I used to work with international luxury brand called Brioni. The leather they used on wallets was calf skin. Calf skin is soft and strong. Plus they make deer leather for shoes and jackets which is soft and stretchy. Just by working with them I got to identify cheap leather just by the color tone.

your explanation between quality and price in this video reminded me of the video carl murawski’s video “why anyone would spend over 1k on a pair of boots.”
the reason being, is that carl brought up the diminishing return one will see after a certain price point in regards to general fit/function/performance.

Of course! Anything that might help somebody at home getting their start. Anything related to small techniques related to applying adhesives, tips on edge painting, discuss different kinds of threading to use, tips on professional looking skiving, or any other tricks of the trade that beginners should be conscious of while trying to create a quality item for the first time.I really don’t know because I am brand new to this. But I’m the type of person that likes to pick up the finer details of quality work from professionals who have a lot of experience. I think a lot of your viewership would feel more confident in their work if they knew they learned these tips and techniques from knowledgeable experienced sources like Rose Anvil.
I really appreciate all of the videos you have where you verbally inform your audience of what you’re doing as opposed to many of the silent leather work videos you see on RUclips.

Growing up in the 1970's we always had some dread about getting new shoes because your feet would blister until they broke in. Even into the 1990's many dress shoes were similar. Today, shoes are soft in the store. What changed? Is it different leather or is it a treatment? Was it simply "firm" vs "medium"?

Been loving your videos, man. Very informative.
Kinda like you, I bought some leather from a ren faire but it's the wrong kind. I'm not sure if it's chrome tanned or the soft leather (#glubbylever) :). How can I tell?

My opinion is...Unless you are a "master craftsman" making items that require huge areas of perfect leather like in a saddle or large bag you should probably avoid grade "A" leather. It really is just too expensive. There is plenty of leather on a "D" grade hide that is just as beautiful as on an "A" grade hide. The "A" grade just has MORE pristine sq. footage than the "D". Be savy in your leather shopping. 99.9% of leather items can be made on the lowest grade of hide without sacrificing anything! Key chains, earrings, journal covers, holsters, wallets, knife sheaths, belts, tool belts, etc, etc, etc can ALL be made out of the lowest grade leather possible without sacrificing any quality or beauty, and the lowest grade can be 10%-20% the cost of the "Grade A" hide. You can probably buy 4-5 grade "D" hides for the price of that 1 Grade "A" hide.
I bought 1 grade "A" hide in my entire life and it was the very first piece of leather I ever bought, and it was a mistake. I wasted ALOT of money on that 1st hide. Since then, I buy the lowest grade hides I can find. I know it sounds counter-productive but doing things that way allows me to have multiple hides on hand at once in various colors and thicknesses. Also if you are starting out don't ignore "bellies". Tandy sells them for $10-$20 a peice. Bellies are awesome leather! It is not junk. I used nothing but bellies for a year or 2.

Where did you learn all of this leatherwork? Is it gained experience or something like a trade school, etc.?
