- Howdy! fellow adventurers. In this episode, Wavey and I cross the gulf, from Dog Island to Steinhatchee (approx 75 miles) This is one of those legs of the journey that make shanty boat captains nervous. I hope this episode helps future shanty boaters in realizing you can take your boat anywhere--Just pick your days.

Videos like this are not boring for people like me stuck at home wishing we were there.
Exactly right!!
I will second that emotion 😢
This is the type of content I enjoy watching.
Brenton and Wavy Gravy, please don’t listen to nay-sayers. I am living this trip vicariously through you and greatly enjoying it. Thank you for your documenting this trip- one I will never be able to take on my own. I appreciate it!!
Thanks for keeping us company,) I've learned to let it go for the most part. I do listen to constructive criticism
@@backwatersandbackroads Right. We've got way too much tribalism with blind participation in our country at the moment. Why not listen to both sides and see what of value can be gotten from them.
The Loopers who are knocking off 80 miles a day everyday are in my opinion missing it. The speed you travel and the rest and explore days you do are what make the trip memorable.
Absolutely! I can't stand being rushed. Ruins everything
Flat bottom boats, you make the rockin' world go 'round...
Blahahahaha!!! Love it Tom ;)
WELCOME BACK ! YOU HAVE BEEN MISSED
One of the loopers I was watching had an artificial grass dog mat their dog could pee on. I'm sure poor Wavey would appreciate it, and would save you trips on the dingy.
I have a 2002 Chevy van (the large work van type 3500) that just turned over to 250,000 miles. I call her Edna. Every time you pat your engine it cracks me up cuz whenever I arrive at my destination I pat Edna on her dash and say "Thank you Edna!" Glad to know I'm not the only one LOL.
I love that ;) My 2007 Toyota Tundra has 360k and still runs great
@backwatersandbackroads wow that is terrific. Edna and I have had many camping adventures. Plus I have her kind of decorated she sort of looks like the mystery machine on Scooby-Doo lol. There's a bunch of like retro flowers and smiley faces and all that stuff all over her I tend to forget how kind of ridiculous she looks sometimes and families will be on the street sort of watching me go by in amazement. Thank you for the reply have a safe trip
@LisaHouserman we're building a skoolie here soon ;) stay tuned...
Thanks. Never soloed off shore...much less talked to my phone (or anything) for 14 hours. Great memories.
I'll always chat with ya & wavey
I remember that day, there was 7 boats all waiting for word that you made it in, we really didn’t think you would make it till nearly midnight but you made good time.
Hi Dan ;)
I beat you would have turned around to go help if he had to call for help! You stike me as that type of people!! Semper fidelis brothers
Thriller! Good job captain.
Thank you Richard ;) I'm glad you liked it
Man, that Yamaha hasn't missed a beat, has it? Glad you had a safe crossing.
Yamaha = Dependability & Performance
All we've done is change the oil and spark plugs once. Purrs like a kitten. Love this motor. It's due for a timing belt and lower unit gear oil change
Any new outboards that get used daily is great, its when they sit for 14 months and the owner expects them to be like new that problems happen.
@@Artoconnell exactly!!
I just noticed, 18K Subscribers! Congrats!
Saftey 3rd. Be good and if you can't be good, be careful 👌
It's just something about traveling the rivers, peaceful.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT< LOVE IT.This was not boring at all. It was really hard going 2 weeks with out a video. Living vicariously through ya'll ( you and Wavey).
Man thank you for showing the peace and calm of life!! Love to follow you!! So happy to see you living your dream and your pup steals the show!!
I HIGHLY recommend you get a rechargeable spotlight for your boat. I got mine off Amazon for 25 bucks, there lightweight, and compact and VERY useful. Stay safe an thanks as always for your great content. They have a lot more "throw" then floodlights, and will reach out much further, and honestly there just fun an cool as well.
This episode brings back memories of coming into South Pass at night after fishing all day. Its was always nerve racking even in a boat made for it. Great Job!
Thanks, Brenton! Enjoy them all!!
Definitely worth the wait my friend! Glad you picked a good weather window and left early. It's funny how many folks recommend those worthless astroturf peepee mats to be added to your boat for Wavey in the comment section. House dwellers give the best boat advice ya know. 😂 Love you brother! Let the good times roll and as always may God bless you beyond your wildest dreams. 🙏❤️😎
You get it ;) she will not pee! There's no making her. She'll poop all day, but no pee on the boat. What can a captain do? ;)
Great crossing Brenton. Well I love your videos. When I was a kid many years ago I got my prop fouled 3 o’clock in the morning, coming into shore at three in the morning off the Block Island sound. Beached the 16 foot boat, got in the water to cut the rope off prop and had my sweaty feet eaten alive by blue crabs. You are much smarter than I was. Thanks for the fun, my unmet friend.
Ouch!! That's troubles upon troubles. I had a water snake hounding me today while I was in the water. No idea if it was poisonous of not
@@backwatersandbackroads holy crap! Those water animals can be absolutely ferocious and unforgiven. Stay safe!
I was going through withdrawals 😂. Glad you guys are back.
Quite the experience you’re having, which was your plan. Cool stuff…. The feel of freedom… so cool…. I get it!
:)
Holy cow you have some guts. That never ceases to amaze me. and your subs are way up, dang. :).
I remember the ride on an LST 1192 during my Navy time. LST are flat bottomed and ride like a cork in a toilet bowl
I would have a fishing pole out! Too much water not to fish, lol
Thank you for sharing your journey ! Appreciate the opportunity to ride along.
Wavy is the saltiest beagle ever, lol. What a great little friend. Safe travels
Nice vid Brent. You gotta make something for Wavy to do her business on.
I enjoy your adventures on and off the water. You’re lucky you can run the loop. It’s never boring and always interesting. Take it easy and safe travels! Scott from Indiana.
Thanks for covering so much of your crossing! I don’t see a lot of footage from other loopers, I think in many cases due to the rough seas making it tough to film when focused on navigating. Enjoy and safe travels!
Thanks for continuing to watch the series Jim ;) almost done with the next episode
Great to see captain back! Cabin boy too.😀
Captain Sir Beagle reminds of "His Master's Voice" ye olde gramophone picture. Apologies to Cabin Buoy
I missed you guys. Being out of sight of all land and people is total freedom (and elation) for me too. So few ppl get to enjoy. Poor Wavey's bladder😅
It's *good* to see you back!
Make sure your "pee-stream" out of the workhorse is flowing freely.
🙏🦉
Smart crossing; i.e., waiting for the weather to be right! Forecasts are better today than they were 30 years ago when we sailed from Apalachicola to Clearwater - 147 nautical miles. Boy do we have stories to tell! We also had the "good" fortune to be anchored at Key West during the 1993 storm of the century (which blew down the weather station at the Dry Tortugas with 110 mph winds). More stories!
Holy buckets Bev! You need to write a book;)
I was stationed in Jacksonville for them storm's!! 5 that year wasn't it! We did the clean up, every time! Lol
@@jrfmichigian You bet! We were anchored at Marathon for another one of those storms. That year most of the storms were strong fronts that blew through quickly!
@@backwatersandbackroads All written in our ship's log!
It should NEVER be forgotten that the Polynesians crossed the Pacific in essentially Pontoon Hulled Boats. I have seen them jumping like a bronco at the St. Augustine Inlet in 6 foot waves and They Did NOT sink!
Koon tiki!! :)
@@backwatersandbackroads Love me some shallow draft Boats!
You are just sipping fuel compare what those other guy are used,👍 nice trip across the gulf
I want to do this on my 20' CC, it has a new merc 150 on it, It has stellar range and cruises at 40 mph at 4200 RPM. To me getting it done in less than a month is what makes my gears mesh. to each their own.
This has been a very exciting but stressful video, you didn't need to spice it up. Great fun, thanks for sharing your trip
We did the Dog Island crossing a few weeks ago, we were able to sail the whole 75 miles, we averaged about 13.7 knots, it took us about 5.5 hours to reach Steinhatchee. It was a little turbulent but the Corsair 880 sport trimaran is designed to handle rough conditions, we just put in one round of reefing on both sails and tucked them in about 20 degrees and the Corsair rode fairly flat.
That's fantastic! ;)
I like theses videos alot more when you was on the rivers
Me too
well done Capt.
My brother in Christ Jesus. This video touched my heart more than you could possibly imagine. The incredible views of your Shanty boat gliding across the Gulf were just amazing! I felt as if I were with you! I wish I was! I pray that you and your beautiful doggy will have safe passages and a blessed time on your journey. I will be following you and praying for you. Thanks for allowing us along. May God Almighty bless you and keep you. In the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen and Amen
Thank you for that wonderful blessing. We could use them now and always.
Glad to see a new episode. Getting a little concerned. Glad to you and Wavey are doing great and moving on. Safe travels and thanks for taking us along.
i love your sunglasses. i had a similar pair i got in the "as seen on TV" section of my local drug store. used them for a long time.
I found these at a yard sale for 2 bucks. They finally broke after a year. I try to care less about fashion and style. No one to impress but the beagle
livin the dream! p.s. You have the nicest boat out there! Maximum space on board at minimum cost.
I have always enjoyed listening to the Fm radio. It's great entertaining and free. You can usually always get some good stations.
I use to also, then all the commercials!
We are near Murrells Inlet SC. Would love to meet you and have dinner when you pass through the area!
Hey bud keep the videos coming because me and my wife and little one are going to do what you are doing my family we are having to rebuild our home this past Sunday lighting hit our home and started a fire but we are taking it one day at a time please keep the videos coming it's hoping me keep me good thow what I'm going thow me my wife and little girl
I'm sorry to hear that. Terrible! Random hardship:( I will keep them coming. Next one tomorrow....stay tuned
Cool cool I'll be waiting for it
As others have already said, this crossing was pretty stressful just watching from the comfort of home. Glad you made it safely across. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. Continued safe travels for you and your first mate!
God bless you, my dog loving friend! I'd love to meet you in the future. Me and Dash bring our own sleeping bags and pillow. Stay safe and keep the dirty side down, but not too far down!
About time you posted again, I was getting worried about you two.
I totally enjoy this type of video. I anxiously await your videos.
Great to come along for the ride Brenton! I was feeling for Wavey, 14hrs is a long time for a pup!!! Good point on leaving earlier to keep the daylight for the crab pots! AllthebestRoy
You're slowing time. We've had a cuddy cabin, center console, bow rider, cabin cruiser and my experience on a friend's pontoon boat I enjoyed the most. I love your shanty boat. Love from the Treasure Coast Florida.
A new expression today. Fetch? Assuming it’s spelled that way.
I learn something new everyday!😉👍
I’m seeing boaters coming in in Waterford NY.
Yay you're back! More videos please.
Coming up ;)
Long passages on slow boats can be trying...especially for Beagles. As usual you made it look easy and cool.
love all your videos n adventures ! you are a brave soul !
Ah, the long-awaited Gulf Crossing .. it looks like you picked a perfect day for it. Couldn't ask for much better. You must be blessed
No need to stress out too much about the crab pots, since you have an outboard, which you can unfoul your prop without getting wet .. it's much worse for people that have inboards, which there's no way to unfoul the running gear without diving underwater, sometimes requiring scuba gear .
But I know those crab pots are a pain in the butt to avoid, since I still remember dodging those myself when I used to travel at night from Old Saybrook CT. to Montauk Point NY.....
Anyways, you did a great job and showed everyone that the boat made it across the Gulf without any problem or being in danger..👍
Awesome job on the crossing, I've only done Destin to Tampa or further south like the keys by boat. You did it in a in a none ocean going vessel too. That's a lot of open water to just trust a forecast. I think the stress level you had was under stated.
That big bind is the Wild West. I'm confident that if you talk to locals you will hear a lot of stories about the 70s-80s.
Brenton, these travelogues are great! I starting watching the series couple of weeks ago and was looking forward to this update. Well done!
Thank you! Encouragement really helps me keep at it.
That was a nice open water crossing. Much better than the crossing of Mobile Bay five years ago. That got pretty gnarly at times. Sreinhatchee is a cool little Big Bend area port of call. Good fishing around there.
Thanks for the rude buddy ahd no not boring very entertaining thanks for posting
Thank you, been anxiously waiting for an update. I’m hoping I can catch you when you get to Waterford Ny, at the start of the Erie Canal. We homrport at the southern end of Lake Champlain.
Nice job!!
Another great episode, thank you so much for sharing. It’s good seeing you two back on here, the wife and I were getting worried that Wavy had finally had enough and pushed you overboard lol
She tries...but I keep catching the lifelines;) thatw why I go so slow. Lol
Great video I wish I could do it but unfortunately I can’t
You done very well navigating in Brenton.
Thank you! ;)
Best video I've watched since your last...and I've little experience with boats. Thanks for these fascinating insights. Love your videos ❤
Hi Greta! :)
@@backwatersandbackroads ❤️
Let me say I love the content of most of your videos. but I'd love to see you go back on some past videos and explain more about your equipment in detail, please. What do you like, what you don't like? What you would upgrade.
I plan on a long detailed wrap up video when done with the loop footage.
Another type of boat to consider would be a Macgregor sailboat.
Under sail it cost nothing to run, under power it could run 25 MPH plus if needed.
Trailerable.
Easy way to remember port and starboard, port and left have the same number of letters.
General rule, red right return from open water.
I am truly surprised that your windows don't break from all that chop. And I've seen plastic gas cans get holes worn in them from pounding on metal flooring for too long. Maybe find some rubber or floor mats to set them on. Great video.
Love it
We rv fulltime, I want to do the great loop, my wife is a no go, and I am too old to go solo, so I am riding with you. Safe travels.
Brenton, Glad to see a new video. Started to get worried something happened? Sent you a email but had not heard back. I liked the video as it shows the real truth & reality of doing the loop. I did not mind your talking as I learn allot when you are sharing your thoughts or ideas. Looking forward to the next video.
Brenton you need to move your lights either further back on the roof or to the railing in front of the boat so the reflection from the pile on the bow doesn't blind you in the dark.
You got it. I'm repositioning it
I know you call that little Yamaha your little work horse and she is but I need more horsepower just for situations like this crossing!!
That doesn't mean you have to haul a$$ all the time....but when there is a time of need, it's a great time to have an extra 5 to 10mph.
If you would have ran into bad weather or hit a crab pot.....well Yikes.
I was also taught that there is NO replacement for displacement.
Thanks for sharing your videos....I really enjoy them.
Thanks Larry. I might go 70 HP next time. Its not that kind of boat ;)
Lol I got a 65 horse merc two stroke! On my 16 pontoon!! It's for pan fishing A! Lmfao
Beatle Bug, that's good name for your tender.
@@garynoll700 the beagle bug ;)
@backwatersandbackroads - that name beagle bug would work. That looks like a pretty good solid tender you have, I think I would hang on to it. To me a rubber boat is scary.
until my health took a hard crash 7 years ago, I had wanted to get a 19' New England cat boat with the built in cabin, with a step-able mast and a small diesel , would have gone around twice, the route you are taking first time then with sails it would be reasonable to go out through New Orleans the second time cant happen now but love to watch folks like you do it. I sure can't complain about the life I have lived🤠👍👍👍
I hate hearing about folks losing their health before they get to have a grand adventure. That's what I'm worried about too. I'll never "retire" so I better do it while we can as the song says
@@backwatersandbackroads thanks, no regrets on my end
Steinhatchee Is known for bay scallops..yummy good stuff
Another great video enjoyed as always i agree having a good light on boat but it would also help to have one or more on very front of boat so you dont get a glare from the front deck or items that ride there just a thought.
Absolutely. As it currently is, all it lights up is the scooter. I'll reposition is soon.
GOOD JOB boss!!!
For big day crossings like this video. I'd bring the moped indoors and as far back as possible, to lift the front a bit. Just saying.
Enjoying your videos.
Thank you 😎
Not a bad idea
Great job on your crossing,, I have been caught in storms on some of my trips with seas up to 10 to 12 ft in that in area. Good planning is crucial,, I learned that the hard way.. That scooter of yours, after all that salt spray, I'd sell it to someone you don't like. Real cheap.. If you hate them,, I'd give it to them.
Blahahahaha!! So true about the scooter. It was cheap ans for the trip only. I'll use some parts for another scooter.
Tense 😬 moments!
Great job you guys! One of my fav channels youre an inspiration. You got me thinkin about doing something similar 👍
Thank you for that positive encouragement. It really helps
Had another idea for you. You asked for help on mooring up on the lock wall and docks. You wanted to stay off the wall and docks to protect your gutters on the boat. I thought you might look at hopper balls for kids. (The A store online)......To keep it cheap. You might be able to buy 2 or 3 18-inch (or larger) balls for the price of 1 orange boat buoy ball. Also you could get a 12-volt tire inflator for them. To save space deflate them when not in use. Only inflate when needed. Because you don't need to use them all the time. Just a thought.
Sorry this comment has been blocked 10 times.
Comment received. Good idea! We did end up getting some bigger bumpers that worked great. What finally got one of our gutters was a silly story I'll share in a future episode
I love the videos! Even when there isn't a lot to "see". I didn't realize there were such long open water crossings on the loop, that must've been hard on Wavey! As I've been watching these first 30 some videos I think I would've done a small change to the rear deck especially for Wavey. I would cut out a section of the solid deck right out of the back door and replace it with some grating, then I would put some sort of astro turf over it so Wavey could pee on the move or at least when a trip to shore isn't convenient. The pee would just flow through the fake grass and then you could just pour a bucket of water over it to kinda wash it through. Just a thought from another set of eyes 😀 Love the content!
A lot of boaters males one kind of astro turf thing similar to what you're describing. The "problem" with Wavey is, she's SO well trained in a way, that she will not pee!! I've tried everything I can think of, but she will only poop, and that's rare. It's a problem ill keep working on. Usually we get to shore at least twice a day
Try taking some sod from the Yard! Skin it out with a shovel, put in on a little peace of tarp! Change when needed!
Man I would be trolling for some fish, that's some pretty water..
You know what I would be doing if I was crossing 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Invest is an electric bike cycle as they have accessories, i.e., saddle bags Baskets for wavy to tag a long.
We have one. Need to put it together;) Thanks eh!
Good video!
Definitely not, not exciting…lol
Love it man! I am in for any adventure man..I know time is time and can stop anyone..thanks for being an inspiration man…
Thanks for putting up with us ;)
hey, i sorry I am just now getting back with you, I didn't know you would comment me back so quickly, thanks for doing that, I will check it a lot sooner now.
For the open water crossings you maybe should try to wheel the scooter inside and center it or slightly towards the rear for better gas mileage and cutting through the ocean better…
That bugger cam be a pain to move around. :(
Just from watching videos a CDory is a lot smaller on the inside compared to your boat. The Beagle barge is spacious inside!
That's one advantage we have ;) the dorys can get up a go though
1:00 I was getting worried about you two. I am definitely a member of the star wars club and therefore I would like to say that you would make Obi Wan proud. All my life I have dreamed about being the captain of a millennium Falcon or of a Shanty boat on the river and I would like to suggest that you change the name of the barge to the millennium Beagle. You are an inspiration to many of us who cannot yet get to our own ship. It is an honor to live vicariously through you and Wavey. Can't wait until a new chapter comes out. Nothing about anything you have shared is boring. Can't wait until you hook up the wood burning stove. Ps we all want you to take some chances and learn that drone. I would absolutely love to see aerial footage of the shanty Beagle on the water
You have my word that I'll get that drone up in the air soon. Let me run the name by the beagle;)
