no problem!!! I would definitely buy them bare. Get good valves, springs, retainers, etc and check the seats. Castings are good but everything else was crap
I'm getting a set of speedmaster iron heads for my 327 SBC build. I have to use them for the class of racing I plan to enter. I will be ditching everything, valves, springs guides, retainers , collects etc apart from just the heads. As they are 1.94 valves and I need to fit 2.02 / 1.60 valves and do some tricky porting as I need everything I can get out of them. but the 175cc chamber size means there will be plenty of meat to do what I need to do
Sounds like what I did with mine. Definitely check the intake port alignment and check each spring pocket depth, i had to shim pretty much every spring a different amount to get the right install height
Hey Jeff, thanks for covering the info on the raised exhaust port floors. I will just rework my current D3VE heads if it is not already been done. I want to upgrade the Cam, lifters and rockers.Upgraded cam will on deter performance unless exhaust ports on the stock heads are opened up. Cheers from Motown/Dearborn
@@2HacksGarage Jeff, per Cam, Nothing too wild. Still want to keep my 1.73 ratio and such. Maybe the Lunati Voodoo cam? Hydraulic and hyd flat tappets perhaps. Doing research currently! Thanks Brother
Thanks, a mill for the shouts man! Strange thing with those '79 Heads I'm showing, these '69 ones are "better". But by better, I'd have to say they are a Broccoli Fart, and the ones I have are a Taco Bell Fart. Even with the issues that these Speedmaster (cheap) ones have, they are definitely a vast improvement over the Stock Iron mistakes that Ford tossed out. Just from what I'm seeing, they even kick the butter out of the DOVE-C's.... esp with just a little elbow grease & a die grinder. For roughly $500 each (bare bones) I'd have to say they are worth it & I always buy them Bare Bones no matter who makes them. Even the spendy (name brand) ones put crap valve train in them that you have to have re-done, & they all come "1 size fits all" that you have to work a little to fit your combo. GREAT video man!
Thanks man!! I love the fart reference, made me laugh!!! I’m considering a unshrouding the valve area in the combustion chamber. Not sure if I am skilled enough or not, but after a few conversations with the experts, it’s worth it
@@2HacksGarage Yeah.... I fully admit I'll Port Match, but if it goes more than that I have "Performance Machine" in Idaho Falls, or "Thunder Machine" in Blackfoot do the rest. I'm not a Head man, or Machinist by any means lol.
@@BareRoseGarage oh I totally get it! These are the first ford heads I’ve touched, and the first aluminum ones. Everything else has been Chrysler cast iron
Like Kim says, the straightest possible line off the valve out of the head for exhaust. And reverse that for the intake..from port opening to the valve. Thats the end goal. Ten years ago when I build my last 460, I opened up a set of D3 heads. You want to go more into the roof but if I remember right, there's a water jacket to be careful of. Really, with these aluminum units you got here, there's no need to fart around with the old cast iron garbage.... Great review fellas! Thinkin i need to grab a set for the next 460 build!
Thank you!!!! I really Appreciate the feedback!!! I’m many hours into these heads and now I’m researching the methods you and B&R Racing are suggesting… I’ll probably end up doing some more port work!
@@2HacksGarage Don't get too crazy on the porting. Porting works, but what makes all the difference in the world is a proper camshaft selection. Even as shitty as the SB Ford heads are, I've found a couple cam profiles that work REALLY well to make up for the horrible port designs, depending on it's indended use. Poor boy stuff, ya know!?
Great job showing the comparison. They raised the exhaust port floor on many aftermarket Ford heads. Especially 351C. Another great informative vid! 👊
Thanks!!! I’m glad I took the time to look at them for comparison, as they are “as cast”, still many differences that are improvements 🤘🏻
Thanks for the video! I have the same iron heads on my 69 429 and was looking for options!

Lunati is a great cam! I usually run Howard’s cams. Man it doesn’t take much to make these engines make power!
@@2HacksGarage Just looking for a little lumpy Idle Jeff, not radical though. :)
@@2HacksGarage Yes, Howards makes good stuff. Howards bought Con-rods from us a Borg Warrner for Chevy V-8 not the Gen 2 or 3 or Z06 rods though.
High 5 Jeff, hello glad you are doing the part 2 of the head review.
Those heads turned out good, but man did they fight me! After doing these heads, I’d never run a set of heads straight out of the box.

I know exactly what you mean. My cam is a Howard’s, good grind and should work well. It’s definitely lumpy 🤘🏻
@@2HacksGarage Did you post the specs? I swear i was in one of the videos... I'll have to go back and look.
Those iron heads look like they were in Truk lagoon for 70 years. What would the dyno say the difference is between the two ?
Those heads were on an engine that sat for years stored in a garage.. only 51k Miles on them. I’d say over 75hp.
Nice job!👌
Thanks man!!!!! 🤘🏻
