    In this video, I showcase why and when you NEED to install a snorkel on your Lexus GX470, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, Toyota Sequoia, or similar rig. I have seen far too many posts on social media mocking snorkels as being try-hard off-road accessories for people who are just trying to look cool. It's not about aesthetics, its about protecting your engine from hydrolocking when going through any depth of water at speed. If you modify your factory-installed air intake system, you should consider getting a snorkel.

    use a center punch before drilling it makes it a lot easier, keeps the bit from moving.

    Many thanks for your prompt reply. Whether you have a snorkel or an air scoop at the coolest position inside the engine bay, I would fit a pre-filter, albeit less "sexy" than the other heads.

    Many thanks for your informative video. I'd be very grateful for your opinion on a cool air intake modification I'm thinking of making. I have a Hilux SW4 diesel 2008. The air filter is like a drum on the right and it receives air from under the wheel arch, which, even if the ill-fitting plastic liner with its fragile fasteners provided reasonable protection from dirt and rain thrown up by the wheel, I'd like to shift the air intake to inside the engine bay at the coolest, most protected spot. My idea is to block the orginal entry tube and fit another of the same diameter either forward to just behind the headlamp or at the right back corner of the engine compartment. Can you tell me which would be the cooler position and least likely to suck in dust and rain. Incidentally, I'm againt schnorkels for varios reasons, although they do look "sexy". I'd be extremely grateful for your expert advice on this project.

      @lexus_offroad_adventures  3 месяца назад

      I’d hardly call myself an expert (though I appreciate your kind words), but I’m happy to give my opinion. In my experience this type of non-snorkel air intake tube relocation has been more toward the back of the engine. I think this is mostly for its more protected position from outside conditions than for its cold air benefits, but if you don’t like snorkels, and you are looking to protect from dust and water intrusion, I prefer this option. Keep in mind we don’t get Hiluxs here, so my opinion may be totally off for your application.

    Great vid...Well done. Quick question: What happens in a torrential downpour rainstorm? My thought is that's a much more likely scenario to cause a massive amount of water ingress than spray from around the fender liner with tape. No?

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 месяца назад

      Nope, I tested it at the end of the video with an absolute torrent from a car wash machine and it was totally dry. It’s been through many unusually intense California downpours as well and no issues. I’m just glad I don’t have to worry about that air scoop in the fender well enabling water to lock up my engine anymore. Super happy with this mod

      From what I’ve heard: if you can actually get them to send you one in a reasonable amount of time, it’s a nice piece. I couldn’t get that one because it would interfere with my roof rack.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures

      It’s just a tube, which can be designed in any way. There is one that fits flush like the Defender one for GX470. Check out LenzDesigns snorkels. They have had some issues fulfilling orders in the past though. www.lenzdesignshop.com/online-store/Lenzdesign-Snorkel-Lexus-GX470-Toyota-Prado-120-c24246247

    quick question bro. with your setup, what's your MPG? also, with your amazon snorkel, did you have a good template? i've heard horror stories of bad templates resulting in multiple holes on the fender.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  7 месяцев назад +1

      With my setup, all my accessory weight, 35s with a 4.88 regear, I’m at about 12.2mpg average on the factory computer. So add like 16% to account for increased tire diameter. About 14mpg combined city/highway.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  7 месяцев назад +1

      As for the template, I showed everything in the video… the top holes needed to be slightly notched downward. But you can always verify the template before final install. No sweat
