My question to those who ask "WHY" put a gearbox in an electric car is..... WHY NOT? I mean, seriously, what's the problem with an electric motor driving a gearbox? I think that's a plus to it's power. I'm really excited to see the end-result of this project.

It's alive! If I understand correctly it's controlled by an Arduino, that's awesome!
Yes lets take right now one metric ton vehicle and put arduino of all things in charge of throttle and steering.. what ever could go wrong. I do not trust cybertrucks drive by wire setup or there being electric motor in the steering wheel at all, let alone this death trap. Guess its a blessing that this thing wont be in the road, but then why even make it if you cant use it?

To use an Auto Transmission you'll need to fit an external pump to maintain Fluid pressure when the Motor isn't spinning. Great work so far

Hiya, great project, an auto transmission is largely hydraulic, it needs at least 750 rpms at the oil pump ( front cover of box behind convertor) at all times for the hydraulics internally to function and engage the bands and clutches.

I hope you can find space for a charge controller and a couple of solar panels so that when you get in a bind after running out of charge... say a traffic jam or tie up, you can just give the solar panels and charging system some time in the sun and EVENTUALLY get it running again... or at least enough of a charge to get to a place of safety. Perhaps the solar panels can be permanently mounted externally, like on the roof... but if you hadn't planned on that then maybe you can find a place to stow a few portable solar panels. IDK... I watched the first part of this so long ago... and I'm just now watching this part. Very cool project! Thanks for sharing it with us.

man these guys are awesome, tho gotta agree that the gearbox isnt really necessary since its electric it'll just add weight which will add stress in the motor

After seeing all this extra work, I might have just used a gas/hybrid engine. These batteries can be very dangerous and a huge fire hazard. Please be safe fellas. Love the enthusiasm, but i wouldn't over complicate things too much. Best of luck and i cant wait to see what both vehicles end up looking like

If you use auxiliary pump to maintain minimal pressure to the automatic transmission it will stay in gear. With ICE the rpm remain above 500 rpm and maintains pressure to stay in gear

Auto trans has to maintain a constant line pressure witch means the motor has to contently turn a minimum rpm unlike a manual trans ..Great job want to see more

I was watching a hub rebuild of a rear motorcycle wheel and they had some energy transfer parts inside - even with a modern motor/gearbox/drivetrain, regular motorcycles still need a little help built in so they don't shred everything from the stress forces of the instantaneous torque they are able to produce, which is even "more" instantaneous with electric motors.
Great build, this is going to be pretty awesome.

I like the idea of having the fluid coupler for dampening. The transmission functions based on having a 5-800 minimum input shaft RPM. Is there a way to have the electric motor idle at 500RPM at all times when the system is on?

The axles will fail really fast with the weight of the battery pack only. Turning circle looks like a laugh. Look at Mercedes Sprinter 316D rear wheel drive for ideas on how much wheel angle you need in a van. Simplify everything, and spread it out front and back, no need to put everything in the front. An automatic transmission would work fine, but a working one with enough oil and electronic selector between 1 and R. The torque converter will help with heavy loads + when pulling a trailer. Do not weld or grind anywhere near you batteries. Treat batteries like they are bombs, so welding spatter or grinding sparks can cause big problems. Those Nissan battery modules have open holes to the cells themselves, so the potential for issues from the little bits of metal aren't just a potential issue while they are hot. Vibration and tiny flexing of the pack during use along with the expansion and contraction of the cells during use as the status of charge changes can cause small bits of metal to make a hole in a cell which is the beginning of a catastrophic failure.

Do you still have the torque converter in there?
That would explain why you're not moving until you get up to X number of RPMs.
PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox etc controllers all suffer from "stick drift" at some point. Once this happens, the joysticks will suddenly get stuck in an "ON" state or lose connection that you cant fix without changing out the potentiometers. Even then, the potentiometers in these controllers have a finite number of rotations they can handle before they wear out. Using a PS4 joystick like the one you have shown for your acceleration or steering would have disastrous or even deadly consequences if the vehicle was in motion. Stick drift can happen at anytime and even the latest PS5 controllers started to experience it after only a few months of use. If you are determined to control this vehicle with a joystick, it would be wise to use an electromagnetic joystick or linear hall effect sensors. More reliable and safer.

I would love to be involved with this project with you guys. I'm confused as to why the auto box didn't work, also maybe the brakes need to turn off the motor when applied or else they will be fighting the motor and trying to stop the weight of the beast. Loving the welding and fabrication work. Can't wait to see the final product.
