I realised that walking is pretty much the same gameplay as leveling in classic WoW and now I enjoy taking walks.

I really like the idea of just doing something for 5 minutes to start with. It gets you started! I believe strongly in lowering the barrier of entry to whatever point necessary to get you going. Like you said, you almost always end up going longer. It's just starting that's the hardest bit! And after 5 minutes you go tell yourself you showed up: dopamine hit, motivation, off we go

Ah thank you Zach this is exactly the video I was craving from you when I found out about your previous career. As a collector this gave me some great ideas. One I’m going to try out today is I’m going to do a squat or a crunch on my exercise ball whenever I initiate a pet battle. I also really like the door touching tour idea- maybe I will try that out while sending my character on flight paths instead of sky riding to a location. Bonus points for picking up & carrying things that need to find their way back home around the house (looking at you, husbands socks discarded on the living room floor).
As a follow up to this discussion I would love to hear you delve even deeper into cultivating healthier self talk re. exercise. Because I think for a lot of us the struggle is trying, failing, then internally berating ourselves which drains all remaining motivation. In previous iterations of exercise regimes I had an attitude of “When I get to xyz point, then I’ll be worthy of my own love, then I’ll be a good person.” This is especially damaging when the message is reinforced by society / is so pervasive.
Lastly I would love love if you would be willing to help us out on stream with little reminders to try these things out. Maybe we could do a stretch break together (could be nice timed w ads for those who aren’t subbed) or you could lead us through some wrist / hand mobility.
Thanks for encouraging us to take better care of ourselves ❤

I the past couple of years I haven't exercised at all and just sat at the computer playing video games and the occasional office work which is still sitting at a computer. Last week I decided to exercice a bit and started skiing again, the first day I could only do 1 round because I got sick form the sudden strain on my body from being overweight. Three days later I went again and I was able to do 5 rounds and today 5 rounds again and got better at it and lose weight over time. Is it hard to do? Yes. Do I look down on myself just because I could do 32 In a day 5 years ago? No. As Acadiian said don't look down on anything you can do to exercise, maybe the first time you did 5 pushups but the next day you could do 3 and that's ok, next try again to do 5 pushups(or what you want to do), don't be ashamed to start small. Failure is not not reaching your daily/weekly goal, failure is giving up on the journey. Good luck all.

Thanks for sharing this! I had a medical scare that motivated me to get out of my comfort zone and I worked out consistently for a year and a half. The medical diagnosis hit and totally derailed me from all that work and progress. Currently in the mental struggle to get started again. Hard to be kind to myself after losing all that progress.

I bought a cheapish rower despite a lot of people saying that if you weren't already working out at a gym, working out at home wasn't going to happen. I like being able to just stop, do 10-15 minutes of rowing while following a video, and continuing on with my day. I'm very hopeful to improve my health and get to my pre-COVID weight with that, in combination with counting calories.

I love the points raised in this video, I think they're spot on. As a fellow gamer who got into fitness a few years ago, I pretty much agree with everything, well said!

this is fantastic advice! as i was thinking about what i enjoy in WoW and other games, it hit me: i *love* exploring. i love seeing the world open up in front of me, finding hidden secrets, and blazing my own trail. there’s a river in the woods near my house, and it’s a bit of a jog to get there, but i’ve done it several times now and it felt incredible to push my limits, bit by bit.
there’s a couple mile-long loop at a bigger park in the city that i want to make someday. my girlfriend has now taken that hike (it’s got some rough terrain, too) and says she found the most beautiful spots out there, far from the park entrances. and a thought just hit me! i should print out a map of the park and track the furthest points i’ve traveled, then somehow illustrate that map completion on the physical copy. it would be amazing to one day look at that map and see it all filled out, and i could even mark down interesting landmarks or places i want to return to with my nature-loving friends.

I'd really like to get a standing desk and walking pad, then I could do transmog runs while moving a bit in real life!
Some really great points in this video, glad I found it!

I really like that mentality. I was almost there. I was exercising at home with my boyfriend and one day I was like, "You know what? These horizontal pull-ups? They're actually pretty fun!"
But then unfortunately I got a neurological condition, which meant I was literally falling and hurting myself whenever I tried exercising. To the point I now have to take elevators. Got diagnosed at the end of last year and on the waiting list for treatment.
Fortunately the condition is not actually dangerous, so it's now trying to figure out how much I can get away with before symptoms show up. (it's not much, but hey at least I feel safe again)

I have done similar things. I love Classic WoW because I love the grind and getting level ups. I see lifting as a grind as well to get level ups. That analogy has helped me a lot. And dont forget to rest. You should not always be grinding and levelling. Sometimes you stop and allow your rested exp build up so when you come back you can really hit it!

I used to go to the gym in my lunch break (I wfh) last year, and took a bit of a liking to the rower with a further interest from watching the Olympics, but as I only had a 1hr break to get there, do a workout, and then travel back (a really short journey), I felt like it was always rushed and never truly was able to enjoy it or really use it so I mainly stuck to the treadmill. I've also always been really self-conscious so the additional factor of trying to use a new machine with the above just was never realistic.
I've since felt the urge to do something about my sedentariness and have ordered a rower for my home (which was a really tough decision deciding between the c2 and hydrow - ended up with the c2). The thing that has pushed me to do it was seeing the ERX app. Similar to what I've seen with Zwift or Rouvy, having something similar for rowing as that game-like approach of rowing against other people was something that I could relate to a lot. I'm competitive in my gaming and although it is depressing a lot of the time, I still play it so incorporating that into exercise without the time constraint I felt was a perfect decision.

i found that just changing my equipment (cloths lol) help me get my exercises done because i already committed , it would feel silly to change back after just 5 pushups , so i ended up working out for an hour or so .

I like to walk on my treadmill, and I have a steam deck with a docking station so I'll play Diablo 4 or WoW (with console port) and the time flys by. I do a pretty steep incline at 3mph for 30-45 min.
