NOPE!!!! Jack is SPENCER'S son. There are a few clues. In Yellowstone- there is a scene with Beth and her Dad, John. He has a crystal whiskey glass in his hand and he is going to throw it. Beth stops him and sya's it was his Grandfathers. In 1923, Spencer is shown on the ship with the same crystal glass. Fine crystal is not something a cowboy would care about- BUT it would be important to someone bred into English society- Alexandrea.

The residential school scenes are some of the most brutal scenes and extremely difficult to watch. Also, when she mentions not living long enough to find a husband, it's a very telling moment. There are many children who never made it home from residential schools. Even now, there are unmarked burial sites being discovered to this day where these schools once were.

I'm following along with you because of your perspective as a novelist. I'm watching these series with you in the order I binged them over the past couple of weeks. I shared many of your observations and questions of 1883.

The priest played in supernatural as Cassiel‘s friend who was helping them find the weapons and he sent them to that alternate reality where they were actors. I think the episode was called the French mistake.

what I did before watching 1923, was to watch the timeline - there are sites that have the hole family tree

This first episode of 1923 is when I began to compare this story to Game of Thrones. Raw survival plus the political realities of the time and place.

thanks to the this show we have a full family tree of the Dutton now
and we already know what happened to some of the characters thank to Yellowstone we saw James his death in Yellowstone season four and flashback he was shot in 1893 and Spencer we have already met him and the same flashback to when he was a kid
And Jack it’s not gonna die in the show the reason we know that because if you remember in Yellowstone John loves to talk about his family one of those many family members he talks about is jack his grandpa he mentions to Jimmy that his grandpa taught him about phantom pain because he lost his leg so we know that Jack lived long enough to meet John from Yellowstone and at some point Jack’s gonna lose one of his legs in life

Yea, Yea, Yea . So glad you've started this one. Allot of mixed opinions on this one. As for me, I find this chapter the most intriguing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

this is very true, the cattle ranchers and sheep ranchers were always at war with each other over grazing rites back then and even the early west

reason why the Rangers are struggling it’s because locus is eating all the grass is causing animals go hungry that’s a given but the major fact is ww1 when the war was going on between 1914 and 1918 the military needed beef but the war ending cause many industries go to hell which caused the great depression One of these many industry was the cattle business is now soldiers are coming home from the front line the military no longer needs their beef making it where there’s no market to sell to you anymore and The market that can be sold to is basically given them scraps in terms of money

Anna: Jacob is James Dutton's older brother. John and Spencer are James and Margeret's youngest two children. You saw them in 1883 when James came home wounded from catching and hanging the horse thieves. You saw John Dutton (The original) in 1883, but he has only 5 years old there. Here in 1923 he is in his early to mid 40's His son is Jack ( Real name John Jr. ) so James and Margeret----> Elsa, John(-4), Spencer, John(-3) and Emma--->Jack, (John(-3) ) ---->John Sr. ( John(-2) played by Dabney Coleman in Yellowstone Season 2)-----> John Dutton Jr. and Evelyn Dutton (Kevin Costner and Gretchen Mol) ------> Lee(deceased), Jamie(adopted),Beth,Casey. Casey ( Casey Dutton and Monica Dutton -----> Tate, John V(deceased).
The indian girl at the school is Teonna Rainwater is Thomas Rainwater's Great Grandmother.
I hope that clears up some things or it might have made it more confusing.
What was most interesting for me was how it took more than 100 years for someone to tell the story of how native american children were FORCIBLY and LEGALLY taken from there families in the interest of being "civilized" I had heard rumors and whispers of this 50 years ago in Jr. High School and High School from some native american classmates. But it was like it was a dirty secret that they were not supposed to talk about. This actually went on all the way up to the 70's So far there have been about 1900 bodies of Canadian First Nation children discovered in unmarked graves in sites that were former schools. BUT I do not want to spoil the rest of the series for you. You can look up the details online if you are interested.
OBTW: The reason that cattlemen HATED sheepherders ( a vile curse in the 19th century in the American west ) was that sheep ate grass down to and beyond the roots. So that the grass would not come back the next spring. Cows only at the blades of grass so that it would grow back the next year. So if there was an open pasture ( owned by no one so you could freely graze your livestock there ) and sheep had been grazing there the grass would not grow back. And because they smelled that sheep had been there cows would not even go into the pasture.

Actually, Jacob is James’s younger brother. James is the oldest out of him, Jacob, and Claire. James was born around 1830… Jacob was born around 1845. If you watched the show, in the last few episodes Jacob mentions to a bank accountant that he was 78 years old. James, being born around 1830, was in his early fifties when he and his family came to Montana in 1883. He and Margaret were in their early sixties in 1893.

So as far as i can understand, Montana had its Great Depression sooner than elsewhere, mostly because of WW1 ending. No war meant soldiers were coming home and raising their own food again, so the surplus of animals that Montana had had now lost significant value. I think

1883 was better than Yellowstone and I have to say that 1923 doesn't come close to either series. At least not yet. The best part of this series is actually the one that has nothing to do with yellowstone, but takes place in Africa.
