I think the non chamfer corners might be better for the extentions male/female fitment. (No unusable space). Whereas chamfer in the actual socket where meets the bolt head is better for, and easier for access.

Yes definitely do a video looking inside because if the kit is 150 and 230 separately I'm curious if there's a big difference in the ratchet. @@thingsmenthe corners are rounded. Show me a test that indicates making the walls thinner at the square drive makes it less likely to break...... They call heavily rounded or chamfered interior corners "stress relieved"..... But I'm not buying it. It makes the socket thin at the square drive. It's round enough, and I bet it's fine. They do test these to failure when making new designs.

What are the dimensions of the foam?
And I wonder if they’ll have a metric only kit.
I’ll take the less chamfer. Stress risers on that portion of the socket are unlikely under most use.
Those wondering wtf the foam thing is about, you can thank the aerospace industry and /or 5S. ANYTHING that isn’t supposed to be on a plane is considered Foreign Object Debris (FOD). So we have tool accountability. One of the ways we accomplish this is with foamed shadow boards, with contrast typically, so we can see at a glance that something is missing. It doesn’t prevent it 100% but it does help tremendously.

@@dylanplagmann5236 no chamfer on a socket is purely a cost cutting measure. There is no benefit to not doing it. It will not make a socket fit tighter on a ratchet. The fitment is determined by tolerances within the square drive cut out itself and how it meets with the tolerances of the anvil of the ratchet. Chamfer is preferred because it allows more slip or angle when applying the socket to the ratchet. It makes it easier to put the socket on the ratchet because it doesn't have to line up so perfectly . Also don't tell people what they can and cannot think.

It may or not be on purpose. They don’t manufacture them. They contract out Taiwan manufacturing which can lead to problems.

Looking at that set, the Snap-on Blue-Point are still the most compact sets in the market and laid out better. Although they are blow molded cases, even the plastic Blue-Point the dealer will warranty or you can order one.
I'm not a fan of foam either. Metal was better but the best laid out Taiwan took sets out there are Blue-Point and have a true lifetime warranty. Why they cost more.
There are a few inconsistencies with Icon tools. My stubby Icon 3/8 ratchet is ok, but thicker than the Snap-on stubby and has sharp corners. The 1/4 drive Icon ratchet the one with the grip part is the entire handle, this ratchet has so much back drag it's unusable.
There are also manufacturing flaws in the icon socket sets, but what screams cheap tools is the same metal and how easily they are damaged. The cheapest of the cheap Gearwrench or Greatneck are harder chrome steel.
Icon may look like a Snap-on design, but they are nothing like Snap-on tools. Far worse!
The Icon wrenches made in Taiwan are all the same quality as part store brands like Napa Carlyle but the Carlyle are slightly higher quality. Both brands the V shaped wrenches will split down the middle.
Performance wise and durability, the Icon tools are no better than Pittsburgh tools, but Icon cost a lot more. This is obvious looking at the Pittsburgh pull handles vs Icon.
All the pliers and screwdrivers at harbor freight are poor quality. All screwdrivers and pliers at harbor freight are pure trash. Not worth anything when the teeth in the needle nose wear off after the first use!
There is something wrong with everything harbor freight sells. That's why it's cheap! Their torque wrenches especially the split beam are unusable. The adjustment wheel freely spins and hard to set and it's heavy as hell compared to vintage Snap-on which is much better deal on eBay for around $130 to $220. I got the vintage Snap-on split beam on eBay the 3/8 and the 1/2 torque wrenches for $300. The one with the direction switch on the head. They work flawless!

Appreciate you taking the time to write your thoughts down. I would agree that a lot of what HF sells is low quality China goods. However there are items out there that do a good job at presenting themselves as quality tools. My biggest gripe is that as soon as HF get ms something nice they tend to cheapen it out so they can still sell for the same price. This set is a perfect example of that.

It would have been nice if they laser cut that top layer with all the numbers of the sockets so it would shine through red so you could see clearly what you were grabbing or what was missing instead of it being black on black and blending in but yet have nice red accent and everywhere else stupid

The gearwrench 3/8 set from Amazon is much cheaper, the 56pc 3/8 Milwaukee set that often goes for 99 at Home Depot is also better than the icon. That junk icon set isn’t worth the price even if you consider a 20-30% rare coupon off

Looks like my Husky Multi-set that I got for $30 about 3 years ago, similar case with more sockets (universal sockets) and extra features + stubby wrench! This would be perfect if it was all Metric and not mixed with that useless SAE sockets that no modern car uses since the year 2000's! I don't have SAE sockets because they are not needed anymore (only for old ass domestic cars) and I haven't seen any mechanic use any of them ever since when fixing automobiles.... All Metric all the way to 24mm would be an incredible Master set and would buy it in a heart beat!

    • @thingsmen
      @thingsmen  Месяц назад

I wouldn’t get rid of your SAE sets yet. Most houseware fasteners are still just that. They are handy to have around but if you are an auto technician then they don’t often see the sunlight. Much about this set is great but the cutting corners on the sockets and ratchet are a big red flag. Turn out several others are complaining about the same thing as I am. Thanks for commenting 👍🏻
