Jeremiah dropping boss level information on the masses.
Handling first, then power. This is the way!!
Power is nothing without control. Listen well young ones, we all want those lovely buff horses but if you can't hold them on the road it's all wasted money (and hospital bills)
This is the same for all vehicles handling first power after.

@@augusta1994 I almost always get the base model of cars, not only because they are cheaper but they a usually lighter since they don't have all the power options (windows/locks/seats/sunroof/etc). From there, I usually just "upgrade" to the top of the line caliper that came with the car or a different caliper from the same family.
For example, lets say you had a 1990 Nissan 240SX. What you can do is, get at many of the brake components from a Z32 300ZX (Ideally a TT) and just get stainless brake lines and perhaps more aggressive street pads and that would be a solid upgrade especially if this is just for a daily driver/canyon carver.
Since the Z's brakes are used to stopping a car way heavier and faster than a stock 240, they would be a decent upgrade to the stock 240SX brakes. You can apply that same principle to civics, WRXs, Mustangs, virtually any car. 👍👍

Suspension shaving a full 1 second off such a short course is actually a massive improvement. If the original lap time was 51.32, percentage wise it's the same as a 2 second improvement over a 1:45 track, which would be massive. Plus the suspension will help a lot when you start adding power.

1 second around a ~50 second track is nothing to sneeze at from suspension alone. Longer track or more laps and a ~2% decrease in lap-time builds up to impactful gains.
Not to mention how much safer it is to have reliable traction and rider ergonomics dialed in as more go-fast parts are tacked on.
    Starting with suspension is BigBrain.

    • @IsntThisAStupidName

Its a shame he went for such an expensive Ohlin's but neglected to get correct spring rates for the front so we can only assume he didn't get the correct spring rate for the rear either but luckily with Ohlins you can at least buy different springs from Ohlins and change them out while cheaper aftermarket suspension like YSS don't as far as I am aware offer different spring rates making them fairly pointless in my book.
I rode an SV with a Hagon fully adjustable shock and K-tech linear springs setup for a rider about my weight and just those mods made the bike feel like a weapon compared to standard.
A friend of a friend had a GSXR front end on his SV which had some internal upgrades to the forks and a Nitron shock but I didn't ride that because it was setup for a much smaller lighter rider so it wouldn't have felt good to me anyway but I respect the commitment and the guy who owned it loved it.

@@bpundt1094 if that was true then he wouldn't have to put extra spacers in on the front to increase preload, and yea calibrated for his weight but that is still different spring rates depending on application for example you need much higher spring rate for track racing vs fast road (street), It would have been better if he gave us his weight and his spring rates as without that all we can do is speculate. really he should be showing the static sag on the factory then before and after setup on the aftermarket, but that might be too nerdy for the target audience.

Honestly, one of the first things you should do with a sports bike is look to see if you have a local suspension tuner. It is absolutely mind-blowing the difference in performance with well-tuned suspension. If you don't, at the very least you should refer to your owner's manual and ensure that you have the proper baseline settings and that your pre-load is dialed in properly for your weight to achieve proper sag (this is very important, and not doing this is doing yourself a massive disservice).
Do not throw away money on fancy gold suspension mods if you didn't even tune your stock suspension.

I agree. It honestly makes a huge change in the bike. I started doing track days in my ninja 400 and ever since i had my suspension set up on my Panigale V2 and feeling just how good it made the bike feel in every way, I've been looking at suspension as my first real upgrade on my ninja. For those that have adjustable suspension on their bike from factory, I highly recommend it getting set up for their weight and riding style asap. No real need to upgrade until the wear out and that's only if you want to or need to

Suspension and ergonomics are the two largest price-to-performance changes I've made on a bike when it comes to track time.
The most important performance upgrade you can make on a motorcycle is you, the rider. Best way to spend the early dollars is to focus on what gives you the best chance to be the best rider you can be. Speed will come with time, but isn't worth anything without control.

Unfortunately the stock 400 forks are not even good enough for a 50kg rider let alone a normal person. I put YSS front and rear into mine after 2 years of ownership and its like having a new bike. Its cheaper than the Ohlins but good enough for every type of street riding. The rear shock is not as bad as the fork luckily.
