After visiting Prague this past December and reconnecting with my Czech ancestry after my last visit of 30 years ago, I have come to appreciate this piece. I attended a recital of the Bohemian Youth pianist where one of the pieces was a transcription of Die Moldau played by Matyas Novak at the Rudolfinum. The river itself flows to the north where it is one of the main tributaries of the Elbe. I took time to visit the Vysehrad fortress that contains the National Cemetery, final resting place of Smetana. A fitting site above the river that he made famous with this piece. Kudos to hr-S, one of the best orchestras in the world. By the way, I really believe that Smetana didn't know how to end it.

Beautiful performance as far as I can judge. A fine atmospheric yet simple and direct rendition that carries you on with the resurgences of the opening ondulating motif along the various episodes. Thank you

The Moldau is a symphonic poem written for large orchestra by the composer Bedrich Smetana. This orchestration is a piece inspired by an extramusical idea such as a poem or a description of a landscape. Smetana depicts the course of the Moldau River (in Czech Vltava) from its source to its confluence with the Elbe as well as the landscapes crossed and the scenes taking place on its banks. The composer noted his intentions on the score. Bedrich Smetana was born in Bohemia, which was then under Austrian rule, but nationalist movements were emerging. Thus, Smetana took up the cause of his country's independence and decides to compose not more German music but Czech. The work begins with an undulating theme on the flutes accompanied by pizzicati from the strings. This represents the first source to which the second will be added has the clarinet. The two themes will first respond to each other, overlap, then mix in the speed of the sixteenth notes. This strong flow will result in the main theme of the piece in two parts, ascending and descending, which gives the impression of something oscillating like water. After the serenity of the river comes hunting in the forest, of a more disturbing atmosphere, but the Moldau regains its initial calm and approaches a village where a wedding is being celebrated. This passage is a pretext for a popular Czech dance. This new theme is binary to the main tone. As the wedding ends, the atmosphere is disturbed again by a very dissonant chord which brings the pre-impressionist orchestra to the strings the magnificent and mysterious song of moonlight. The piece then gains in intensity, reaching the climax, at the time of the Saint-Jean rapids. The cadence increases and the theme becomes a military march to the glory of the nascent nation. The cascading flutes from the beginning are going up to the explosion of the main theme. The Moldau has arrived in Prague. The music decrease and the tutti definitively punctuates the work in two chords forming a final cadence. Bedrich Smetana was the first to give music back to his people and participating in the revival of bohemian culture. *Lucien*
