60 Minutes, the most successful American television broadcast in history, began its 52nd season in September. I wouldn't say every Republican is racist, but they are more likely to disbelieve in systemic racism. Maybe because they don't know what it means. It doesn't mean everyone is racist, it means that there's discrimination baked into certain systems and organizations. Often it's at the subconscious level. You could say the same thing about ageism too.

I have been a Republican voter since I turned 19 years old and voted for George H Bush in November of 1988. For 33 years I voted GOP and I voted for Trump in 2016 but last 2 years Trump has opened my eyes to the party I supported. The party represented a selfish, uncaring, person. It was all about me what I have done in life was all about what I earned. Reality is I earned because I had parents who were white had good jobs and I had a leg up. Trump went way farther then most Republicans would but they do all those things behind closed doors where Trump does it in your face. I no longer support the GOP. Historically if you look back every crises was solved by Democrats, but Republican's got us into the mess. When the GOP says they want to deregulate that doesn't help working class America that helps wall street and bankers who use your money to gamble with 1% of their own money.

Reagan and Nixon before him DIDN'T play footsie with racism and racists? Southern strategy? Reagan's Mississippi speech? Reagan's despicable comments on African delegates to the U.N.?
Not to mention the Welfare Queen speech. A lot of people like this man are still in denial about just how deep the racism runs in the GOP and in America as a whole. You don't have to go to the level of a David Duke or a Proud Boys member to be a racist.
They dog whistled just enough that people could ignore it in favor of what they wanted to believe. Nixon, especially, as he came to power in the afterglow of the civil rights movement when people thought an enduring victory had been won. And like all armies in the aftermath of a victory, began to disarm and carry on with their lives.
The thing about racial prejudice, or class prejudice, or any sort of prejudice is that the mechanism to enforce them can be wonderfully subtle and difficult to see by the human eye. But they can also be powerful, self reinforcing, and even finance themselves.
School district boundaries. Prioritizing public services in particular neighborhoods while leaving others to rot. Harsher sentences for crimes based on racial disposition. Etc.
While their public reasons for these policies are very easy to sell on the surface. "I'm protecting private property. I'm protecting my children's education! I'm tough on crime!"
He stood there is Mississippi, where those 3 civil rights workers died and announced his presidency. I will never forgive that.

Sure they need money to support their cause but they are doing good work with the donations. I have yet to see a better video of how to correctly do a mail in vote so that it counts for example. (On their youtube channel and elsewhere) I have yet to see a video of this matter at all from any Democratic campaigns. And there are other examples of the good work that they are doing.

I have always attached the xenophobic tendencies to the most conservative elements of any society. The tools of politics or religion will be the base for keeping out the “other” or maintaining the “family dynamic”.

I'm glad Rick Wilson acknowledged this, but the southern strategy developed by Lee Atwater for Nixon's strategy is the direct antecedent of today's GOP's racism. And Reagan's "welfare queens" is at direct odds with his big words on racism. It's time this was dealt with honestly.
The Southern Strategy actually started before Nixon, and it chipped away at the Democrats' "Solid South" after the 1948 Southern Democrat revolt when the GOP began to run openly segregationist candidates there.

I’m so glad Rick is talking about this, but the overall racial problems have been more widespread for conservative minorities in the GOP. It’s not just the hardcore racists that have held the party back, even if they’ve done the most damage. If a new conservative party rises from the ashes of the GOP, it’s going to need true ethnic diversity, not tokenism.

Trump's political party affiliation has changed numerous times. He registered as a Republican in Manhattan in 1987, switched to the Reform Party in 1999, the Democratic Party in 2001, and back to the Republican Party in 2009.

JFK was racist - voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 by Eisenhower.
MLK marched against Washington aka JFK after giving him votes to win by 118k+, but after he got in office he ignored doing any new laws for Civil Rights.
You are right JFK was racist and so was LBJ as well. Neither of them liked MLK Jr. It was Robert Kennedy that had to talk his brother into a lot of things. He was a much more forward thinker than his brother. Robert Kennedy doesn’t get the credit he deserved.
I could have told him this 40 years ago. I am a liberal/moderate southerner who knows quite a few of these Republicans, even in my own family, who know nothing about free markets, liberty, and free trade, etc. They vote Republican simply on the basis of their fear and animosity of minorities, homosexuals, or anyone who is not a white Christian. It is as simple as that. He was blind not to see how the Republican party feeds into this animosity for the sole purpose of getting votes. On May 1, 1989, Trump called for the return of the death penalty by taking out a full-page advertisement in all four of the city's major newspapers. He said he wanted the "criminals of every age" who were accused of beating and raping a jogger in Central Park "to be afraid."[56] Trump told Larry King on CNN: "The problem with our society is the victim has absolutely no rights and the criminal has unbelievable rights" and, speaking of another case where a woman was raped and thrown out a window, "maybe hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done."[57]
In 2002, an imprisoned serial rapist confessed to the jogger's rape, which was confirmed by DNA evidence,[58] and the convictions of the five men were vacated. They sued New York City in 2003 for malicious prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional distress. Lawyers for the five defendants said that Trump's advertisement had inflamed public opinion.[56] The city settled the case for $41 million in 2014. In June of that year, Trump called the settlement "a disgrace" and said that the group's guilt was still likely: "Settling doesn't mean innocence. [...] These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels."[59][60]

There’s plenty of racial animosity in the northeast as well. It may not be the same as the south or Midwest but it’s there none the less.

Of course, Reagan kicked off his 1980 campaign in Philadelphia, MS ... the site where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964. And his speech there was all about "states rights". This is unambiguously racist, they just wouldn't be so bold as to have called it that in 1980. Reagan would be pilloried today if he did that ... as well he should. So let's not make Reagan sound like a pillar in the civil rights movement; he was giving a not-so-subtle nod to the racists ... so should we be surprised that it's still with the GOP today? No. They're simply following his lead. Let's look at Reagan with a little honesty, shall we?

As a successful political strategist, one thoroughly understands all demographics, but more significantly he / she understands their target audience for maximum messaging effectiveness.

As a Republican strategist, he knows full well about the "Southern Strategy" that the Republican party implemented after the civil rights movement to court "disenfranchised white southerners" (i.e. racists). It is not an accident that the Republican party is full of bigots. It was a strategy put in action for decades to grow their base. The only accident is it was so successful that the far right bigot Republicans eventually outnumbered the moderate Republicans and took over the party.

Eventhough it's late, I'm happy that these people started to reflect and analyse on their party and the base. They acknowledged their mistakes and they wanted to build something better, that's something to appreciate on. So Irrespective of our political ideology we should respect these people for trying to bring the change.

I really, really appreciate his openness and candor, I really do but every person who worked to get these people elected, needs to take a really hard look at themselves and take full ownership of what they have wrought on our country. This is such a great start.

Most every Republican is a conservative, and conservatives don’t think racism is a huge deal. In some sense, I agree that racism isn’t as widespread as it was in the past. BUT they seem to treat it as “not a big deal”. So when actual racist things happen, they are always last to act to fight against it.
Racism for the most part isn’t a huge deal today. On an individual level it’s still there and affects many people but systemically, not the case.
