- Passengers on board the ill-fated tourist helicopter that crashed Sunday in New York City may have drowned because they couldn't unfasten their safety harnesses. The chopper plunged into the East River after pilot Richard Vance made a "mayday" appeal for help, citing engine failure. All five passengers died, and Vance survived. The doors to the Eurocopter AS350 were open so passengers could snap photos. But when it went down, the open doors allowed the interior to fill quickly with water. #InsideEdition

the landing was pretty soft. no way do i go flying over a river and not fully understand how to unbuckle my seat belt. i think everyone could have survived

Other reports say the harnesses were difficult to unbuckle too although if the pilot said he had time to fly to the river and not to Central Park to attempt an emergency landing and they were already over the water, how come he didn't warn the 5 people to start unbuckling? Anyway 36F water temp I don't know how to not drown, just the shock of the freezing water would have killed them. Just horrible. So sad so young all of them RIP.

I worked with a guy who did two tours in Viet Nam, the first as a F-4 pilot, and the second flying rescue helicopters. Over the years, he told me several stories about going in to get guys while under live fire. When I see something like this, I am even more amazed that he made it back alive.
So sad drowning is one of the worst ways to die 😫😭

Accidents like this can be avoided if the aircraft were somewhat upped on their tech.

Textbook auto-rotation emergency landing - unfortunately the flotation rafts did not properly inflate which caused the helicopter to list and submerge. Bravo to the pilot, he at least gave them a fighting chance at survival.

Did you see the helicopter touch down? That's a survivable landing, and a great one at that, given the circumstances. The burden lies with the company and their training policy/willingness to outfit amateur, casual tourists with harnesses that only trained personnel should be able to use.
A flight in Kauai: the safety harnesses were as simple as a car harness.
Does a car harness hard wire you to the floor of the vehicle and require a knife to quickly get out of? Oh okay...
