- In this video I replace the 25 year old CRT monitor in 'Milly', my 1994 Fadal VMC10 CNC machine! I show how to do all the wiring and how to do a super clean install of this inexpensive replacement monitor!

Command strips super for diy projects. Sometimes I feel guilty but they never failed me yet.
First time I've used them for something like that honestly, but they really make sense! They are high quality and easy to remove which is a big plus compared to the other types of double-sided adhesive!

Great video! Even if you aren't fixing a mill, lots of good info. I wonder if the more expensive panels have glass screens. That seems like it would be good to have on an industrial machine to prevent scratches.
Hey Tommy! The replacement monitor I fitted here actually has a glass screen, not plastic! From what I've seen they're very durable, no issues with scratching them when wiping them down or anything as of yet! The 'expensive' replacements honestly seem exactly the same, though a few of them come with a mounting cradle meant to replicate the CRT mounting locations, which honestly just seems unnecessary!
@@GoughCustom Sounds like a great deal then! An $800 replacement is bogus regardless of whether the cheap one was glass or plastic. Awesome you were able to find a cheaper option that fit like a glove.

Hey Grant! Thanks for the well wishes mate! I've been taking a break from 'online stuff' mainly because I actually bought a new house / property with a workshop on it in the middle of last year! 🎉 However the workshop building itself has needed a LOT more work than I initially anticipated, so all my time & money has been going into getting it fixed up!
I am getting fairly close. The "only" things left to do are: finishing in the storage room, grinding and epoxy coating the floor, and installing the electrical. However the electrical in particular is going to be fairly expensive, so I'm just taking my time for the moment!

Thanks! I actually have quite a bit of experience with electronics work, I used to build guitar tube amps when I was a kid and I have done a fair bit of electronics repairs and so on... Just takes time to learn all the little things as you work through projects!

Hi, it's a great video, congratulations, i want to do the same in a cnc mach 9 Romi, but the output signal of my machine it's separeate: video, Horizontal sync and vertical sync. My doubt is can i plug this signal like you in de vga conector or i need to convert de signal. The old monitor is a CRT monochrome monitor.
Clean job! not as cool as the green CRT but definitely more reliable
Yeah the old CRTs have a cool look, I did think about trying to make the text green (as the screen is color) but I didn't end up bothering too much lol

I don't own a Fadal Mill.
But I do have a Mazak Lathe that is still in it's Mission / Rebuild stage.
Currently fitted with a CRT Monitor.
Replacing the Monitor is something I Definitely want to do for all the obvious reasons 😁
Trying to find something that is not so costly as you mentioned is a big plus.
My Mazak Dealer does have a Genuine Replacement at a cost of around 2K.
Which is ok IF I owned a 300K Lathe.
But my machine like yours is a little older and 2K is a little too expensive for an older machine.
( it was sought of funny because I was at the dealer when asking about a replacement monitor, the sales guy had a look on his face as if to say 🤔I don't think this guy will buy it.
he is definitely right about that 😂)
The Monitor you chose is a not only reasonably priced but also improves the machines appearance.

Hello, did you notice the top line line of the display is cut off a bit when displaying the DRO? I’ve read fadal has modified the top 6 lines of the display and sometimes it gets cut off. Thanks!

Great Swap out Aaron. Clean and 20lbs lighter but will miss the green. Curious if your old screens had burns in the phosphorus? If not I'd find someone or fix it myself for nostalgia/Archival coolness. Honestly, I still have an original IBM XT with a 5mb Bernuolli drive and a CGA Card and Monitor (circ. 83') still sparked as of 18mo. ago...figured I'd donate it in another decade or give it to the grand kids to see where tablets came from. ;-P Thanks Aaron, always a treat and yes I noticed...thank you!
Hey PJ! Thanks again for your support! I do love the old green screens as well, but the new LCDs are just so much easier to read! Yeah the CRT did have burn-in as well unfortunately...
The old computers are really fun to see! I have a soft spot for old Apple Macintoshes. My first 'real' computer was a Macintosh LCII, though I had access to an Apple II, an atari and a Mac Classic earlier than that...
What's the reason for the hearing protection during this project? Is it just loud in the workshop? Also, I'm happy to see you can buy an LCD with a BNC connector still these days. That was a surprise to me. Cheers!
Partly habit, partly because they're bluetooth headphones as well so I use them to listen to music and answer my phone etc... Honestly I always have them on any time I'm in the shop, otherwise I'm always looking for them when I'm going to do something noisy, or I end up just leaving them off and doing harm to my ears, so best to leave them on all the time!

No, the remote control is only needed when first setting up the monitor. After that it just remembers the settings when turned on!

I think something like that every time I have to do a project like this lol... then I remember how much work it is just having one business! :)
Always hated that green screen on our fadal 4020 we used to have. It got so bad we actually had burn in on the screen from it being turned on for so long. It made reading the screen very difficult when there were burnt in characters on the screen.
Yeah they definitely get harder to read as they age! My main issue previously was that I like my shop really bright, and the screen wasn't that bright so it was hard to read!

What’s the input voltage of the old crt?
Is there a way to adjust screen alignment? I just put a super cheap monitor in my VMC40 and the bottom three menu items are not visible on the screen. I don't think this one is adjustable. Thanks for the video!
I have the same problem in my old Fadal (DC Motors) i tried to adjust with the diferent picture parameters of the lcd monitor but I couldn´t, i tried in my newest Fadal (AC Motors) and it works, I hope somebady could help us. Regards
@@icoaguilar750 I had to install the newest video card. I think it was the 1420-2 card that made it work. Now on my cheap monitor I am using now the top line isn't visible. I am getting one of these better monitors and they allow you to manually align it from there. A tech at ITS said that newer card is a must!
I haven't had to adjust the vsync that much so I can't really add anything here unfortunately. If you need to research it further 'vsync' is the term you need to look for, there's a timing element to the way the video signal works and if that is not being detected properly then the vertical and/or horizontal alignment will be off...
Fadal machine, based on welded steel frame (out of mild steel tubes)? Without cast iron?
It's largely welded steel, yes. The Table, Saddle and Head are all cast iron though, and the base is filled with concrete at the factory to reduce resonance.

Hey Richard! I have actually never stopped making knives, I just haven't done any videos on my day-to-day recently because I'm largely doing the same thing so it's a bit repetitive. I am definitely working on new designs, my main focus at the moment is on designing the production process for my kitchen knife design!

Are you ever going to have any of these knives for sale again to the public? I've been checking off & on for the last year on your website and they always say "sold out". If not, do you recommend any other knife makers with similar quality knives for sale that actually has products in stock?
Hey mate! I actually have knives for sale pretty regularly, at least one batch per 2-3 months, however outside of those windows the website says 'sold out' because I have a fair bit of demand and when I release a batch it usually sells out within 24-48 hours. You might have seen a prompt on my website to sign up for my mailing list? That is the best way to get one of my knives, because after you sign up I am able to send you a notification when there are knives available... Obviously this is not super clear though, so I will update my website with a note that explains the process a bit better. Cheers!

Sorry mate, it's going to be different on every machine. You will have to work out what format the signal is and what the connector is, then buy a monitor that's suitable...

I honestly probably could have fixed the old screen myself, usually with those old CRT screens as long as the tube is intact then it's a matter of replacing burnt out components like that big capacitor, cleaning things well, and maybe fixing a circuit board burnt trace or two if there was a short... However I just didn't think it was worth it. It would be a fun project but unfortunately I don't have any use for the finished product!
How did you connect the signal to the LCD?, you didn't show that.
Ah I guess I forgot to point out when I was doing that. At 10:02 you can see I'm plugging in the BNC connector which transfers the video signal. It just plugs right into the only place that matches!

Hey mate! Doing 'ok', the last 18 months has been a bit of a wild ride as renovating my new workshop building has taken a LOT more work / money / time than I really anticipated before moving... However I did just do a big pre-order of knives, updated the website, and I'm looking forward to getting rolling and making knives again, I really miss it!

@@Panzax1 I will definitely be posting a video when it's finished, I've been filming the whole process as I go... Yeah I had originally planned just to move one wall and install drywall in the new shop, but after opening up a wall I found a really bad mouse infestation and decided to gut the place and do all new insulation, vapor barrier, interior sheathing and then drywall. Has already paid off big time in terms of insulation as the building leaked like a sieve before...
You'll appreciate this I think given your background in renovations: I also found that the roof over the office area of the shop had 2x12 rafters on 24" centers with an unsupported span of 20', and we live in an area with a potential snow-load of 60lbs per sq foot 😭😳 I have no idea how that roof had not already caved in... The span calculators said the max span with that lumber should have only been 10' lol.
I jacked the rafters up, sistered each one with a fresh 2x12, then built a structural beam at the mid-point of the span and built columns in the walls underneath to carry the load down into the slab. The renovation was worth it just to find that potential huge issue I think! Glad it's fixed now...

Short of repairing the screen, buying a new CRT screen is VERY expensive these days, much more expensive than an equivalent LCD screen...
