How to Dry Your CPAP Tube | Can you use your machine to dry?

  • Drying your CPAP tube thoroughly after washing is crucial for several reasons:
    Preventing Mold and Bacteria Growth: CPAP tubes, especially the ones with humidification features, provide a warm, moist environment - ideal conditions for the growth of mold, bacteria, and other microorganisms. Drying the tube helps prevent the accumulation of these harmful agents, which can lead to respiratory issues or infections.
    Maintaining Equipment Longevity: Moisture can damage the internal components of your CPAP machine over time. Drying the tube ensures that moisture doesn't enter the machine, thus prolonging its lifespan and reducing the risk of malfunctions.
    Ensuring Effective Therapy: A clean, dry tube ensures the delivery of clean, dry air to your airways. If the tube is damp, it can affect the quality of the air you breathe, potentially leading to discomfort during therapy and reducing the effectiveness of the treatment.
    Preventing Unpleasant Odors: Moisture in a closed, dark environment can create a musty odor. Regular drying helps in keeping the tube fresh and free from unpleasant smells.
    Enhancing Comfort: Using a dry CPAP tube is more comfortable for the user. Damp or wet tubes can feel unpleasant against the skin and might cause irritation.
    To properly dry your CPAP tube:
    Hang it to Air Dry: After washing, hang the tube in a clean, well-ventilated area. Ensure that both ends are open, allowing air to circulate inside and outside the tube. Hanging the tube over a towel rack or a hanger is a common method.
    Use your CPAP Machine: After drip drying for a couple hours, you can can use your CPAP machine to dry your tube before going to bed. Simply connect your tube without a mask, and run the machine with a dry tank and humidifier OFF. This should take 5-10 minutes, or less if you elevate the machine and allow the water to drip downwards.
    By ensuring your CPAP tube is thoroughly dry after washing, you contribute significantly to the effectiveness, hygiene, and longevity of your CPAP equipment, as well as your overall comfort and health during therapy.

    When I wash mine once per week in the morning, I hang over a door all day and if it still has drops of water, I turn on the mask fitting feature to blow out all the rest. Doesn’t take very long and works like a charm.

      If you have it on humidity while drying.. that could be it or your machine is messed up and needs reaccessed,
      there could be a of some type, leaks protection from electrocution and it should auto shut down unless you have an older type . . But yes once a week we have to clean them so I feel frustrated at that but it's worth it for sure I've came into another world with sleep for sure I still hav low energy but it helps us in more ways than we even know,
      it a lot to do especially when you have little ones,
      it hard to keep up with every little time and date when insurance gives this that and etc.but I had issues with mine shutting off during my sleep that was my problem and I couldn't figure out why it was odd but it was shutting down for protection but it messed up my sleep big time I could tell only after three months of using the machine I needed it even more than before, I was sleep deprived after going days with it running maybe 3 to 4 hours at most or not even at all turning on some days.. until it shut off for a week straight. They say it will do that at anytime during power issues which we had a huge snow I didn't know if signals or something maybe caused it but it never did before, which was super agitating especially when I finally got into my doc and he said I used it only one day which was BS THEY SENT MY RECORDS TO ANOTHER DOCTOR. NOW I GOT A MEMORY CARD

    Question. Why is it necessary to make sure your tube is perfectly dry after you clean it as its purpose is to carry moist air to you from the humidifier?

    • @thecpapstore
      @thecpapstore  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey! It's actually not super required. However, drying your tube is important for 2 reasons. 1. Some people have 2 tubes. They will wash one and use the other. However, if they just hang it up (especially if they live in a humid climate) it can take a week or more to fully dry. So its better to dry it with your machine after a few hours of hang drying, before storage, to prevent moisture and mold. 2. Not drying the tube, can cause discomfort and increase the chance of CPAP tube rainout, due to excess moisture.
      However, if you wash your tube, and let it hang dry and there is just a super tiny amount of water OR you use the method in the video and still see super tiny droplets, you can totally use it without waiting for every last drop. The most important thing with tube cleaning, is just ensuring you have all the soap rinsed out prior to drying.

    I did my first weekly cleaning Friday morning, hanging the tube to dry, but it was still wet inside Friday at 4pm, so I called my CPAP store and was told to let it keep hanging over the shower rod until there were no more than about 20 drops left.
    It's now 4pm Saturday and still coated with droplets inside.
    I'm concerned that drying it with the machine would send data that would void my contract and make me have to pay for the machine outside insurance (too many hundreds of dollars).
    The drops of water coating the inside of the tube are tap water.
    I'm concerned about possible mold or bacteria growth, and wondering if I should rewash it, and if so, with what, or do I now need a new tube.

    • @thecpapstore
      @thecpapstore  Месяц назад

      If your tube has not dried in a day, I would rewash it. But you don't need a new tube.
      Unless your insurance is really strict I can't see that being an issue. You can run a few mask fit tests. I don't believe your insurance can void your contract if you are running mask fit tests, which is part of the features in your machine.
      However, there is nothing your insurance can really do if you use the method in this video. For all they know, you took a nap with a mouth leak.
      Double check with them, as these are only my opinions. You can get a Hurricane CPAP dryer if it is still a concern.

    For your process..
    I am assuming that since there is no water in the chamber, the humidity is turned off , the tube temp is turned off, .do you have to have the machine on any setting such as mask fit to do this.. or just turn it on? The process should take only about five minutes, correct?..Thank you posting this, as we are still so new on journey .

      I don't use any specific setting, just run the CPAP machine (without a mask) and a dry tank, until the tube is dry. If you see drops after using during the night, you can be experiencing 'rainout', which is also normal.
      If you notice it gets harder to dry over time, there could be small layer of biofilm within the tube, which holds on to drops better. In such case, get a tube cleaner for when you wash your tube!
