I am 58 and have decided to start playing the cello as achallenge to myself! I have a neuro problem affecting my arms and hands and cannot feel properly but refuse to give up. Hi! I'm 55 years old and have a relatively inexpensive electric cello on order. I have ZERO experience on stringed instruments. When I was a kid, I was intrigued with the cello, but started on trumpet in sixth grade. I did badly on trumpet and moved to the euphonium (baritone), in ninth grade through 2 years of college and did pretty well. During those years much of the music I played was originally written for bassoon or cello. A lot of baroque stuff by Bach, Telemann, etc... So this has always been kind of a "bucket list" thing for me, to learn cello. At least the simpler music for my own entertainment. Corona virus is now keeping a lot of us home and bored so this is a great chance for me to put my idle time to good use. Wish me luck!
@@MiloMcCarthyMusic So so ,..I managed a low squeak/groan so i guess that's something. Mostly very useful and informative so far, but at about 4:30 in I found myself wondering what sort of tree “balsam wood” comes from and why your cello bridge was made of it. I have yet to meet a fiddle family bowed instrument whose bridge wasn’t made of maple- it’s a fine grained wood with pretty high strength in compression, and allows a fairly thin cross section to transmit lots of energy to the spruce top of the instrument. Also, I’ve used a number of square and rectangular cakes of rosin, and it is entirely possible to rotate those to various angles while applying so as to avoid developing a groove in the middle. I like the idea of a circular cake, though, and may look for one of those if I ever go through enough rosin to need more.

I’m 14 and i’m aiming to start to learn the cello, with a teacher, in a few months. I want to enter a music college (you start college at the age of 16/17 in the UK) and the college I want to go to requires an audition where you play your instrument. I already play the guitar; i’ve had a facination with the cello and just orchestra instruments as a whole. Do you think ,with daily practice, I will be skilled enough to be accepted into the college? I was just wondering if 2 years of learning could give me a decent amount of chance and skill.
Jon Ken I think you could pull it off! Most music colleges require decent knowledge in music theory aswell, so if you’re educated in that aspect then the possibility is higher. So I would definitely give it a shot and apply to the college you want to go to, especially if you want to do music as a career.
Standardly, you want to tighten the bow hair to the width of your pinkie finger meaning that you can fit the tip of your pinkie in the space between the hair and the wood of the bow (But you dont ever want to actually touch the hair with your fingers, the oils can ruin the hair). Others use pencils or pens to measure the distance in the same way as their pinkies. That being said, when the bow hair is completely loose, you should see a slight arch in the wood of the bow. You want to try to make sure your bow, when tightened, keeps something of that arched form. The bow, when tightened, should not be completely straight like a pencil. Hope this helped :)

Hi Justin; I'm a beginner (74 years old, yikes) and I just used your instruction for positioning the cello. Everything was great, except the bottom peg pokes me in the head and forces me to tilt my head to the right. I know this will cause neck damage pretty darn soon. I noticed your peg was cut off. What's that about?
Guitar string sets are made up of 3 wound - 3plain steel OR 4 wound - 2 plain steel depending on the set diameters. Ive have played electric bass for a long time and I'm interested in Cello . I'm having trouble finding instruments better then the $200 specials and decent ones under $1000. Most of the " Student models " are way over $2000. In my area it seems that string shops are geared towards rentals and high end nothing to choose up to $1000
Hello. I am 35 and I decided to start playing the cello. I studies a music conservatory before (oh, another instrument :-D) and my hands are little bit accommodated to it (my wrist stands differently than others etc). When I try playing flat, m wrist is very uncomfortable and looks like broken. Can please anyone help? Thank you!

Hi, I'm playing around with my first cello, trying to tune the lowest string (C string) and I noticed that it seems much much lower and buzzy than your C string. Is the string too old? When I try to raise the pitch up an octave, it seems like it will break.
@@consordini6258 when i play it, it can play in a C but it is very low and buzzes, not with a nice tone. It sounds nothing like when you play the C in this video. I just received the cello in the mail. it is used and had strings, so just wondering what is the indicator of a string that is too old? or is it something about how I placed it or am playing it that would make it buzz like that?

Tightness of bow?
Just tighten it until you see it straighten up slightly and remember to loosen it when you are done so that you are able to play with bow again
How often do you need to re-hair the bow? How can you tell when it’s necessary.
i m 20 years old i want to learn to play cello but i m poor and very busy in engineering is it too late if i start after 2 years or from now will i be able to ever play hans zimmer work.😭😭😭😭
I have always loved the cello but I have zero experience with any instrument, I'm 29 and Ive really been considering trying to learn, but I'm afraid it might be too late to start, especially since I know absolutely nothing about music or how to read sheets etc.
In my area it seems that string shops are geared towards rentals and high end nothing to choose up to $1000
Im 32 never played instrument or ever learned music . Can I start ? 😅
Absolutely!
Hello. I am 35 and I decided to start playing the cello. I studies a music conservatory before (oh, another instrument :-D) and my hands are little bit accommodated to it (my wrist stands differently than others etc). I can find out whether the hair should be placed on a string flat while plaing or whether it can be little turned out (playing more by the edge of the hair). When I try playing flat, m wrist is very uncomfortable and looks like broken. Can please anyone help? Thank you!
nice tutorial
I noticed one of the peg is shorter. How did you do that?
am trying to learn Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007: I. Prelude on my cello
Oh my gosh justin!! 😍
I’m 16 and play the violin and when I was 12 I was actually going to play the cello so now I’m thinking on trying cello cause I have wanted to for a while now
Hi, I'm playing around with my first cello, trying to tune the lowest string (C string) and I noticed that it seems much much lower and buzzy than your C string. Is the string too old? When I try to raise the pitch up an octave, it seems like it will break.
Hi, can you please give more details?
@@consordini6258 when i play it, it can play in a C but it is very low and buzzes, not with a nice tone. It sounds nothing like when you play the C in this video. I just received the cello in the mail. it is used and had strings, so just wondering what is the indicator of a string that is too old? or is it something about how I placed it or am playing it that would make it buzz like that?
thanks for the help
Happy to help!
I just started cello your just like my cello teacher I have a cello teacher teacher tho
