Grizzly bear loses cub, reunites over a year later!

  • This female had her first cub in 2009. In 2010 we respond to a report that a male has charged out of the trees at a worker in a skidster before turning it's attention on this female and her yearling. A chase insues with the boar keying in on the cub and the two of them disappear into the bush. By the time we get there she feeds but is visibly agitated, and we fear the worse for the cub. She is now cubless and returns to mating that season and the following spring in 2011 she emerges with two brand new cubs. She keeps them real close and avoids particular areas the males will be to keep them safe. Late in the summer one of the staff spots her high on the slope, she is not just nursing two cubs, but a third cub, one that is considerably bigger. Now two years old, the lost female cub from 2010 has finally found it's way back to mom no worse for wear. Mom accepts it with open arms at an age the females typically desperse, and even takes it to den. In 2012 she shows up with her two yearlings and her three year old cub, and immediately bolts out of the area as it is the mating season. The family of bears are seen all over and are very comfortable around human activity, she knows by doing this her cubs will remain safe, all three of them are female. For a good month she is monitored until she was ready to come home. It was such an incredible dynamic to be apart of, and seeing something was truly rare to see. Working with bears, you always get to see something new and are constantly learning.
    For those wondering if the cub that returned was actually hers, DNA confirmed it was her daughter. All three cubs were female.

      When it came to the data and tracking the story, I don't think there's anyone else that cared to the level I did. To the others, it was a bear with a number, and a bear they had to work daily. I needed to know more, and each bear had it's own interesting story, and each year was just another chapter. I took tons of notes, and as you can see, lots of video from all the years.

    It's a nice story but what is the likelyhood of a yearling cub surviving well over an entire year, food and weather, predation...without his mother and then reuniting ? Are you sure it's her "lost" cub or just a random adoption ? It's clear that she wouldn't have mated had the cub been with her all along and the coat of the larger cub is very similar to the other two but I'm hesitant to believe a yearling has survived alone for so long.

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  2 года назад +2

      Yearlings have been known to survive, this happened in the valley with another sow and the yearling was tagged. It survived but never reunited with mom. If you work these areas long enough, you get to know who's who and where "unknowns" are from. This was her two year old. For them to survive, they need to be fast, avoid trouble, be weary, and take advantage of food sources as they come. They learn quick what they need to do and what will bring them harm.
