Hi Joe. My 2 CD version was delivered by Amazon today. For some reason the big box is delayed until Monday. So not just the official GH site, Amazon US dropped the ball on the big box until Monday. At least I can play the 2CD version in the car this weekend. Can’t wait to play it
I received a message from George's website that a label was created Nov. 14. 2 1/2 days later tracking didn't show that USPS had received my order. I answered the email from George's site and explained the situation. The next day I received tracking info that my package was in Indiana (started from Texas). I've been seeing the package moving every day after that.
Looks great Mr.Mayo sorry to hear your deluxe edition has not shipped doesn't make sense why can't be shipped on time. The sound is very clear and crisp Dhani did a great job on remix and the packaging looks great! Wish Sail away Raymond was on the 2 cd set it is on RUclips sounds great! Nice unboxing Mr.Mayo and mini review!
It's always been a favorite of mine from first released on Apple Records, May 30th, 1973, so surprised the Single release did so well and the album went to Number One, the first solo Beatle to hit two number one albums consecutive. I played the Single and especially the album many times over the course of the summer of '73. I was struck by Harrison's clear voice, and now is more clear in 2024 is great news. The musicians really let loose on the Title track, and the messages with Be Here Now sets Harrison's new Priorities in his life.. The Spiritual emphasis more radiant than the darker All Things Must Pass, speaks about Death, this album speaks about Life eternal bliss in the NOW. Be Here Now is simplistic but complex, and George Harrison sang at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto Live and two days after at the Hockey game practice the speakers were still playing it, was a special moment for me. It's one of George's best compositions, well structured and is an anthem for Rock artists who were victims, like George over the plagiarism charge on My Sweet Lord. Glad you got the box set, this is well worth the price.
Thanks for your review. I received the super deluxe set on release day. Played both record and cd which sound great. You have to turn volume up for the record compared to cd. This new remix has made it my second fave George album. But totally agree with you about Be Here Now. Absolutely lovely. Don’t let me wait too long is great and hear the maracas more in this mix. And agree this is my go to version of this album.
I still play my original vinyl disc from 1973. This is my favourite George album after "All Things Must Pass" Harry Nillson did a lovely version of "That Is All"
Streamed on Amazon Music in Ultra HD and it sounded fantastic. I always thought this album was muddy and the prior remasters didn’t fix it. I will be purchasing the CD version for sure.
Hi Joe, I enjoyed this video. I Don't know if this may be the reason it is taking some time to get your shipment but here in MA, Mail is very slow, and I don't know the reason why?
I'm wearing the same t-shirt as you right now! Thank you for this interesting review. I bought the original album when it came out, and still love it. I remember reading a review that described it as Harrison's "Imagine," which I think wasn't far off.
This question is directed to those that are familiar with the original albums muddy mix. I’m hoping that has been corrected with the new remix. Thoughts?
I have the original vinyl release ( bought when the album came out -1973) and the one of the first remixed CD’s ( I think about 2010?). By far this is the best remix I have heard of pretty well any of the Beatles stuff (although to be fair I don’t buy that many remixes). But this one is great. George obviously didn’t like his voice and often vocals were buried ( or muddy) under a mix. He actually doesn’t have a bad voice and you can hear him a lot clearer here. Also the guitar (George is the only guitarist on this album) work is clear and a little more to the front. Also the piano (don’t know if it is Nicky Hopkins or Gary Wright) is beautiful. This is especially noticeable on the second CD of rough cuts or mixes. It really has brought to life a beautiful batch of songs. This guy (Paul Hicks) has done a fabulous job of this album. Dare I say it - better than George/ Giles Martin or even George himself.
Hello Joe! I bought the two cd set I enjoyed it. I was going to buy the super deluxe but went the 2 cd set i thought 174 was a bit much. So I am happy . Cd on the remix is great you can hear the instruments better gone is Phil Spector production Cd 2 the Alternate is great! The session outtakes is what I like . The work in progress! I hope you have a great weekend!
I thought the remixes were respectful. They kept to the original placement but the overall fidelity was enhanced. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the overall sound lacks top end. Like they took out all the noise. That’s the breath and energy that is important. But for all I know I’m just old and those top frequencies are just not registering with me.
Deep Blue was from 1971, this material is 1973. I realize that a past edition of LITMW included Deep Blue as another bonus, but it really didn't officially belong.
@@MeanMrMayo Yes, I have it on LITMW disc I bought a long time ago. They should have re-mixed it and included it as a bonus along with Bangla Desh. Just to have it.
Loved hearing your thoughts Joe. My quick analysis soon. To be honest I’m a bit underwhelmed by it. Nice packaging, but the extras seem “one listen and done” to me. Cheers 🎵🎼🎶🔥🍻🐿️🦃
@ unfortunately the corners of the outer box were a little damaged. But amazon shipped it in the manufacturer box. I honestly think this happened between the manufacturer and them as the shipping box showed no damage.
@@MeanMrMayo Amazon UK are shocking, half the time now box sets are sent in paper envelopes, guess what's going to happen? I will never use them again.
That really sounds like a good remix. I agree that a remix should help us to hear everything better, without eliminating instruments. Too bad they didn't get Paul Hicks to remix Mind Games (thought it mostly sounds better than the earlier versions). I look forward to hearing this new release, especially "Be Here Now." I'm glad that they did this.
Do you think you might try another seller after this kind of service? I always like to go official but so often get let down and even have to pay a little more. The odd time I have a little exclusive for enticement but nah can't be bothered anymore.
John and George were intelligent thinkers, As you rightly say Imagine is a reflective piece sadly many people don’t understand this ! I think solo beatles 1970-74 are really unvalued these days? Nice review I will go get this x thanks
Is that umg music in charge of distribution? I got the run around on the red and blue releases and finally received a week before Christmas. Nice run down on the music
Great Review Joe - makes me want to buy it or at the very least - listen to the entire album - I probably have not listened to it in full since when I bought it back in 1973 during my first year at college - My rant is they should release the 50th anniversary box set on the 50th anniversary, not the 51 1/2 year anniversary - so you may not be getting your delivery for another 6 months!
I’m not planning on getting the 2024 mix of Living in the Material World so watching this was quite informative. What’s your favourite song from the album, mine is Give Me Love.☮️❤️
If there was one solo release that deserved a remix, this was it. When I took it home and played it in 1973, I felt the mix was too muddy and like All Things Must Pass, George's guitar playing was too far back on my favorite songs. The next year when I blew my summer wages on a new JVC quad receiver system with 5 band equalizers and a eq bypass button that allowed my Wollensak 3M 4765 cassette deck to eq tapes, I tried my hardest to bring up George's guitar in "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long", but to no avail. That was my favorite tune on the LP.
I shopped around and picked mine up at a different shop.. payed about 50 bucks less and got it today! Hoping to listen to it this weekend.. Take Care joe..
That’s my bugbear about ordering from artists’ sites. I would prefer to buy from the artist, but they’re too slow to ship and they tend to charge more for postage. They should do better. Anyway, for some reason this album has never really done it for me - I prefer most of his other albums (yes, I know I’m in the minority here). I’m hoping this new mix opens it up for me.
I like the new mix, but I think the bottom could have been even more crisp, like at the beginning of Give Me Love which still sounds like mono! The album is great, it is great. It gets overshadowed by All Things Must Pass and The Bangladesh Live album, but we forget that it was number one in multple countries. It was a big hit. Besides that, it might be first album completely about God made by a pop/rockstar. Full pop/rock albums about God were just 3-4 years old at the time, but weren't done by well known musicians.
You skipped "The Day The World Gets 'Round" on the bonus disk. For me that is the highlight. Being an acoustic version, you can really hear the power of George's voice without getting drowned out, especially the part starting with "If you're the destructive kind...". He really belts out the lyrics and then afterwards softly sings the line "The day the world gets 'round".
I ordered mine from the Harrison site too. Like you, I'm still waiting...for the day the site gets 'round..to mailing out my order. Apologies to George. 😊
The remix is a major approvement on the original muddy, much too bassy mix which wasn't fixed by the previous remaster. I just wish they had added Deep Blue and Bangladesh as bonus tracks which are hard to get elsewhere.
Those two songs are 1971 and don't really fit here. I agree it would have been convenient having them here, though. Maybe they will be featured on the new Bangladesh release I hear is coming (though that is a concert album I never play, and the two bonus tracks will be the main reason I would want it).
Yes the album was released in 73, but was recorded between February 71 and March 73, but maybe these tracks will be remixed for inclusion on the upcoming re-release of Concert For Bangla Desh.
The only reason those 2 tracks were on previous reissues of this album is because there was nowhere else to dump them. They didn’t want to put studio tracks on the concert for Bangladesh cd reissue in 05, so the only other place to put them was on the material world reissue that came the following year in 06. A potential deluxe edition of concert for Bangladesh will no doubt include those 2 tracks. Especially since that will be more of an archival release rather than a straight reissue of the original album which the 05 version was.
