I pre-ordered The Keep 4K on Amazon US, it has a great cast and an interesting story.
Though there are times where it kind of feels like an 80s music video but I still dig it a lot.

Even though it's flawed, I love this movie. I have several different versions of varying quality including a very grungy grindhouse release, which kinda adds it's own flavour to the film. The ending, which was cut from this version can be found on RUclips, in not so great quality unfortunately. I recommend the book, it fills in a lot of the gaping holes in the story.

@@LurkingCrassZero there’s definitely something about this movie and I say that with no bias nostalgia as I only saw it for 1st time about 2 yrs ago. Reminds me of blade runner in some ways but that’s probably because there’s similar music and a dark 80s tone

According to an interview at the time, The Keep was always meant to be 2 hours long, so Mann only had to remove 30 mins when the studio forced him to edit it. The 3 hour 30 min version was only the assembly cut with everything they had shot cut together before editing it down into a final film

I got Looking for Mr Goodbar. I mostly love movies that have 1970's or 80's real world stuff. It makes me nostalgic for my childhood. Plus the 70's never looked as good as in Looking for Mr Goodbar. Amazing quality. I think you convinced me to go get Sliver, I saw it when it came out in theaters, but was so/so on getting the VS release before.

I don't recall seeing this movie all the way through but recognize bits and peices of it. I'm stoked that Alberta Watson is in it. I loved her in the La Femme Nikita series. I went for the newly remastered dvd of The Keep for around $12. I think my player will make it look especially good but don't think most movies are worth the 4k version for the price unless, maybe I had an OLED tv. VS has the standard 4k edition up for grabs. No slip or booklet.

The Keep was basically all studio interference. The same thing happened to Michael Mann on The Last of the Mohicans which was originally 3 hours long but Fox made him cut it down to 115 minutes for more theater screenings and that film suffered because of it but not nearly as bad as this one. Mann has refused to go back to fix the film. I know that in 2004 Paramount announced a Special Edition DVD that was planned to have the theatrical cut and a European version that had a different ending that has been seen here in the versions shown on television. It was supposed to also have a commentary by Mann according to the announcement and a lot of special features. Mann nixed it himself since he was still very bitter about the entire experience with the studio taking the film from him much like David Lynch would go through with Dune in 1984 in which he swore he would never go back or get involved with it and also David Fincher on Alien 3 which still a bitter situation. To coincide with The Keep US planned release was going to be a world premiere of the soundtrack which has not been released (legally) to this day with shit load of bootlegs of it out there. A shame this didnt happen 20 years ago but to get the film in a great package like this eases the sting somewhat.

@@robertnewell6956 That's a boot. Tangerine Dream almost never licenses anything of theirs especially The Keep. They have re-recorded alot of the music from the film for other projects but the film tracks, no way have they been released since Paramount /Viacom has rights to it and also the remaining members of TD have alot of say in their releases. Now I wish the complete 8 Hour sessions they recorded for Risky Business' score would come out but no way it is without their say so and same goes with Thief.

@@robertnewell6956 I'm a soundtrack collector for 30 years now as well as worked as a soundtrack reviewer for more than ten years so I would know. If there was a legit version of the score from the film this would've been BIG news in that community and I would've already owned it by now IF IT WAS REAL. Tangerine Dream has not had a legitimate produced release of this at all. Most of the bootlegs are taken from their recordings from either live concerts or one of their albums reinterpreting the material. If it was a real release it would've been by a major label like Virgin who TD was affliated with for many years and they were the ones who were planning to release it back in 2004. The Keep at this point would be just like the movie..a limited edition release by a label like Intrada Records or La-La Land Records. TD has a major say like I said before in what they release which is why this is not legit no matter what you say. I know a friend who has at least 3 to 4 boots of this score and he's in the industry so he knows it's not legal.

The I remember the marketing of this movie seeming really mysterious, and I wanted to see it when it came out. I finally saw it recently, I'm not even sure what version I've seen. I kind of think of it as a 'Mona Lisa' level work of art that was pressured into being made in crayola crayon.
"Thief" was a really strong debut for Michael Mann. I think it's easy to see that based on the story, and the acting talent there is a really great movie there somewhere. The SFX are so dated, and I think there were some technical gambles that just didn't pay off (at least in the long run).
I really think this story with the right physical setting and a solid FX budget could really be a classic. I think there could be enough there for a mini-series on the scale of "The Man in the High Castle".

The Keep is very disjointed. I was lucky to see the film in the cinema, and confusion was palpable. The movies remarkable element is John Box's incredible production design which demonstrates why David Lean hired him on Lawrence and Dr Zhivago, probably one of the best English Production Designer's in the business at the time. The effects have, in some places, dated the production, but this is, for me, a more curious watch. For all the controversy that surrounds the production and Mann's total lack of interest in the movie, for which I can understand, The Keep does have this unusual allure which seems to raise it's head every once in a while. The cinematography is quite captivating in places, not too sure about score though. It seems to need a more orchestral arrangement, but that's something of a personal preference.

I've got to say that I saw the movie when I was a teen, when it originally came to theaters, and I was not impressed. In fact, maybe partly because I read the book and loved it, I disliked the movie so much that I have never had a desire to watch it again. So... as much as the 4K release might be a visual improvement, something tells me that I would never watch it more than once, either. I'm more excited for Greg Nicotero's coming remake, which hopefully won't get cancelled for any reason.

  • @MJanovicable
    @MJanovicable День назад

The chances of a "director's cut" of this (which isn't a definitive cut in actual moviemaking, just a contractual one) ever coming out for this movie are remote-at-best. Michael Mann is unlikely to ever revisit what for him was an artistic and commercial failure, never mind his most recent ones aren't far off either. It would be great to add the connective-tissue that Paramount executives took out, but only what's left of the studio knows if any materials might still exist. It's possible that Vinegar Syndrome knows as well: their opening statement suggests that there are in fact film materials for the alternate tv ending, so that's something. A 3hr cut of most movies is just an early stage edit, nothing more, or less. It would cost a colossal amount of money to go back and essentially redo postproduction, but since it sold out so fast, who knows? I don't see it coming soon and the idea of a remake is laughable for a variety of reasons.

Sliver also was a mess of a movie where the back story is a lot more entertaining than most of the film. Joe Eszterhaus (pronounced Ester-has) wrote Basic Instinct and it was a big hit and hired him and Sharon Stone for this. Stone wanted Brad Pitt to co-star with him because they were friends and had better chemistry with him than Billy Baldwin who she hated so much that they couldn’t be filmed together in the same shot. The ending was changed and had to be reshot. The blu ray is the international version which has more nudity much like the DVD Paramount put out in 2006 which has this version. Too bad VS couldn’t put both versions of the film just to have them. Watch the interview with Philip Noyce it’s really good and of course the studio would interfere with The Saint with Val Kilmer which Noyce also directed completely changing the ending which was much better than the final one that was reshot. I’d expect VS to do that movie at some point just imagine the great artwork it would have and possible special features.

Its too bad Vinegar Syndrome makes so little of the more premium versions of their releases. I'm too busy to keep up with them and always miss the ones I want, like The Keep - I JUST heard of it and the box set is already sold out after apparently two days. It's disappointing. These limited releases always make ebay sellers and other online sellers buy them up and resell at HIGH prices. Literally causes a little black market rip off sell fest online.
Wish these companies would just go to a produce on demand model like many companies rather than do these tiny limited releases. (The Keep only releases with the box set version with 12,000 copies. That is a joke. Of course it sold out in two days. Only those who were literally watching and waiting for the release to happen had a chance in hell of getting a copy.)
Ebay sellers are currently selling it at $120- 170.

The streaming version of this movie sucks. Kinda washed out and grainy with no solidity to anything. Seems like a bad transfer or a crappy source. I own a streaming copy because I've always liked the movie, but it doesn't look very good. That's a shame because the visuals are striking. I'm glad to know that there's a new high resolution transfer out there now. Hopefully it will trickle down to streaming at some point. Thanks for the review!

The Keep is a terrible film, but if you look at how troubled and torturous the production was, it's kind of inevitable that it wouldn't come together, and I don't think it was entirely Michael Mann's fault. Paramount wanted Mann's original cut of 210 minutes cut down to 120, and when the 120 minute cut tested poorly, Paramount cut it down even further and subsequently released a film with unfinished sound and poor editing. It's a shame because Mann doing a horror film with Nazis getting fucked up would have been cool as shit, but luckily Mann came roaring back with Manhunter.
