  • In the North East of England there is a strange and hyper localised genre you have in all likelihood never heard of. It’s called Makina.
    Emerging in the late nineties it fused European hard dance genres and became the instrumental backing to a generation of MCs who used it to talk about the intimate details of their lives, whilst hyping crowds at 180bpm.
    It's the sound that builds community and exorcises demons. The sound that embraces difference and channels sensitivity. It's the sound of loss, deprivation and joy. It's tradition, identity, folksong; it's the sound of the North East.

    This is incredible. I'm a Spanish makina DJ living in Reading and I never heard about it. I knew about the UK hardhouse (we call it bumping in Spain) which I used to mix with "cantaditas" (songs with a predominat female melodic voice) I'll have to pay a visit to the North East now 🤟

      As a Spanish, it is really weird to listen to Makina with the speakers rapping over the melodies, but English blokes seem to fucking enjoying it, which is the most important thing.
      I lived in the UK for 5 years, but down the south, very far from Newcastle. People seem to easily judge these people calling them chavs and stuff, but look at the area... the goverment doesn't give a shit about Newcastle. Sad shit.
      I would call chavs the ones I met in Abingdon, where they decided to live like tough guys, rejecting all the good oportunities that they have in their environment, but about these guys... they have my respect, I just wish peace and happiness to them.
      Kind regards from Spain

      It's also bollocks, you can compare these people in the 90s/00s to people from the american south, not very accepting of anyone different, probably attacked a few goths on the way in for example. You either fit in with how they looked and acted or youd be fighting because of how insecure they are with their masculinity. Love the music but the generic type of person going to these things was not a very good one.

    used to go to raves in Seattle, Washington, and happy hardcore and Spanish makina were pretty popular there in the 2000s, along with breakcore. This shit made me cry, I felt so much kinship with people who I will probably never meet. Raves really are a magical thing, aren't they?

    • @purrrbot
      @purrrbot 2 года назад +3

      Seriously. Makina/HHC/breakcore/hardstyle/etc are still a massive thing in SoCal, Seattle and Phoenix. I think because the party promoters have close relationships with DJs/MCs in the UK/Spain/Etc that it would be impossible to fully untangle the two communities separated by 1000s of miles. Really grateful to have grown up in the west coast raving community.

    Nice video. Sounds like some Scottish bouncy hardcore (without the kazoos) which was a big style in North East pre makina days Coliseum, Monkey and Judgement Day, etc along with the Italian tunes. Makina DJs here still mix some old bouncy with it (some oddly renaming it makina as probably don't know any differently). Fast beat rapping no different to MC Bee from Ultimate Buzz. Even sounds like Ultimate Buzz tracks. MC Attack in the North East with Neurotek too. Looks like it filled a gap when bouncy was no longer made by mid 1990s.

    This is honestly quite unique. I've been living in England for 4 years and never heard about it. Makina movement was certainly very strong in Spain in the 90s, specially in Catalonia. But never was associated with Gay culture or roots as the video says. The decline actually came with far right political movements associated, along with the low quality of productions in the last days. There were obviously a lot of open minded ravers as well, but I don't think you wanted to be or look gay on this Spanish clubs at the time. Great work anyway!

    • @yosiposi
      @yosiposi 4 года назад +9

      Exactly, I don't know where he got that from, it's completely wrong. I'm sure there were closeted makineros, but they would've got massively bullied or violently beaten up if they had opened up about being gay in public. Not to mention kissing or holding hands, I regard this as quite impossible.

    • @llorencgarcia9529
      @llorencgarcia9529 3 года назад +3

      Totally agree, here born in Barcelona. By the late 90's Musica maquina, was associated with right-wing skinheads and far-right crowd. I remember having to change my way of coming back home on Saturday night to don't cross in front of Musica maquina clubs. I would say that the original valencian maquina scene, when Chimo Bayo, in the early '90s, the scene was more diverse, but by the end of 90's music maquina was 100% associated with far-right movements and skinhead subcultures.

      Have a listen to Spanish Bumpin and Spanish Trance. Producers like Miguel Serna, Raul Soto, Ismael Lora, Headhornys etc.
