 favorites, atleast back then it was sooo great!
I played a bunch of this one back in the day! The difficulty level was certainly high and it was more fast-paced than many of the other games in my collection.
I’ve been watching the old Video Game Show from the 1980’s called Starcade out of California. You compete against another person using arcade games and the ultimate prize for each episode was winning your own full size arcade game. Defender & Stargate (Defender II) was used quite frequently on this show.
A while back I fixed an arcade PCB for Defender which took months and then when I finally got it working I put up a play vid on my YT channel. This one was the rare Taito version. Same game but the hardware was a lot nicer and integrated onto only 2 PCBs. The original is basically early 80's Williams pinball hardware with multiple boards (5 or 6 iirc) which was very unreliable.
Eugene Jarvis is still making arcade games with the company Raw Thrills, interestingly enough. I enjoyed Defender on the Atari 2600, and I played a later C64 game that shared the name but not many of the mechanics (Defender 2? Defender 2000? Don't remember... Pretty, but kind of shallow, whatever it was.) But the all-buttons control scheme of the arcade was a bit much for my brain to wrap itself around as a child. Still admire its design, though.
Superb design and excellent control mechanism in the arcades.. could get a little confusing when the action ramps up, but really encouraged us players to keep our reflexes at their sharpest. Pure thrilling game for such an early title 😇🕹️👌
What a classic! This is a game I definitely grew up with! I remember seeing this in the arcade and was amazed! However, this was still at a time when they haven't figured out that people prefer a joystick for movement over buttons... making the arcade version a bit clunky to play (in my opinion). My first home version of the game was on the Atari 2600, which was great... but had some weird graphical issues like flickering aliens and this weird effect in which your ship disappeared every time you would shoot. I guess the system couldn't handle both the ship and your shot on the screen at once. LOL! Then I got it for the C64... and that was so much better than the Atari 2600 version! I played that game so much on my C64!
If i ever find Bally Midway's legendary Arcade classic DEFENDER - and especially on the cartridge - i will retro crying of happiness 😹👍🕹️. I still have that game in a compilation called MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES for the PlayStation 2 😺👍🕹️. And who remembers DATASTORM on the Amiga 😺👍🕹️?
I never played the official Defender on the c64, but I gave Dropzone plenty of goes. However, Annihilator by Mike Wacker was my go to Defender clone. What a great game that was, not.
It's sad when you think about it, that 90% of the best video games were made before 1984...everything after that was mostly rinse and repeat with slightly better graphics....
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Yeah, only real innovation I can think of after 8 bit is FPS shooters like Doom etc. Though there were already efforts at 3D games even during the Commodore years. You did a good video on Sentinel and Castle Master which showed what was doable back then. It was just a little bit too much for the base hardware though. Certainly not as playable as Wolfenstein or Doom were on 16bit systems. But by then a 16bit setup cost quite a bit more than a C64. I remember paying over £100 for the extra RAM for my 386 Zenith PC just to be able to play Doom.
CCG how do you make a video every day! Does it not take you long I thought it would take longer 😳. Especially with the editing. I've just realised you stopped your subtitles! I guess that reduces the time
I was disappointed with the Atarisoft port. The landers looked blocky, your space fighter didn't look right, and the pixel "explosions" were puny. I would have been so much happier if I knew about Guardian back in the day. As it was, I mostly played a couple Defender type games popular here in the USA - Protector II and Repton (not that Repton, a completely different Repton by Sirious software). Protector II looks pretty cool, and it's got this whole complex game "story" where you must try to figure out the best way to save the people. But it's marred by the ridiculous difficulty lining up picking up people. Repton has a sluggish frame rate, but otherwise it's pretty cool and stylish. Just a bit samey with the color scheme, though.
Many people mentioning 'Guardian' but like I mentioned, there were so many iterations and 'clones' of the original... I guess this version was the only one I knew as a kid and I loved it 😇🕹️👌

Played Pong in Airport
Depth Charge in a proper arcade
Radar Rat Race, Ad Infinitum, Raid on Bungeling Bay - those are the first three that come to my mind.
The sounds were incredible in the arcade and it was always the loudest cabinet. Absolute classic game
I agree... it used to blast my eardrums! Theres an arcade club near me and there are literally around 4 or 5 Defender machine side-by-side!! Gahaha. ruclips.net/video/6PmRNlqIdFY/видео.htmlsi=Rnn5P94m2e1hCZ0V&t=235 😇🕹️👌
Dropzone was THE clone... nothing beats it.
Possibly the greatest game of all time
Yeah, a classic - for those who haven't seen the review on that game yet check it out here - ruclips.net/video/0RtRUCc5SDo/видео.html 😇🕹️👌

What a classic. Funny, I mostly played the clone "Guardian" instead of the original Defender.
Many loved that one too - nothing will ever beat the original arcade version though 😇🕹️👌

Ahhh Grange Hill, I loved that as a kid haha. I can't believe they made a game about that show too... eishh 😇🕹️👌
The space theme reminded me, you absolutely have to review Cosmic Tunnels for the C64. It’s one of my all-time C64 favorites, atleast back then it was sooo great!
Definitely get round to that someday too 😇🕹️👌
I had this game for Atari 2600 when I was very young
Good memories - simpler times, when games were pure addictive and not too complicated to pick up and play 😇🕹️👌
For a "simple" game, it does have a style that seems to make it timeless.
Yeah I agree - a 'no gimmick' game, pure action 😇🕹️👌
I played a bunch of this one back in the day! The difficulty level was certainly high and it was more fast-paced than many of the other games in my collection.
Mega fast for it's day and that was the appeal. Also the sound effects when shooting the enemies.... iconic game 😇🕹️👌

You compete against another person using arcade games and the ultimate prize for each episode was winning your own full size arcade game. That would be the dream, to win a full sized arcade machine of Defender! Mind you, it was pretty noisy... wife would kill me 😇🕹️👌
Ah, now we're talking. Defender and all it's clones were most always very entertaining games.
Absolutely - easy to pick up and play. The days when just competing for the highest scores were the only objectives 😇🕹️👌
This is like Mission Alphatron for the MEMOTECH MTX512 coded in a mix of MTX BASIC + Assembly language.
Now THATS a rare machine! I've only actually ever seen one Memotech in the flesh in all my years 😇🕹️👌

Nice job! Just checked out your video but wouldn't allow me to comment - another superb arcade machine rescued from the brink. Bravo 😇🕹️👌
A really cool mix of Zaxxon and Choplifter 😊
it was made before either of those and the gameplay is nothing like either of those.
Hmmm... conceptually possibly - I see what you mean with maybe Choplifter, having to rescue people etc 😇🕹️👌

If i ever find Bally Midway's legendary
Arcade classic DEFENDER -
and especially on the cartridge -
i will retro crying of happiness 😹👍🕹️.
I still have that game in a compilation
called MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES
for the PlayStation 2 😺👍🕹️.
And who remembers DATASTORM on the Amiga 😺👍🕹️?
I always preferred stargate, first played it on the vic20 but I think it was called star defence by kingsoft . 16k of memory needed😂
The game was made by Williams. Not Bally Midway.
Yes but Williams Electronic Games Inc made the acquisition of Bally Midway in 1988. Then they released the compilation under that umbrella 😇🕹️👌
Datastorm is a great game! I remember it being super fast too 😇🕹️👌
My brother prefers Stargate - couldnt get him off that machine! 😇🕹️👌
Have you played Guardian published by Alligata.
I think it’s a superior Defender.
Agree!
Yeah like I say in the video, there were many clones 😇🕹️👌
I never played the official Defender on the c64, but I gave Dropzone plenty of goes. However, Annihilator by Mike Wacker was my go to Defender clone. What a great game that was, not.
Dropzone is a class game indeed! So many clones... be interesting to do some sort of poll to see which one was best 😇🕹️👌
It's sad when you think about it, that 90% of the best video games were made before 1984...everything after that was mostly rinse and repeat with slightly better graphics....
There were few unique games made after the 8-Bit era as a whole 😇🕹️👌

😇🕹👌
I had Defender 64 from Interceptor Micros - it was not as good as this version!
I had that one too, many years later - I did prefer this Atarisoft version too 😇🕹️👌
i thought arcades were in the past along with strip clubs. Must be the puritanical overseers who made it so locally. Dammit.
Where theres joysticks, theres money 😇🕹️👌
CCG how do you make a video every day! Does it not take you long I thought it would take longer 😳. Especially with the editing. I've just realised you stopped your subtitles! I guess that reduces the time
I appreciate that the work put into the channel is being acknowledged as is the support of you guys, which continuously drives me on 😇🕹️👌
That's good! We all like the videos it's a nice short burst of nostalgia every day 😎. Thanks for your reply!

the title is a hard on, non-english, it sounds like 5 different things at same time, are you deffing-her or de-fend her, or deffy end 'er
Deee-Fen-Durrr 😇🕹️👌
