  • So there was, in 2nd century BC Egypt, an indisputable, multicultural sharing of religious ideas between Jews, Greeks, and Egyptians. How should that fact influence how we evaluate Joseph Smith’s interpretations of the Abraham facsimiles in general and individual hieroglyphics on the facsimiles specifically? On a related note, some of Joseph’s descriptions of Facsimile 2 contain temple themes, saying that more will be revealed about those in the temple. Can Egyptologists today read those hieroglyphs, and are they actually connected in any way to what we learn about in our modern temples? Also, Dr. Robert Ritner is an Egyptologist who has critiqued LDS scholarship on the book of Abraham. Has he been adequately responded to? And finally, what are the top three most solid intellectual evidences for the book of Abraham having ancient connections which Joseph Smith could not have known about? In today’s episode of Church History Matters, we dive into all of these questions and more with Dr. Kerry Muhlestein, an Egyptologist and scholar on the book of Abraham.

This was so good! I love Kerry Muhlestein! He's so good at explaining complex ideas in a way that simpletons like myself can understand. I love that he is unafraid to say when he doesn't know or understand something. And lastly, he's just so darn polite.

Good brothers: These episodes are so deeply helpful. Thanks utterly much. The value of _faithful perspective_ and _faithful_ Saint scholars like Kerry Muhlestein and John Gee are mana to the Faith.
They contrast to the sellout-secular-liberal Church History Department and JS Papers enclave, with their inviting acidic critic Brian Hauglid as an oracle in their Book of Abraham volume. Academic gimmick and betrayal.

Great interview. You brought up the idea that possibly Joseph haven’t been in the past they were wrong. The concern one could have is the other revelations or commandments, or that were revealed to Joseph to the same standard could be applied. This is concerning because of the manner in which some of these revelations affected the lives of so many individuals, physical and spiritually traumatic ways.

Kerry comes across slightly better, logically, than he does in other places, as far as his controversial approach to start with faith (when speaking as a expert or academic) and take everything in from the stance of a believer. His work/views seem more aligned with a cultural anthropologist IMO.

Hahaha. This is great stuff. Rittner was incredible. The book of Abraham is problematic. We see how we try to change how it was translated and goal posts keep moving.

@@weightelk I believe that is true. I think we get caught up in making new ideas up to make something that looks false become more compelling. Its fun to think about how all our lives we thought certain truths of the church keep changing to make it work with the truth claims. Do you not see that happening?

I don't want to get any BYU Professor in trouble so I am deleting my comment. Its either critics or apologists no in between. Waste of time talking to LDS. As Kara Cooney once said to me in conversations with LDS scholars "I do not want to gaslight"

Thanks to Dr. Muhlestein and his honest and open comments. I'm glad that he didn't go on the program with John Dehlin and Corbin Volluz (aka RFM) as that would have been a waste of time as all they do is mud sling. Thanks again!

The Lord God allowed Joseph to BS you guys and you cannot figure that out. This is the theme of Dr Richard Ritner on the John Dehlin podcast. You know what his take is. If you have not listened to the podcast, you owe it to yourself to learn what the real world has concluded about the Book of Abraham (Breathings).

Robert Ritner was proven wrong. As Ritner and your anti-Mormon cult were comparing the facsimiles to the explanation and expecting correlation.

On the other hand you did not listen to this podcast did you??? The bottom line is that none of these things will be cut and dried for the simple reason that faith is required by God and faith requires a certain amount of uncertainty! I know that drives ya''ll crazy because it sounds like a copout!! I could tell you that the reality of these things can be known by revelation through prayer but I know you will make fun of that idea! Regardless of what you think about Joseph Smith and the translation process the text itself is absolutely incredible! My final comment is on your use of sarcasm. I have learned in my 74 years in mortality that people who use sarcasm in their speech or writing cannot be trusted as a reputable source for truth!

You do not have anything positive to offer us, nothing uplifting, nothing with any light or truth!! Just tear down everything you are angry about! Why on earth would anybody listen to you??!!
