That’s what I love about morally ambiguous characters - suddenly they surprise when they do the opposite of what we expect. Big Mom may be a tyrant, but as an orphan herself and a mother, child abuse is where she draws the line.

Except for the children she has herself which she bullies, punishes and and literally kills, being Pudding, Snack and that one dude that tries to calm her down respectivly.

This just shows how well developed Oda's villains are. They are very multilayered and not just outright evil. Big Mom isn't just evil, she has her own sense of justice that is warped. She wants to make the world a nice place but only by doing It her way by ruling over everyone. She protects people but only if they have given her something in return but also if they are not useful in the way she wants like Zues for example she will get rid of them.

When she is treated with love and respect by a village especially when she bonded with a child to her they are worth protecting . Anime always does it better. You should have seen the reactions of most folks when Oda drew this. They were fuming and baby rage mad about it. I thought it was completely fine because it seemed to stay consistent with her character

Yes, while she is emotionally abusive to her own children and the leader of a very imperialist nation, Big Mom is consistent in that she does think a leader should ensure the safety of their subjects. While they occasionally have to deal with Mama's hunger urges, the citizens of Tot Land are still relatively safe compared to virtually anywhere else in the New World.
Well you just have to look at their territories to gain an understanding of this. Wano is 90% wasteland and polluted land thanks to the weapon factories, while the entirety of WCI is populated with happy people, living in candy-themed homes. Huge difference.

I always hoped Big Mom would be redeemed in some way as the story went on. Her backstory is pretty sad. Grim, but sad. She's done a ton of terrible things but she started as a blank slate as a kid that clearly loved her parents that abandoned her, and mother Carmel who was going to sell her. And all the other children in the orphanage with her. I just think back on that scene where she accidentally killed the bear and the wolf because she wanted them to stop fighting, not because there was any malice there. Then Streusen came along when she was at her lowest and...well, that was that. I get that she's rotten to her kids (in some cases) but she never had a decent parental figure herself. If she had, she probably would have turned out a lot differently. I do hope Oda gives her at least one more redeeming moment as the story comes to a close.
Redeeming her would be boring because even if she's an antagonist with a tragic backstory her character can't turn into an allie because it would ruin all the development that her tragic backstory made her

It’s actually really funny as to how Page One is being treated as Oda’s literal punching bag. First he gets mopped by Sanji, then gets pricked in the face by Nami & Usopp, and finally gets one shot into oblivion by big mom. On top of that he gets bullied by his own sister 💀💀

@@tajaemartin2251 but in wano what there haki is called ryuo plus it’s different from regular haki making it pack a punch more than normal but they also infuse it with the color of supreme king in which only a few strong men can do that in which pretty sure big mom just did as well
@@sternamise8874 ryou is regular haki. The people in wano just call it that simular to how the skypian people called ken haki mantra. Ryou and haki are the same thing with different names. The advanced buso haki luffy uses has not been officially named to my knowledge but the fan base just called it ryou haki when there's essentially saying haki haki. What luffy uses i would assume is advanced busoshoku haki.

If you see the scene after that she gets tired. You can't use the conqueror's infusion all the time at that age. Even rayleigh at archipelago used the conqueror's and said he couldn't do it again for a while. Ok she is a beast but there are some rules of "nature" to be applied. She was also underestimating the kids which makes sense not to go full on.
This is a horrible take honestly her named attacks like mama raid and ikoku sovereignty were much stronger then this acoc punch so she still tried much harder against Kidd and law then page one
Our perception changes as the protagonists does, think back when Kaido one shotted Luffy, he was probably using conquerors infused haki back then but it looked like regular, heck go back to Marineford where everyone was using Haki but there was no visible representation for it because Luffy didn't fully learn it back then.
