I’m so glad Rick is talking about this, but the overall racial problems have been more widespread for conservative minorities in the GOP. It’s not just the hardcore racists that have held the party back, even if they’ve done the most damage. If a new conservative party rises from the ashes of the GOP, it’s going to need true ethnic diversity, not tokenism.
I’m sorry but that’s the most ridiculous thing I ever heard!! The Democrats are the real racists when their the ones obsessed with race and will accuse anyone who disagrees with them as racist sexist and homophobic!!
Oh really and yet a bunch of races AKA the democrats have condoned violence against other races. Have they gone out of their way to condemn black violence against Asians in Frisco. Have they gone out of their way to speak out against immigrant lettuce immigrant latinos arriving in the US killing white people. If you think the Republican party's racist I'm black I've been a Republican since I was 18 and I live in California. The majority of my black family are republicans.
I'm glad Rick Wilson acknowledged this, but the southern strategy developed by Lee Atwater for Nixon's strategy is the direct antecedent of today's GOP's racism. And Reagan's "welfare queens" is at direct odds with his big words on racism. It's time this was dealt with honestly.
The Southern Strategy actually started before Nixon, and it chipped away at the Democrats' "Solid South" after the 1948 Southern Democrat revolt when the GOP began to run openly segregationist candidates there.
Trump's political party affiliation has changed numerous times. He registered as a Republican in Manhattan in 1987, switched to the Reform Party in 1999, the Democratic Party in 2001, and back to the Republican Party in 2009.

@@JK-gu3tl Excuse me? I'm guessing you did a little Googling and now realize your last question was asinine? And now you want me to absolve Reagan by talking about him comparatively?
Rick Wilson, now that he is on the outs with the Republican Power Structure, wants and needs to reclaim it which now means, admitting racial animus which he knew full well was in the party at the time; prior to divisive advertisements. It is akin to Chris Christie who spent seven days in the ICU as COVID had him on the ropes; now admits that he is wrong with regard to being cavalier with regard to COVID. In both cases, it is not important until it affects you. That is part in parcel with the Republican party which often operates with lack of common decency when it comes to Americans who they can squeeze in to their power block... "One day they will come for you..."
I have observed this one simple truth over the past 30 years: I have some friends who vote Republican who don't have any real racist tendencies...However, every person I kn ow who's quick with the racist joke or dog whistle comments and has racist tendencies (from the northeast to the South and Midwest), they ALL vote Republican. I hear talk about civil war a decent amount but I don't think the regional differences are anywhere near enough to actually go to any kind of organized conflict...
On the night of April 19, 1989, Trisha Meili was assaulted, raped, and sodomized in Manhattan's Central Park. On the night of the attack, five juvenile males-four African Americans and one of Hispanic descent-were apprehended in connection with a number of attacks in Central Park committed by around 30 teenage perpetrators. The prosecution ignored evidence suggesting there was a single perpetrator whose DNA did not match any of the suspects, instead using confessions that the suspects said were coerced and false.[54] They were convicted in 1990 by juries in two separate trials, receiving sentences ranging from 5 to 15 years. The attacks were highly publicized in the media.[55] On May 1, 1989, Trump called for the return of the death penalty by taking out a full-page advertisement in all four of the city's major newspapers. He said he wanted the "criminals of every age" who were accused of beating and raping a jogger in Central Park "to be afraid."[56] Trump told Larry King on CNN: "The problem with our society is the victim has absolutely no rights and the criminal has unbelievable rights" and, speaking of another case where a woman was raped and thrown out a window, "maybe hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done."[57] In 2002, an imprisoned serial rapist confessed to the jogger's rape, which was confirmed by DNA evidence,[58] and the convictions of the five men were vacated. They sued New York City in 2003 for malicious prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional distress. Lawyers for the five defendants said that Trump's advertisement had inflamed public opinion.[56] The city settled the case for $41 million in 2014. In June of that year, Trump called the settlement "a disgrace" and said that the group's guilt was still likely: "Settling doesn't mean innocence. [...] These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels."[59][60]
When Wilson was asked what his role was in getting his party to this point, he deflected without answering. Whenever a modern-day Republican invokes the name of Lincoln, beware!
JFK was racist - voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 by Eisenhower. MLK marched against Washington aka JFK after giving him votes to win by 118k+, but after he got in office he ignored doing any new laws for Civil Rights.
You are right JFK was racist and so was LBJ as well. Neither of them liked MLK Jr. It was Robert Kennedy that had to talk his brother into a lot of things. He was a much more forward thinker than his brother. Robert Kennedy doesn’t get the credit he deserved.

It has always been very prevalent in the Republican Party. They’ve always known that and pandered to it. I think that, among many other things, is why my Southern Baptist raised parents never ever voted Republican.
I could have told him this 40 years ago. I am a liberal/moderate southerner who knows quite a few of these Republicans, even in my own family, who know nothing about free markets, liberty, and free trade, etc. They vote Republican simply on the basis of their fear and animosity of minorities, homosexuals, or anyone who is not a white Christian. It is as simple as that. He was blind not to see how the Republican party feeds into this animosity for the sole purpose of getting votes. Well now it has finally come full circle with Trump, who will destroy the Republican party for years and years to come. KARMA!
As a Republican strategist, he knows full well about the "Southern Strategy" that the Republican party implemented after the civil rights movement to court "disenfranchised white southerners" (i.e. racists). It is not an accident that the Republican party is full of bigots. It was a strategy put in action for decades to grow their base. The only accident is it was so successful that the far right bigot Republicans eventually outnumbered the moderate Republicans and took over the party.
"I'm kind-of ashamed." Nope. That's not ashamed enough. This started way back even before Reagan and you were fine with it. You hurt POC, you hurt women, you hurt LGBTQ, you hurt the poor. You hurt your country to get tax-cuts. "Kind-of ashamed" does not begin to describe it.
Relegating the issue to the south and midwest broadly overlooks the fact that there has always been, and remains, a large swath of racist Republican people and policies endorsed by ALL regions of America.
Of course, Reagan kicked off his 1980 campaign in Philadelphia, MS ... the site where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964. And his speech there was all about "states rights". This is unambiguously racist, they just wouldn't be so bold as to have called it that in 1980. Reagan would be pilloried today if he did that ... as well he should. So let's not make Reagan sound like a pillar in the civil rights movement; he was giving a not-so-subtle nod to the racists ... so should we be surprised that it's still with the GOP today? No. They're simply following his lead. Let's look at Reagan with a little honesty, shall we?

Trump went way farther then most Republicans would but they do all those things behind closed doors where Trump does it in your face. I no longer support the GOP. Historically if you look back every crises was solved by Democrats, but Republican's got us into the mess. When the GOP says they want to deregulate that doesn't help working class America that helps wall street and bankers who use your money to gamble with 1% of their own money.
I agree with your overall conclusion. I cant support either party
Democrats are a crisis!! You are a fool!!!
uh... no. You're very wrong. The democrat party is literally the party of slavery, racisism, the party that argued against all civil rights for people of color and women... They're the party that wrote in all the tax breaks for the rich, they're the party that keeps the national debt increasing and inflation right along with it. Democrats are marxist, facist and evil. Don't believe me? then look it up for yourself.

I didn't expect a Conservative minded voter to talk like that.

just remember one fact.......the South prior to 1964 was a reliably blue voting bloc., then the Civil Rights laws were signed in1964-65.......and the south now became a red voting bloc.......it would certainly appear that a segment of the voting population was reacting [ negatively ] to certain citizens attaining their rights...
...all racism comes from the left...the BLUE...voting bloc...and it always has...and those RINOS like Rick

Thank you for saying it!
True diversity
There's tons of minority Republicans that actually help their communities unlike the Democrats like Gordon Lightfoot Beetlejuice.
oh so you're just gonna ignore the obvious racism democrats have against white people? ok
Southern Dems were mad at Truman and Johnson for promoting civil rights
RICK WILSON IS A BOUGHT ABD PAID FOR MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX FRAUD WITH MANY DARK SKELTONS IN HIS CORRUPT CLOSET.
Trump's political party affiliation has changed numerous times. He registered as a Republican in Manhattan in 1987, switched to the Reform Party in 1999, the Democratic Party in 2001, and back to the Republican Party in 2009.
Let me get this straight trump ain't even a real republican

Rick Wilson, now that he is on the outs with the Republican Power Structure, wants and needs to reclaim it which now means, admitting racial animus which he knew full well was in the party at the time; prior to divisive advertisements.
It is akin to Chris Christie who spent seven days in the ICU as COVID had him on the ropes; now admits that he is wrong with regard to being cavalier with regard to COVID.
In both cases, it is not important until it affects you. That is part in parcel with the Republican party which often operates with lack of common decency when it comes to Americans who they can squeeze in to their power block...

Spot on! This comment sums up perfectly the way they have operated for decades. If it doesn't effect me, then I don't care.
Hey Rick, do you acknowledge the recently released recordings of Reagan spewing pretty racist garbage?
Or Nixon with the homophobic crap. What was on TV back in the day.
Rick Wilson made the famous Rev. Wright ad. Asking him about racism is like asking Charlie Chaplin about silent film.
Thanks for the reminder
The Lincoln Project should instead be called "Buyers Remorse".
THEY put this in motion and NOW they're sorry???
I have observed this one simple truth over the past 30 years: I have some friends who vote Republican who don't have any real racist tendencies...However, every person I kn ow who's quick with the racist joke or dog whistle comments and has racist tendencies (from the northeast to the South and Midwest), they ALL vote Republican. Every, Single. One of them. All the time. Hmmmmm.....
Big reason right here why republicans are not my type 👍🏽 I just stay in my own lane
And what about it?
As a successful political strategist, one thoroughly understands all demographics, but more significantly he / she understands their target audience for maximum messaging effectiveness.
These racist, misogynistic xenophobes are the monsters the GOP has wielded for their political benefit, but now refuse to go back in the box!
YOU GUYS OWN THIS!!!
There’s plenty of racial animosity in the northeast as well. It may not be the same as the south or Midwest but it’s there none the less.
I hear talk about civil war a decent amount but I don't think the regional differences are anywhere near enough to actually go to any kind of organized conflict...
The Midwest? As an Iowan, white supremacists are the biggest minority out here. We hate everybody equally! 😁👍🏻
Ronald Reagan talked about Cadillac welfare queens
The southern strategy is alive and well
The parties never switched
The attacks were highly publicized in the media.[55]
On May 1, 1989, Trump called for the return of the death penalty by taking out a full-page advertisement in all four of the city's major newspapers. He said he wanted the "criminals of every age" who were accused of beating and raping a jogger in Central Park "to be afraid."[56] Trump told Larry King on CNN: "The problem with our society is the victim has absolutely no rights and the criminal has unbelievable rights" and, speaking of another case where a woman was raped and thrown out a window, "maybe hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done."[57]
In 2002, an imprisoned serial rapist confessed to the jogger's rape, which was confirmed by DNA evidence,[58] and the convictions of the five men were vacated.
It’s nice to see one of these guys be honest about this.
Nice earned media coverage 👌 Go, Rick!
When Wilson was asked what his role was in getting his party to this point, he deflected without answering. Whenever a modern-day Republican invokes the name of Lincoln, beware!
At least Republicans have anger on their side.
This is still downplaying the race issue big-time. Also, it's about much more than Trump.
But I'm grateful for the Lincoln Project.
Truth is truth thank you for being American with guts to admit you were wrong we need more people like you

I doubt the Lincoln Project would even exist if Sanders or Warren had won the ticket. They're happy with Biden because he's "wall street friendly"
Eventhough it's late, I'm happy that these people started to reflect and analyse on their party and the base. They acknowledged their mistakes and they wanted to build something better, that's something to appreciate on. So Irrespective of our political ideology we should respect these people for trying to bring the change.

Southern strategy never happened
"I'm kind-of ashamed." Nope. That's not ashamed enough. This started way back even before Reagan and you were fine with it. You hurt POC, you hurt women, you hurt LGBTQ, you hurt the poor. You hurt your country to get tax-cuts. "Kind-of ashamed" does not begin to describe it.
