  • PEP opened its first store in 1965 in De Aar, in the Northern Cape. Over the next 55 years, the PEP brand grew to be a firm part of South Africa's history and culture. Today there is a PEP in virtually each and every town in South Africa.

If only black South Africans can learn from this, they would reclaim the informal spaza shops and clothing retail shops taken over by Pakistanis and Somalis, we would have such nice stories of black retailers in the near future

It was the Coloured Development Corporation and Pepkor that started PEP Stores in 1973. At the time, a Coloured company was defined as 51% owned by Coloured people. The CDC invested up to R20 million in Coloured owned businesses. PEP Stores started to target consumers in the townships with cheap clothing and Coloured people worked in textiles, with the necessary skills to do so.
