  • After the commercial success of New Horizons, the Animal Crossing series has a very bright future ahead of it. Probably. But there’s one fear for this franchise’s future that has only grown in my mind since New Horizons finished its content rollout. Let’s talk about free updates, and why they could be the biggest threat Animal Crossing has ever faced.

It’s truly sad how New horizons got treated, but at least it made me discover new leaf since it bored me so much lol

Same lmao. When I found out about the 3DS eshop closing, I scrambled to buy a 3DS to... do stuff with it. I figured hey it's the perfect time to try out the legendary New Leaf, and it's SO REFRESHING. It really puts things into perspective having only played NH. Not to mention the gigantic 3DS library that I can go through someday hopefully :')

If they made an HD Remake of new leaf on switch I would be so happy because many people can’t play new leaf since they don’t have a 3DS and then new leaf would be introduced to a new audience.

execution is definitely the biggest concern. for me the biggest missed potential was never getting more photopia events, and holidays not having diff items or activities each year to warrant replaying them. it wouldve been the perfect excuse to bring back old NPCs with new roles and make holidays more replayable

This game was delayed long before the pandemic even hit the bat chowder. What scares me in general, not just about Animal Crossing, is how mobile games and other free to play titles have taken the industry by storm. Companies have seen how big they can be and I don't think we've seen the full consequences of that just yet. Pocket Camp, the numerous Pokémon apps, Fire Emblem Heroes, all these and more have been slowly holding back main titles from being innovative and killing off the concept of spin offs entirely, and bleeding into them in the form of the update strategy, the drip feeding of content to keep players interested. New Horizons and the other Nintendo games that adopted this strategy I think were the beginning of bare bones video games. It's also more dangerous for the consumer because once you've paid for the title at launch, they're under no obligation to keep giving you free updates and you're at the risk of ending up with something you don't feel was worth it after all. I HOPE I'm wrong and they learned their lesson with New Horizons.

I honestly hope they make a game with more flavor the next time. The amount of NH players I see complaining about NPCS in the game....that theyre even in the game but also that they have to play/do the stuff the NPCs requires....it's like some of them just want a Nintendo Dress up game....which is exactly what HHD/HHP is for! Like OBVIOUSLY It'd be cool if they included the design elements in this game in the next one I like the outside decoration and the villager house decor... the current gyroids are the best thing to come out of ACNH IMO---But I hope we get more story and content in the game when it RELEASES! I don't think I could have fun in an "animal crossing" game thats an over glorified and simplified sandbox game that has NO NPCS, has nothing new/exciting and just hands everything to me Day/Month 1 and tells me oh well that's it right after....I mean if the game has no ending then I obviously want to work on it and play it and enjoy it for a long time and have reason too! If I wanted to only play animal crossing for 30 minutes each day Id just stick with Pocket Camp....which I play still! Side Note: Pocket Camp can be outstandingly fun for free but believe me the subscription perks are tempting some days

My theory always was that right after game was announced for 2019 that they went with a major shift in development probably to the island mechanic or some other main feature that caused the delay but they still needed more time and they didn’t wanna delay again so they decided to do uodates

The wording "free update" was pretty dumb. Quite disappointing news made into some kind of hype. The content that was considered as "free updates" was content that was mostly in previous Animal Crossing games. It should have all been in the game as day one release.
The only thing an update should bring is new content. Actual new content. Not microtransaction junk (cosmetics, and decorations). Not bringing back content previous games in the series had. New content. I would love to have actual games I can play within Animal Crossing with the islanders that live on my island. A carnival expansion that takes you to a new island full of interactive activities like bumper car racing, shooting galleries, playable arcade machines (including various crane games). Yakuza has a plethora of side stories that are based around games (lol RC Car racing). FF has its collectible card game Triple Triad. Anything to make use of personality types or character specific skill range, and more things to do with your islanders.
The games are very barren, and just remain stagnant in content.
The AI has become even more boring as the series went on. :(

With Puffpals: Island Skies on the horizon, as long as it's at least as good as I feel it should be upon final release, I'm personally genuinely in no hurry for the sixth mainline animal crossing game. It does have to come eventually though (less than 10 years since New Horizons' release), and it better launch in completed state, as to mean, missing no features which are to be considered a given for a mainline animal crossing game at this point (paintings, swimming, roost, gyroids, etc.).

It's such a shame what happened to NH. Hopefully Nintendo were listening to feedback and won't make the same mistakes with whatever comes next.
I will say tho that the idea of constant updates in order to keep a game "alive" could've happened sooner or later to this franchise. Sadly, that's a thing many developers and players believe to be essential in today's market, so much so that you will see some people inquiring whether a game is dead (even if it's a single-player game with no online functionality whatsoever) simply because it might not have had any updates in a while.

Personally, while I didn't mind the updates with New Horizons as I did enjoy some things coming later like the holidays and the new ideas, I do agree that I may not like Animal Crossing 6 as much if they just repeat the same update strategy they had for New Horizons. If they do, I'll just be absolutely annoyed this time.

I guess the important question is do you Protendo, genuinely think that this is such a monumental issue that you will not be buying the next Animal Crossing game at its launch? Or will you be waiting a few months until such a time when you think the game contains enough 'content' to do so?

    • @Protendo

I mean, the fact of the matter - which I tried to express by the closing joke of the video - is that at the end of the day, I’m an Animal Crossing fan. I’m not going to deny the fact that the next game is gonna be in my hands day 1. The fact that I have a channel that’ll practically require my thoughts on it definitely contributes to that as well.
It’ll also be difficult to fully grasp the amount of content the game has until I play it for myself.

This couldn't be more true. I remember I tried to see for myself how much better New Leaf really could be compared to the previous 3 games (all of which I had played except for New Leaf, as i didn't have a 3DS at the time), just by sheer research. Now that I've actually played New Leaf extensively, I can tell you that simply reading up on a game, even watching let's plays of it, all for hours and hours, doesn't compare in the slightest to actually playing it yourself. @@Protendo

I seriously hope the somewhat strong backlash to the free update model will make them reconsider for the next generation. Recent games like Pikmin 4 are so content packed that I hope it paints a brighter future for Animal Crossing and every other series that was negatively impacted by free updates. And I totally agree with the concerning way people talk about how "This game wasn't supported for long enough" instead of "This game should have been complete at launch"

What the 2.0 update gave us, was mostly more set dressing, which was nice. But I don't remember there being anything that really chanced the way I played. I do miss getting new new villagers introduced and seeing the hype around them XD

I played animal crossing as a kid many years ago, I was young enough that I don't remember which game it was. I loved ANCH but got so bored. Finally started again, stumbled on one of your videos, and said omg I still have my 2DS, I'm going to get new leaf! I love it so far. I don't like the dollhouse vibes of ACNH and the characters are a bit one-dimensional. I also happen to work in politics so I really enjoy being a mayor in New Leaf! xD

I’ll be honest these days when I hear that people still play new horizons I don’t understand cause the game is dead. The game didn’t come out fully and it never got finished. And you can say well people stilled played new leaf for seven years! And to that I say new leaf was made to hold people over (yes I know they planed to release on Wii U version) but still that’s the power of new leaf it has so much to offer. New horizons looks entree to the main course that is new leaf! I could spell the whole entire alphabet of things new leaf has that new horizons doesn’t

I would actually say that New Horizons is in fact a finished game in its current state. It even introduced more features that we could only dream of back in the Wild World-CIty Folk days, and is arguably the biggest Animal Crossing game released so far. It's just that it still feels souless in comparison to the previous games because the villagers don't feel nearly as natural and aren't as complex in their dialogue as they were in previous games. They also don't give you as many tasks each day to occupy yourself with and help grow your bond with them. Overall, its core isn't bad at all, in fact it could have easily been the best of the bunch, if only just as much love and care went into it as there was for the first game.

I think a lot of people just love decorating their islands/homes and in that regard New Horizons definitely offers more options than New Leaf especially paired with Happy Home Paradise. The main thing missing from New Horizons are proper life sim aspects and mini games.

@@leescrossingworld9151you have a point but i still think that not having anymore than 2 upgrades for the store makes it feel very unfinished but yeah the game feeling souless is a far bigger problem.
