- The welding is taking place on top of the South Tower, the lead patch is formed to cover the crack in the existing lead, to prevent water seeping in.

Currently learning how to lead weld as part of my apprenticeship, watching this guy has given me a few ideas on how to improve the way I handle the torch! Thank you so very much for this video
That's a skill in it's self I couldn't believe the lad didn't jump when that bell went off
I've never seen the torch bent in that way before. I'm not knocking it, it's doing the job.

All the duct tape on the handle of the lead dresser has come straight from the Land Rover owner's school of vehicle repairs.

Great work! I have had a few roofers round to my listed building and they
say the best way to repair my lead lined stone gutters is to either take all the
lead off the whole gutter length or patch it with fibreglass paint.
I only have about 3 splits in my lead linings they
have told me it will cost about £2000 to fix it properly.
David Robinson agree 100%, Im a mature plumbing apprentice, my boss has been plumbing for 40 years, he did a proper 4 year apprenticeship.
He’s shown me how to lead burn and create flue flashings. It’s an art, I’ve only done one with his supervision.
Now I’m itching to get to work early and practice.

once you know your maximums and minimums, handling, cutting, maneuvering, welding , positioning ,securing ,dressing, oiling correctly..... it just becomes Heavy Metal origami :)
Im a Roofer and I did a course in lead burning. I hate to see fibre glass or any shit in a tin being used on lead. I did the course not out of greed and to take work away from plumbers but more to do with plumbers being afraid to access a roof in the first place.
David Robinson not all roofers are too off merchants... im not i was raised better than that. But I do my own lead burning because not all plumbers have the balls to climb onto a roof.

Starting to realise the key is in the prep
Always is, in everything you do to be honest. When I was a teenager I had little patience, things would be rushed, results substandard. Then through my early 20's I began to learn patience and that getting a job done was not a race, by the time I was in my late 20's early 30's I had mastered it and wish I had done so 15 years earlier. It's a lesson very few can teach you, you just need to make your own mistakes. If you have patience and spend more time and money on prep everything will be grand!
2 good examples from my life story so far. In my late teens I decided to help my mum and dad out by fitting a new bathroom suite they had had delivered, I was on summer holidays from Uni and thought it would keep my occupied. They were looking for plumbers and getting quotes so I thought I would surprise them by plumbing it in when they were at work.
So I decided that soldered copper looked the best way forward and looked nice and neat so I got all the stuff I needed. I practically burnt the copper I used so much heat, solder running everywhere, joints going black, nothing soldered properly, what a mess. In a temper I threw all the inexpensive copper solder joints back in the bag and took them back to the DIY shop and returned them all for compression fittings at about 5x the cost. Had I just bought a £4 tub of flux and some cleaning stuff and spent about 2 minutes on each joint cleaning and prepping I would have managed, but I was impatient and not prepared to prepare (I also didn't realise the importance - but that was out of refusing to take time to accept that too)! In the end it cost a whole lot more on pipe fittings and looked ugly as compression fittings do.
2nd example: I decided to have a go at spray painting in my late teens - went OK-ish, but had a lot of imperfections, got paint over everything around me, had runs in the paint blah blah. I stepped back and figured, if I had masked properly, prepped and cleaned properly and not been in a rush to batter on loads of paint quickly rather than in lots of passes it would all have worked fine! Eventually painted my classic car with excellent results, a body shop even commenting it looked really good, I spent about 3 weeks on it after work and weekends and everything was immaculate, every single panel was sanded and prepped and cleaned down and the workplace cleaned down, floors washed to remove all the dust, I even used clothes that were lint free and didn't drop fibres onto the surface as I painted etc. It was all in the prep and only took about 60 minutes of spraying time. I reckon on an average door scrape or bumper ding there is about 5-8 minutes of painting the rest is prep and finishing. Car body shop painters should be called "preppers".
What burner are you using? i wish to make small items from lead, but i dont want to purchase huge bottles and expensive equipment. any advice to get a small diy kit? thanks for showing us the video :]
We use small bottles of oxy-acetylene and oxygen we cannot carry anything bigger around the church, you might be able to hire them.

I remember the portapack. Compact oxy-acetylene bottles on a trolley.
Mini butane blow torch for soldering, or you can try with one for chefs (cooking department).
That roof needs replacing by the look of it, OTT ON THE PPE
Reply to your gutter..You need new Tpren expasion joint.Go on BLM web site and look it up....Farington roofing chorley lancashire...I have done meters and meters of it.👍Dont go for the fiber glass.Its a fast sort fix.
Hi mate did you reply to me if so I am in Liverpool and have 3 splits in my gutter lead work and yes expansion joints should have been fitted when re-roofed in 80's.
Used to push my lead forward...🙄
Replace the dam roof
for an older and experienced boy doing the leadwork trade you need to be embarrassed at the state of you're welding capabilities .
i've seen apprentices that can do a better weld. do not take any pride in showing this video off
