One of your best videos, thanks! Special 👍for showing the Finnish Army and reservist habit of taking hat or cap off when eating! I still follow that rule on my on own hikes after 42 years of my conscript service and after it on several refreshing excercises.
I have the defence 1 as my summer bag and the defence 4 (rated to -15) as a winter one, but in my experience the def1 is way warmer related to its rating. Somehow the 4 is too loose and the air gets pretty cold inside it towards the morning, more so than with the def1. Great vid. This gives me confidence to go try my def1 in subzero temperatures👌
Interesting to hear. Personally, the biggest downsides are the lack if wind baffle and poorly shaped hood, so warm air escapes rather easily from the inside of the bag when ever I turn sides.
@@TaivalOutdoors yeah, that was the problem with the def 4 especially, since it’s supposed to be used in very cold temperatures. I actually made a heat lock myself to the def4 and now it works much better. It is only made of polycotton fabric with a thin layer of padding inside and a tightening chord to tighten it around my neck. It is only attatched to the lining fabric of the bag, but it keeps the air from moving out, so it is good enough. I tend to poke my head outside the def1 and rely on some thick merino buff and beanie, but that only works above 0 temperature though. Maybe I will switch my def4 to a Never Summer in the future, since moisture is not that big of a problem in -5 and below winter temperatures.
@@TaivalOutdoors actually, some people use an elastic band (used to pack rollable sleeping pads) to put around their neck on top of the sleeping bag to make it tighter above the shoulders. I haven’t tried that and it sounds like a hassle to me to be honest. But maybe it could work. It’s a shame Carinthia doesn’t have heat locks on any of their bags… seems weird to me
@@kasperkumpulainen8505 Hmm, if I'd have to guess, they didn't include those in order to make the product as simple as possible (and to cut down costs?) for military use.
Was orange color cover because of hunting season? If was, I think that's smart. Yesterday I ran 18km in dirt roads and there were plenty of Deliverance -movie type of characters around woods carrying their riffles. I wish I had had some orange color on me.
Yes, that was the reason. Walking in the woods and close to fields in the morning hours during the hunting season is best do be done wearing orange, just in case. I also got a bright orange MTB helmet last year for the same reason.
I sewed a thick fleece pillow cover that goes over my air pillow with three snaps. I can pull it off for laundry and the pillow stays where I put it when in use. I used to have to chase my pillow around all night. I also have to say what a well behaved dog Rokka is in the video. I knew a Malemute who used to bite his owner.
What phone did you get? A really enjoyable video, as always! Edit: I am really looking forward to the layering video because even though I have been an "outdoorsy" person for the last 3 years, I still find it difficult to find the right mix of clothes to be comfortable while hiking and not sweating too much in temperatures around 0°C and below. Especially if wind gets introduced to the weather mix.
iPhone 13, my first Apple phone. Wanted to see what's all the fuzz about. Thanks for the comment, I'll be sure to tough on wind chill in that layering video as well!

This is pretty cool (pun intended). Nice dog you have there to take on your trips.
Thanks! Yeah this is our second dog and we chose this breed specifically so that I can have some company with me during my camping trips.
@@TaivalOutdoors Good choice. My dog could not handle those early winter outdoor temps for the whole day and night.
Why dont you let your dog run a little free without that line?
I wish I could, but it's pretty much forbidden in Finland.
@@TaivalOutdoors oh what a pity…well maybe you can do it when the camera is off ;)
Ihanaa, sudelta tuli heti aamusta pusuttelut🐺💋😘❤😂

That fleece cover is a good idea 👍
What a great video. Very interesting and your country looks very beautiful to a Canadian. Cheers.
Thank you. I hope to visit the great Canadian wilderness some day.

good video!
Thank you!

Which jacket is that ?
UF PRO Striker XT in Concamo.
