A quote from Lin-Manuel Miranda about this song. Makes me love it even more. "I’m the baby of the family. I have a sister who’s six years older, and she got a raw deal. That song is my love letter and apology to my sister for having it easier. I watched my sister deal with the pressure of being the oldest and carrying burdens I never had to carry. I remember my parents woke my sister up to put together a He-Man playset for Christmas before I woke up. They wanted it to be fully assembled when I woke up on Christmas morning. I put all of that angst and all of those moments into Luisa"

I read an article somewhere that Luisa's merch is outselling Isabella's and Disney is shocked by it. They thought because Isabella was classically beautiful, that children would naturally gravitate toward her. After seeing this song and witnessing how strong, powerful, but also soft and vulnerable Luisa is, I don't think Isabella ever stood a chance against her. Children are far more perceptive than we give them credit for and the adults that watched (either because they have children or just love Disney) understood the value of Luisa's words and responsibilities. Luisa is a beautifully written character, and I hope that Disney has learned that we need more characters like her.

    • @marajones1828

I teach 3-5th grade its amazing to see how much these kids relate to Luisa's character. So many of my students are 8-10 but have lots of home responsibilities and are always taking care of their younger siblings. Remote school, I had kids with their baby siblings on their lap. I have one student in 3rd who is bigger than all the other students, she's built strong, taller than all the boys and everything, and sometimes the boys make fun of her for it, call her fat and to combat it she puts her an even tougher front. She'll lunge at them and threaten to smack them but she's literally the sweetest and such a hugger and watching her take care of and protect her friends reminded me of how gently Luisa takes care of Mirabel. I love that my kids have a character like Luisa to see and relate to. These kids are young but they see a lot, understand a lot and feel a lot and I'm glad the movies give them the space to process these emotions.

I mean both Luisa and Isabela's characters were gonna see some oddness because Disney has both never had a buff character like Luisa but also never had as dark-skinned "princesa" character as Isabel (even more so than Tiana and Isabela's merch is actually for some reason darker than in the movie) so they both overcame a lot for the love and we should give them both credit.

I’m an old lady, but I wanted to comment on this social shift: there’s a dozen popular reaction videos of young men who are brought close to tears by an animated movie. That didn’t exist when I was young, and I am so happy to see young men unencumbered by showing emotions.

    • @el_kitteh720

Luisa’s character growth, about having to be strong and the related pressure is a mirror to the societal pressure given to traditional male gender roles. By the end, she comes to term with the fact that she also needs to rest and that she shows emotions too. This is the shift you are referencing to with your observation of young men. Emotions are not weakness and strong people are allowed to self care too.

Luisa is a middle child and its very accurate to many middle children. The middle child doesnt seem to have much pressure on them but thats because they dont feel like they can show it. Oldest and youngest children also have pressure but the middle children are forgotten a lot and people forget to point out that oldest children are rewarded when they do something good and comforted when they mess up. Youngest are rewarded when they do good and are also comforted when they mess up and if theyre in the middle they are told that they are still doing good. Middle children are rewarded when they do good and some are just ignored because the parents are too busy telling the oldest how proud they are. And when we mess up our parents tell us they know its hard but our older siblings can do it so we should be able to also.

I think a lot do, actually, in several ways. This can be applied to home (I'm pretty sure there's more families where the child has more pressure than what's healthy for them than there aren't), school (because it has no regard for the fact you like having a life outside of it), being an older sister that takes all the responsibility, the person that does everything, and - this one particularly hits home for me - being the emotional support in the family, if not one of the big ones. Kids are durable, yes, but they feel that pressure as much as anyone, and they can be pretty good at hiding it. Granted you might be talking about like toddlers and I'm talking about 6 - 12 year olds (past that is teens) so 😅

The only difference Is that when I was a child i just enjoyed those cartoons, now I enjoy them and then I like to dig deep inside to find meanings, technic aspects and culturale references. But everytime someone get to know i am a cartoon lover they always jump out with "arent you too old for cartoons?", "Cartoons are for children" and similia. I love how the lyrics of the verses, "Under the surface I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?" It makes her sound like she's clenching her teeth trying to express how much pressure she's in, making the song and the character even more relatable.

This song crushes me. At the end of the bridge, when she heads back into the chorus so quietly, there's this vulnerability, this *terror* in her eyes, and she looks at her little sister like she truly believes that this pressure that is crushing her will never, ever, ever, let her rest for a moment. The visual of her going from a free open sky to this cramped position in the shadows, staring out from under a rock, scared and young and fragile... It is, to me, the most powerful and genuinely painful part of the song. It hurts so much more for having shown a moment of freedom, and rest, and health... and then this return to the responsibilities that she should never have had forced on her. It's so good, but it hurts so very badly.

My hearts ACHES every time I watch it. The animation has come so far, but what stands out about it in THIS movie is the expressions _only in the eyes._ They're EVERYTHING.
And even when I'm singing this song in the car like every day, because I relate to it _so much,_ I can NOT sing the second half without belting it raw and hard-edged, anger and crying out in every note.
And I know it's the same for SO many people out there.
I read a tweet that said "Your oldest daughter is not okay, she's listening to Surface Pressure on repeat."
      That about sums it up.

One of the things I love about this song that no one seems to be talking about is the fact that it's a song sung by a female character, in a Disney movie, that is in an alto register!
That's kind of revolutionary, I'm not sure we've even had that before, the only other songs that comes to mind are poor unfortunate soul from the little mermaid 30 years ago, or possibly mother knows best from tangled. Both villan songs, it's awesome to hear a song sung in that register to portray strength instead of villany.
As someone who has a lower register singing voice and loves Disney songs I'm so happy to have another song that will more comfortably fit my voice. I love the villan songs but it's fun to be a hero every once in a while, especially as villan song are less common in Disney films now.

I absorbed all the pain and pressure and carried all the burdens to protect my sister. I’m 25 now and my sister is 20 and she still tells me all the time how she viewed me as more of her mom than a sister. It’s extremely hard and this song touched me deep into my heart and described exactly how I feel.

Her voice changes a few times in this song and it’s perfect. The verses and chorus she sounds kinda like she is flexing/tense. But then the bridge when she says “But wait!” She switches to a flowing, relaxed voice to reflect that she’s imagining being able to relax. Then it slowly tenses back up going into the chorus again. It’s subtle, but it’s very much intentional

It's not just the voice. The lyrics have more stressed words closer together during the verses and chorus, with drip drip drip being one of the most concentrated bits. The relaxed bit has the least number of stressed words per bar.
The other thing to note is that it is mostly using words that have the stress on the first part of the word. Like MIS-take. So it starts strong, then fades.

She’s very talented! but naturally being a young child, lacks the emotional ability to convey the actual concept and burden of responsibility and expectations. Which is good, because she’s 9 and if she felt she could resonate with the lyrics too much, then I’d be questioning her upbringing. She’s still a baby, and should be enjoying her carefree youth and not feeling pressured to uphold any hard standards. When she’s aged more and her voice matures and she truly discovers the meaning and genuine sentiment of the lyrics, then she will probably be able to evoke more expression and emotion into her vocal nuances so that it communicates the message and meaning of the song a little more. That’s just my opinion and observation though, doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong. I think she will go on to do amazing things.

What I find so interesting is that the strong sis, Luisa, took that "I have to stay strong" to an unhealthy level, but the act of admitting via this song that she feels crushed by the pressures is an enormous step forward for her in finding a healthy balance and not trying to pretend she has no flaws or weaknesses. Not only does this song absolutely bang, but it's a really important moment of character growth, and those two combined make me practically giddy whenever I hear it. This song is going on ALL of my playlists!

I love that they fought for Luisa's designed. I'm 100% sure it wasn't easy even when Disney was told it was based on the FIRST Colombian woman to win a gold medal in wrestling (or maybe it was just the first woman wrestler I can't recall right now) point is they fought and won and now we got a super strong looking Luisa that doesn't look like a Tomboy.

as an older sister i teared up the first time i heard this, because it hit so hard "see if she can handle every family burden" like damn. And just objectively, this is probably the best song imo bc this song keeps that same amazing energy, but unlike we don't talk about bruno, there is so much nuance of emotion and she carried this song by HERSELF, like that is crazy!!

What most people dont realise that everything being portrayed in these songs in “Encanto” are all based on real expectations and real family strains that most Colombian families have. For example, the older sibling is expected to carry the load of younger siblings as well as be successful to then take care of parents.
And so on, it shows Colombian culture so so well that as a Colombian is hits really close to home

I don't mean to undermine what you said. But this kind of culture is also prominent to Asian families if not maybe a large percentage of families in the whole world. Like as the oldest, you are already expected to be mature even at a young age :(

@@shaded_gentleman8363 Yes, in reality Encanto shows Colombian cultures beautifully. But, overall it encompasses family dynamics of People of Color in general. Because this is Blk families too. They did a great job with Encanto. The writers and team also consulted therapists when writing it.

I wasn't overly interested in seeing Encanto even while "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was blowing up, but I heard this song and like you said, it's just so powerful and relatable- and hearing how her voice strained, especially in that quiet verse, this song alone convinced me to watch the movie, and I love it even more now. Luisa is such an amazing, beautiful icon, not only because she is buff but because in this song she reveals that that's not all she is - and I've listened to this more than 50 times but still watching your analysis brought me to tears all over again. I'm glad you'll be watching this- it's definitely a movie I'd recommend to everyone just for the messages and emotions

The “who am I if I can’t carry it all” for Luisa is literal.
If you haven’t seen the movie, everyone in the family has special gifts (except Mirabell) and Luisa’s gift is strength, nothing is ever too heavy for her.

    • @tylersmith3533
      @tylersmith3533 2 года назад +1

It's literal on face value, sure, but the magic of this entire song is that it uses Luisa's real, tangible physical strength as a metaphor for her mental state.

  • @DragonTamerRi

When she starts that song with “that tough indestructible surface” and throughout the song she’s constantly standing between her sister and the dangers really drives home the fear and the sense of responsibility and pressure. She’s so acutely aware that if she falters it won’t be her who gets hurt and that is literally keeping her up at night. I cried and I am proud to cry for a song like this.
Which song I prefer changes based on my own mental and emotional state. They are both so incredible that it comes down to what song I need to listen to more than which one I want to hear.

He is a masterful storyteller and uses the music to build the character to be fully realized and relatable amd not just a shell. She is my favorite in this whole movie and i have watched it 3 times in 2 days. Lol. This song is the best one from the whole movie. LMM killed it with every aspect of this song. The first time I watched this movie, and heard this song, I had to pause it and cried for about 20 min. I never knew a song could LITERALLY explain every single doubt and dark feeling in my mind & heart that I've been battling for over a decade. Just the expectations and pressure put on people nowadays, especially the younger generations, is suffocating and so detrimental to mental health. I really appreciate Lin Manuel Miranda, the cast, and Disney for shining a light on such issues.

I relate to this song so hard, and that ‘drip drip drip’ line gets me every time.
I’m the youngest in my family, the baby, so my pressure wasn’t in being the oldest sibling that shouldered the burdens. Instead I was the only one who was neurotypical; both my older brothers were diagnosed with Aspergers at a young age. It was hard for them because of a judgemental world, it was hard for my parents who had judgemental siblings of their own, and it was hard for me because “She’s the normal one, what’s her excuse for acting up? She’s the normal one, she’s supposed to be the easy one.”
I had a tearful conversation with my mum as an adult about the fact that I didn’t feel like I could rely on her while I was a teen because it felt like she didn’t care about me. She admitted to me that she had no energy or ability to deal with my (very normal) problems growing up after she was done dealing with my brothers (not as normal) problems. She was just done with it by the time I hit puberty and started having my own issues.

Not only do you appreciate the nuances of vocal style to character type, but you completely get the impact of the words. This is the magic not only of Disney, but Lin Manuel Miranda.
